The Woman and the Feathers
The s tory goes that a woman who lived in a village,
a notorious gossip who caused no end of distress ,
decided to amend her ways so she went to the
priest for confession. She told the pries t of her
problem and as ked for forgiveness and help. He
duly pronounced her forgiven by God. “But what
should I do?” she as ked. He replied, “Take a feather pillow, cut a hole
in one corner and walk around the village scattering the feathers as you
go then come and see me again.” That’s easy, she thought, and did as
the priest had s aid. “I’ve done as you told me. Is that it?”
“No,” s aid the priest, “now you must go back and collect up
all the feathers you have s cattered.” “But I can’t do that,”
she protes ted, “The wind has blown them everywhere and
I’ll never manage to get them all back again.” “Quite,” said
the wise old priest. “Now you know how goss ip works and how it
spreads , so when you’re tempted to goss ip again, think of the feathers .”
I suspect that we have all fallen victim of gossip at some time, and
perhaps we have even been tempted to spread goss ip ourselves. The
temptation can be very real, especially if we have been hurt or unfairly
treated. Most of us would be appalled at the thought of being in volved
in a violent act towards another person so why do we not feel the same
about goss ip? Goss ip is sayin g unpleasant or untrue things about
someone ‘behind their backs ’ and this can be very des tructive. Is this
something we want to be involved in or associated with?
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus warned his disciples against
exaggeration or distortion: “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
He also said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute
you.”
True, at times his teaching can be very difficult but he didn’t ever say
it would be eas y to be a disciple. That said, isn’t his way the sort of
lifestyle we would all want to experience if the choice was ours?
With his help it can be - beware of scattering feathers.
Chris tian greetings,

St Leonard’s Church Cleaning Rota
The people who visit Sherfield parish church would like to
say a big thank you to the ladies and gentlemen
who help to keep it clean and tidy. The church is
open twice a month on a Saturday as well as the
normal service times and all who enter are
appreciative of the way it is kept, looking its
best.
Sadly, we have to say goodbye to one of our ‘faithfuls’ this
year so we are asking if there is anyone who is nimble enough
with the duster and w ho would be willing to help us. We work
in tw os and threes and our turn comes round about four
times a year.
Rody is having a planning meeting at 7.30pm
on Monday 14th May at The Rectory, 33
Northfield Road to sort out the Cleaning Rota
for the next year. Please come and join us for
food and drink and bring your diary. If you know of anyone
who would be able to help, please bring them along to the
meeting as well.

Editorial by Brian Archer
It’s that time of year when activities and
events take pride of place in the life of our
villages and communities. I particularly draw
your attention to the report of the Benefice
Strategic Planning Group (page 20) - a very posh name, but
with admirable objectives, namely to encourage people to come
to events w hich enable committed believers to mix with
others who may be curious or enquiring about the Christian
Faith. They are trying to do this through special services and
events - and you will see a good selection of these in this
month’s magazine.
Percy’s Plant Sale (page 18) is as much a social event as a plant
buying opportunity. Come along on Saturday 19th May to meet
up with others and indulge your passion for plants. And, by the
way, you will help raise money for two worthy causes.
Summertime means ‘S ummer Fetes’ and in Sherfield they are
gearing up for a very special Fete this year. All the usual fun
items will be there - the dog show and the many stalls and side
show s, but a special attraction will be a parachute display by
the ‘Red Devils’ freefall parachute team. They are able to
jump from 10,000 feet and make a pinpoint landing on a
postage stamp! It will be stupendous so book the date…..
Saturday 16th June and be there to be close to all the action.
Watch out for full details in the next Loddon Link.
Finally, see page 26 for details of the Sherfield Parish Council
Annual Parish Meeting and on page 36 the AGM of the Hartley
Wespall Parish Council… in both cases a chance for you to find
out more about present and future plans.

Are all Good Cooks Female?
Am I w rong – but whenever I turn on the TV and watch the
umpteen cookery programmes – they all seem to be presented
by male chefs!? If that is the case, then w here
are all the male bakers in our midst? At the
Sherfield Show there is a trophy entitled
that is awarded to the man who bakes
the best cake! I may try my hand at this – is
there any competition out there? See the green
entry booklet for entry details. Oh, by the way,
the Sherfield Show is on Saturday 8th September. Make a
note in your diary.

NWR met recently and discussed a book whic h we had all read.
It was ‘The Africa House’ by Christina Lamb. This is a
remarkable true story about Stewart Gore-Browne who, against
amazing o dds, built a stately ho me in the English tradition in the
heart of the African bush in what was Northern Rhodesia, now
Zambia, in the 1920s. Bricks for the house w ere made on site,
but all the contents had to be transported over roug h terrain
for thousan ds of miles. He employ ed local people, not only to
build the ho use, but also to work as servants and estate
workers after it was built.
Stewart Gore-Browne is unusual in that he cha mpions the cause
of the native people and really believes that eventually they
can run their own econo my successfully – when the time is right.
He believed in equality, unusual in those days, although he
often treated his employees harshly an d believed that strong
discipline was necessary. The estate nev er made much money ,
but he was supported by a wealthy aunt who oft en baled hi m
out. Eventually his daughter and her hus band inherited the
house and estate, but sadly were murdered by terrorists from
South Africa. Later his grandson restored the house (w hich
had fallen into a state of dereliction) and it is now run as an
up-market holiday destination.
Most of us really enjoyed the boo k and we ha d a lively
discussion. May is going to be busy for us. We have a talk on
Massage, a ramble an d a visit to West Green Garden near
Hartley Wintney.
