INFORMATION, EDUCATION COMMUNICATION (IEC)

MATERIALS AND JOB AIDS PROPER USE

What is the IEC material
1

IEC materials are the tools used to transfer the


knowledge to target audience to assist promoting
positive behaviors.

Type of IEC materials
1

 Graphics and audio-visuals — which would include


brochure, poster, display board, billboard,
videotape, slide, flip chart, flip card /counseling card.
 
 Mass media — which would include radio,
television, movie, newspaper, and magazine.

Categories of IEC materials

 Printable: Poster, brochure, flip chart, flip


card/counseling card, bill board, newspaper,
magazine etc.
 
 Electronic: Radio spot, television spot, movie etc.

The following IEC materials are currently available
in the heath facilities & communities:
1

 Posters: They are laminated papers of 38X50 or


56x65 cm containing illustrations and messages. It
aims to improve the awareness and knowledge of
population and help them adopt the suggested
behaviors by reminding the key messages.

 Flip charts (Attached cloth sheets): Flipcharts are


attached 36X50 cm sheets of cloth containing
illustrations and texts. The material is designed in a
manner that when heath educator or a CHWs show
the illustration to the audience, they themselves can
see the text related to that specific illustration.

 Flip cards (Attached cards): Flip cards are


laminated hard paper of 22.5X28.5 cm, attached by
metallic rings. Flip cards contain illustrations and
related messages in the same order as flipcharts.

Important points in using the IEC materials in the
community and HFs
1

 Posters should be displayed in community/most crowded public


places (markets, mosques, clinics, hospitals, schools, governmental
institutions) ensuring easy readability and visibility. They should not
be pasted too high or too low.

 In HFs, the posters should be displayed for the clients in the waiting
rooms corridors the way they are easily visible and readable for them.

 Make sure that poster are strongly pasted on the wall.

 Make sure that posters are not pasted at sites exposed to rain and
snow.

 Make sure that the related sections of the HF such


as doctors, midwives and vaccinators, have the
related counseling materials (flip cards).

 Make sure that the counseling materials are


regularly used by its related section at the health
facility

 Make sure that the flip cards (counseling card)


distributed to HPs are regularly used by CHWs for

 Make sure that the flipcharts are used by health


educator during the health education sessions and
by CHWs in the community gatherings such as
community Shura etc
 All the materials should be used properly to prevent
them from misuse and damage
 The materials should always be available and visible
at the facilities. If the distributed materials are
damaged or out of use, another copy should be
distributed from the stock of the health facility.

What is Job Aid
1

Materials used by a service provider to facilitate the


performance of a job or task.
 
 The Job aid are especially intended for certain
health facility staff; they should not be distributed
to CHS or CHWs
 
 The job aids should always be displayed for the
health provider and visible in all the time in the
related section.
