LEARN ABOUT CORN AND CORN
PRODUCTS AT THE 2010 AG EXPO
LANSING, MICH. – Where can you find
the newest corn-based products, corn-
powered vehicles and a corn-powered
superhero named Captain Cornelius all
in one place? At the 2010 Ag Expo! Be
sure to stop by Tent A at this year’s event
and visit the Corn Marketing Program
of Michigan (CMPM) and the Michigan
Corn Growers Association (MCGA)
booth for lots of great information and
giveaways relating to Michigan’s most
bountiful crop–corn.
The 31st annual Ag Expo, held July
20-22 on the campus of Michigan State
University (MSU), is Michigan’s largest
outdoor farm show. The show will be
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 20
and 21 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July
22. Visitors can view demonstrations
and exhibits on equipment, products
and services of interest to farmers and
agribusinesses.
“Agriculture is Michigan’s second largest
industry and corn is the largest crop
grown in our state. The industry is always
changing and we are constantly working
to develop new uses and markets for
corn,” said Jody Pollok-Newsom, CMPM
and MCGA executive director. “That
is why the CMPM and MCGA display
combines the latest information on
ethanol, corn-based plastics and fabrics,
corn heating units, corn-related research,
as well as facts and information to bust
the myths on ethanol and corn. We strive
to show our growers and other Ag Expo
attendees where the Michigan corn
industry is today and where it is headed
in the future.”
As one of the many exciting uses for
corn, ethanol will be a large focus of the
CMPM and MCGA booth. To showcase
ethanol use, a flex-fuel vehicle (FFV)
and an ethanol-powered snowmobile,
courtesy of Kettering University, will
be onsite for the public to view. A FFV
can run on ordinary gasoline, gasoline
blended with up to 85 percent ethanol
and all combinations in between.
In addition to information on ethanol,
products made from corn-based plastics
will also be on display at the booth. The
higher price of petroleum-based products
has helped to increase the market for
more environmentally-friendly, corn-
based plastics. Companies are now
looking to utilize corn-based plastics
to not only be environmentally-friendly,
but also to make economical business
decisions. They are finding new and
improved ways to make plastic from
corn polymers which biodegrade in a
fraction of the time their petroleum-based
counterparts need.
Also featured at the corn booth will
be everyone’s favorite corn-powered
superhero, Captain Cornelius. Captain
Cornelius will be available each day
to meet children. There will also be
balloons, popcorn and Captain Cornelius
tattoos for children, so be sure to visit the
CMPM and MCGA booth to learn more
about corn.
Headquartered in Lansing, the CMPM
is a legislatively-established statewide
program that utilizes one-cent per bushel
of Michigan corn sold. Investments
are made in the areas of research,
education, market development, and
new uses in an effort to enhance the
economic position of Michigan corn
farmers. The CMPM works cooperatively
with the Michigan Corn Growers
Association (MCGA), a grassroots-
membership association representing
the state’s corn grower’s political
interests since the 1970’s. Michigan’s
corn industry adds more than one billion
dollars to the state’s economy annually
and in 2009, Michigan’s corn farmers
harvested a record setting crop of more
than 309 million bushels. For more

