Sec 3 – 4: Prime Factorization

Objectives:
1) To find multiples and factors.

2) To use prime factorization.

Vocabulary -
Multiple – A multiple of a number is the product of that number and any nonzero whole
number.

Least Common Multiple (LCM) – The LCM of two or more numbers is the least multiple
that is common to all of the numbers.

Factor – a whole number that divides another whole number with a remainder of 0.

Composite Number – a whole number greater than one that has more than two factors.

Prime Number – a whole number with exactly two factors, 1 and the number itself. The
number 1 is neither prime nor composite.

Prime Factorization – Writing a composite number as the product of its prime factors.

Greatest Common Factor (GCF) – The GCF of two or more numbers is the greatest
number that is a factor of all the numbers.
Ex 1) Finding LCM

Business Computers are delivered to a

store every 6 days. Printers are delivered
every 9 days. If both computers and printers
are delivered today, when will both be
delivered again?
Check Understanding: Example 1
Find the LCM of each pair of numbers.

a) 4, 10

b) 5, 7

c) 12, 15

d) Reasoning Zero is not considered a multiple of

any other number besides itself. Why does this
make sense?
Ex 2) Finding Factors

Find the factors of 30.

Check Understanding: Example 2

a) Find the factors of 42

b) Number Sense What numbers are

always factors of even numbers?
Ex 3) Prime Numbers and Composite Numbers

Tell whether each number is prime or

composite.

a) 12

b) 13
Check Understanding: Example 3
Tell whether each number is prime or composite.

a) 14

b) 15

c) 11

d) 2

e) Reasoning What is the only even prime number?

Ex 4) Writing Prime Factorization

Use a factor tree to write the prime

factorization of 60.
Check Understanding: Example 4

Write the prime factorization of 72. Use

exponents when possible.
Ex 5) Finding the GCF
