Samoan Culture

Languages
• In American Samoa, most people are bilingual they
speak both Samoan and English. In samoa most
people speak Samoan although they inhabitants of
island speak Tokelauan.
What clothes they wear?
• The traditional ladies
clothing is the puletasi
which is a matching
skirt and tunic with
samoan designs. The
lava lava is a sarong
which may be worn by
men or woman they are
different patterns and
colors.
Sports
• Rugby union is very
popular in samoa.
Samoa have competed
at every rugby world
cup since 1991.samoan
also play in the pacific
nations cup.
Dances
• Boys performing a
samoa fire dance. The
traditional samoan
dance is the siva. The
female siva with gentle
movement of the hands
and feet in time to
music. Males perform
the fa’ataupati (slap
dance).
Samoan house
• The house are constructed
using western materials and
designs but still each village
indeed usually each
extended. traditionally has a
fale talimalo, (guest house)
or a fale fono ,(meeting
house) where the chiefs
convene.
Cuisine
• Sunday are traditionally a
day of rest and many
families congregate to share
an umu together for a
Sunday afternoon meal. In a
traditional household the
older member of the family
will sit and eat first and as
the meal continues the
younger members of then
children are invited to eat.
Samoan tattoos
• Tattoos or demonstrate the
strong ties many Samoans feel for
their culture. They have practiced
the art of tattooing both men and
women for over 2,000 years a
man tattoos extensively covers
from mid back, down the sides
and flanks to the knees. A
women's tattoos is not quite as
extensive or heavy.
What age for tattoos and why?
• Samoan’s cultural past
most males were
tattooed between the
ages of 14-18, when it
was determined they
had stopped growing so
the designs would not
stretch and suffer in
beauty.
