In India measurement of the
concentration of gaseous pollutants in
ambientair has depended upon wetchemical
sampling techniques since the enforcement
of the Air Pollution Control Act commenced
in 1981 -82. Use of automatic direct reading
instruments in India and other developing
countries is out of the question for the near
future due to their high cost, need of
sophisticated facilities such as calibration
systems and air-conditioned housing besides
a host of problems of operation and
maintenance. In contrast, instruments using
wet chemical niethods with appropriate
bubblers for sample collection are simple,
inexpensive and reliable and with ample
educated manpower available for laboratory
analyses, offer the only practical alternative
for developing countries in the foreseable
future.
Applications: Monitoring concentrations of gaseous
pollutants in ambient air or in stack emissions. Can
replace continuous monitors for S0 2 , NH3, H2S and CS2

However, the commonly available
samplers (whether specific Low Volume
Samplers or more commonly attachments
to High Volume Air Samplers) used in such
monitoringsufferfromanimportantlimitation.
The s a m p l e o b t a i n e d t h r o u g h t h e s e
instruments provides only the long term
average concentrations as a single value to
represent the entire 8 / 24 hour sampling
period. Sampling over shorter periods to
monitorvariations inpollutantconcentrations
with time would require frequent change of
bubbler trains and resetting of the sampler
which is rarely practicable.
Realizing the limitation of the traditional
Samplers, Envirotech jointly with NEERI
has developed the "Sequential Air Sampler",
Envirotech APM 500, which retains the

advantages of the wet chemical methods,
yet provides samples which can estimate
both short-term peak concentrations and
long term average levels.
The APM 500 system uses a
sophisticated microprocessor based
controller to automatically change the
impingers used to absorb gaseous pollutants
at pre-programmed time intervals, The
controller also maintains a record, accurate
t'j the nearest minute, of the actual duration
eachsamplewascollected in. TheSequential
Sampler therefore makes it possible to obtain
a set of short-term samples with minimum
operator effort.

the d e c a d e long field e x p e r i e n c e of
Envirotech as a leading manufacturer of

ensure that only inert materials come in
contact with the gases prior to absorption,
and, the system has been partitioned into
functional modules for ease of transportation

• Stable Flow Control
The sampling rate of each sample is
controlled by an in-built flow control-
orifice to guarantee a fixed sampling
rate over time. The system design
minimizes the number of joints between
the flow control system and the impinger
train to minimise chances of any
leakages.
• Inert gas handling materials
The sampling hose is made of Teflon
and Silicone rubber tubes have been
used to couple the impingers.

System Controller Based on Z-80 CPU with built-in real time clock and printer driver.

Valve Assembly Bank of ten solenoid operated valves with in-built flow control orifices

Sampling Trains Eight trains of 2 Nos. 35 ml. midget impingers placed in an Ice Box. Two such boxes provided with
each system to facilitate quick change-over.

Sampling Ice Boxes 2 Nos. light and sturdy fiberglass boxes with adequate insulation and water draining tap, locking
arrangement and handle for ease of carrying.

Sampling Time Totally flexible, (with a practical range of 15-500 minutes for each sample) can be programmed in
the controller. Operation of more than one train simultaneously (in parallel) possible.

Sampling Time Record Maintained to the nearest minute, the system also keeps track of power failures.

Suction Pump Oil free diaphram type, continuous duty rated for operation over long periods, capable of giving
flows up to 5 LPM at adequate suction pressures.

Extension Hoses and Cables A 20 metre long vacuum hose and valve control cable is provided so that the microprocessor
controller can be located safely indoors, away from the sampling location.
Power Requirement 220 Volts single phase AC mains fed through a CVT. Total system load 150VA.

Sampling probe 1 m long SS Probe pipe with braided Teflon hose pipe fitted with suitable couplers.
