-(AmmoLand.com)-Astheoldprospectorandhis   friendwouldquicklydiscover,awoundedbullmoosecanbeaswiftand   deadlykill  er.  ThroughoutthewesternUnitedStatesinthe1850s,miningcampswere   springingupeverywhereasthousandsofmenfromasfarawayasChina   andEnglandcameinsearchoffortunes.  Manyofthetentedminingcampswereinwildernessareaswherethe   menhadtohuntwildgametosurvive.Thehugeinfluxofpeoplehadto    befedandthoughfewwerefamiliarwithguns,theylearnedtohuntout  ofnecessity.  Itwasimportanttogetagoodsupplyofvenisonforthecampsto   supplementtheirprovisionsandsustainthemovertheharshwinter   months.Moose,blacktailandmuledeerwerethefavoritechoice,butin   desperationthehunterswouldbagwhatevertheycouldfind.  IntheCoeurdAleneMountainsofIdaho,aprospectorbythenameof   PingreejoinedupwithanoldhuntercalledPurvistogetsomemeatfor   thetable.BothmenwereoriginallyfromNewHampshire,wherethey   hadlearnedhowtoski.   Aheavysnowblanketedthemountainsonthatlate-Novemberdaywhen   themenheadedoutonskistohuntblacktails.Followingtracksnotfar   fromcamp,theysoonfoundthemselvesonthebanksofalake.Pingree   sawadarkshapemovinginanearbythicketandthroughthesnow-  encrustedbrush,hecouldjustmakeouttheformofabullmoose.  Duringtherut,moosecanbequiteaggressiveandunpredictable,which   themenwerewellawareof.Cautiouslytheypositionedthemselvesfora   shot.PurviscouldntgetaclearlineofsightsohemotionedtoPingreeto   taketheshot.Withoutshiftinghisposition,Pingreeraisedhisrifleand   fired.  Theshotonlywoundedthemoose,whichimmediatelylowereditshead   andchargedPingree.Theprospectordesperatelytriedtomaneuver   aroundonhisskis,butitwastoolateandtheanimalwasuponhim.  Pingreewasknockedbackwardsintothesnowandashestruggledtoget  up,themoosepoundedhimwithhispowerfulfrontlegs.  Theprospector’sdesperatecriesechoedacrossthesilentsnowscape.  Purvisskiedasfastashecouldaroundthethicketandshotthemonster   asitcontinuedtostomponhisfriend.Theonlyeffectofthebulletwasto   redirectthebullsattentiononPurvis.Theanimalchargedthe   prospector,movingeffortlesslythroughthesnow.Purvismanagedto   grabatreebranch,hopingtoswingoutofharmsway.   Asthebeasthurtledpast,itraiseditshugeantlersinanefforttogore   Purvis,butmissed.Themoosecontinuedhigh-steppingthroughthe   snowandwasneverseenagain.  Theoldhunterwenttotheprospector’said,butfoundhimbadly    wounded,hischestcrushedundertherelentlessonslaughtofthe   animalsheavyhooves.  PurvisdidwhathecouldtosavePingree,butthepoormandiedwithina   fewhours.Theentireincident,whichhadlastedonlyafewseconds,