BOOMERS REFUSE TO TAKE OLD

FLEAS AND TICKS POSE PROBLEMS
FOR PETS
(NewsUSA) - It happens every summer
-- your dog spends a lot of time outdoors,
whether he is playing, hiking or camping,
only to end up with swollen ticks on his
ears or belly hours later. But parasites,
such as fleas and ticks, are not just a
summer menace. They can infect pets at
any time.
Banfield Applied Research and
Knowledge (BARK), Banfield Pet
Hospital’s (www.banfield.net) internal
research team, recently reviewed more
than 2.2 million health records obtained
from dog and cat visits in 2009. Fleas
are the most common parasite in kittens
under six months, middle-aged dogs and
senior dogs and cats. Their research
also shows that May is the peak season
for ticks, and October is the peak season
for fleas, making parasites an ongoing
concern for pet owners.
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme
disease, which is carried by ticks, is
the most commonly reported vector-
transmitted disease. And research
suggests that dogs are twice as likely to
develop Lyme disease as humans living
in the same area.
Parasites are more than annoyances
-- they spread disease, not only to your
pets, but to other members of your family
as well. Fleas and ticks “are responsible
for potentially severe allergic reactions,
tapeworm infections and can cause
severe anemia and death in young, sick
or debilitated pets,” explained Jeffrey
Klausner, DVM, MS, DACVIM, senior
vice president and chief medical officer
for Banfield.
Preventing fleas and ticks is a critical
part of a pet’s health care, but pet
owners should speak to their veterinarian
before attempting treatments.
“Flea and tick preventive care products,
like powders, sprays and spot-on
treatments, offer varying degrees of
efficacy and safety. Additionally, the huge
number of products available can make
selecting the proper preventive care
product overwhelming to Pet owners,”
said Karen Johnson, DVM, vice president
and client advocate for Banfield.
Getting flea and tick products directly
from your veterinarian helps ensure
pet safety, as veterinarians instruct pet
owners in proper dosage and application.
Pet owners should also ask veterinarians
about flea and tick products approved
by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, such as FirstShield.

EARPLUGS
(NewsUSA) - Many couples accept
snoring as an inevitable part of nightly
life. But snoring warrants more than
shrugging your shoulders and buying
ear plugs -- snoring may indicate serious
health problems.
Snoring happens when the soft tissues
in the back of your throat relax, so they
vibrate as you breathe. If those tissues
get too relaxed, they can actually block
your airway, cutting off your breathing.
This condition, called “obstructive sleep
apnea,” prevents quality sleep. The
brain, not wanting to starve from lack of
oxygen, wakes patients when they stop
breathing, sometimes hundreds of times
per night. According to the American
Board of Internal Medicine, 50 to 60
percent of those who snore have sleep
apnea.
Most patients are unaware of the
problem, because they don’t remember
waking up throughout the night. For
this reason, it’s important to speak to a
doctor if you experience loud snoring,
excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty
concentrating, sore throat or high blood
pressure.
Risk factors for sleep apnea include
being male, being overweight, drinking
alcohol and having a large neck or a
history of nasal problems. The American
Sleep Apnea Association provides a quiz

“I’d give additional value for that. If you’re under two years remaining life (on
the paint job), paint the exterior because it tends to show wear badly.”
Just make sure you stay within the range of accepted colors for your market. A
house that’s painted a wildly different color from its competition will be marked
down in value by appraisers.
2. Have the house washed. Before you make the investment in a paint job,
though, take a good look at the house. If it’s got mildew or general grunge,
just washing the house could make a world of difference, says Valerie Torelli,
a California real estate agent with a background in accounting.

on her clients’ homes, a service she pays for herself to get higher selling
prices. Overall, she says her goal is to spend less than $5,000, with a goal of
generating an extra $10,000 to $15,000 on the sale price.

mailboxes,” she says. “A nice one runs you $40 to $50.” Architectural house
numbers may run as high as a few hundred dollars.
6. Repair or clean the roof. Springfield, Va.-based home inspector and
former builder Reggie Marston says the roof is one of the first things he looks
at in assessing the condition of a home. He’ll look at other houses in the
neighborhood to see if there are a lot of replaced roofs and see if the subject

possible contaminants, from Arsenic to Xylenes.

violations of the Maximum Contaminant Levels

What is Big Rapids doing to protect
our groundwater supply?
Big Rapids has initiated a Wellhead Protection
Program to study the quality of our groundwater and
the steps we as a community can take to protect it.
In addition, the Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality recently performed a
Source Water Assessment (SWA) of the Big Rapids
water system; our source water susceptibility to
contamination was determined to be “moderate.”
