scientific processes to answer questions.

Dynamic Earth: Earth’s landforms are the result of
interactions between matter and energy. A system of Earth and
Sun produces useful resources. Earth is a changing system.
Fourth Grading Period
Organisms and Environments: Characteristics of environments
support populations within ecosystems. Environments depend on
relationships, systems, and cycles. Energy and resources
cycle and flow through ecosystems. Organisms sustain their
species.

My Behavior
Management Plan
Students are expected to follow the rules
and make good choices on their own. We
have, and will continue to, discuss rules
and expectations extensively and for
nearly every activity.

Students that consistently exhibit

difficulty in following the rules may be
placed on a behavior chart or other plan.
Most second graders are able to follow the
rules that I set up. Those that are not
may need some behavioral intervention.
Rewards & Incentives
*Marble Jar (to earn a party of
their choosing)
*Verbal reinforcement & praise
*Extra Privileges (free time,
early recess, etc.)
*Email or note home about
positive behaviors
Consequences
*Verbal reprimand
*Rearrangement of seating
*Loss of privileges (can’t
take off shoes, etc.)
*Cool down at Recess
*Email/note/phone call home
*Referral to Principal’s
Office
My Homework Policy
Research does not support traditional homework at the
second grade level. So, my homework policy focuses
on:

*Monthly Family Projects (usually with a Social

Studies focus)
*Nightly Reading Log

Due to a mandate from the Zilker Administration, I

have added a weekly math activity, too. I have tried
to make this as painless as possible by allowing
students a choice between a game online or a physical
game. If you have another suggestion that you think
will benefit your child, please feel free to ask
about it. I am flexible, especially if it is a
research-based activity.
My Homework Policy
continued…
Here is what I want your child to do weekly:
*Make 4 entries on the reading log (you can write for them
if they struggle)
*Play an online math game or the physical game
*Talk with you about one of the Science/Social Studies
topics

I ask that you return the homework binder weekly so that I

can check
the reading log and “restock” with the next assignment.

Here’s what I want at the end of the month:

*Completed Family Project.

The homework assignments that are most important to me will

require some product (reading log, family project). I get
very offended when students do not do this homework, as I
consider it to be both valuable and “light”.
School-Home
Communication
I will communicate with you in these ways:

*Email
*Blog
*Homework Folder
*Thursday Folder
*Phone call (rarely)
*In person (with appointment or after school)

The BEST way to reach me is via email at

kdailey@austinisd.org. Answering the phone during
the day can be difficult for me, since I have to
stop teaching to answer. However, please call if
you need me to know something after 1:30 p.m.,
since I do not usually check my email after 1:30.
Attendance
• Your child will be marked “Tardy” if he or she walks in the
classroom door after the 7:45 bell.
• Your child will be marked “Absent” if he or she has not arrived
by 10:00 a.m.
• If you arrive after 9:00, please go to the office and get a
note from the secretary.
• If your child is absent, please send an excuse note when they
return. We must have the excuse note within 3 days of the
absence to excuse it. Unfortunately, email is not accepted as
an excuse note.

• Absences and tardies are problematic for two main reasons: (1)
the student can miss important information & lessons that are
difficult to make-up and (2) I have to do extra paperwork,
which takes away from my planning and teaching

*I understand that children get sick, family emergencies arise,

and alarm clocks don’t go off. However, students that are tardy
or absent regularly really do miss out on activities, lessons,
and discussions that cannot be made up at home. Please make
every effort to be at school on-time each day.
Early Arrival
If you and your child arrive before the 7:35 bell, please come
to the cafeteria instead of staying on the portable deck.

If you arrive after the 7:35 bell but before we have arrived
at the portable, please help your child find us and join us
in the line. I always give instructions before entering the
classroom, and it takes up valuable time trying to pry your
children from the deck to join us in the line. We always
take the same route from the cafeteria, so we are easy to
find.

I will keep my portable door locked until I have arrived from

the cafeteria, so if it is cold or raining, I apologize.
The easiest option is to just go ahead and meet us in the
cafeteria before 7:35.

Having students in the classroom before I arrive is a

liability issue for the school, even if parents are
monitoring their children.
Now that you know about
my expectations, what
are your questions and
concerns?
