H
e’s back … again … and this year he has brought even
more of his clients, friends and fellow business owners
to smash last year’s goal of raising $22,000. This year’s
goal is $30,000!
Mike Gorski, Owner of Island Transportation, launched
this project three years ago to help raise additional funds at the
Bohicket Backpack Buddies Chili Cook-off. Each year so far
has proven to be more successful in raising funds for this great
cause. Gorski is back with even more friends for this year’s Chili
Cook-off on Saturday, March 16, from 1-4 p.m. at the Bohicket
Marina.
The Chili Cook-off benefits Backpack Buddies Seabrook
Island and the Backpack Buddies Group of the Kiawah Women’s
Foundation. The two organizations are both 501(c)(3) nonprofits
whose missions are to feed local, hungry, school children on
the weekends and during school holidays. These children are

provided breakfast and lunch by the schools, but often are being
left to fend for themselves on the weekends. Backpack Buddies
on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands are currently feeding close to
400 local children each week.
To help raise additional funds on this day for these two great
organizations, Gorski has received commitments from 15 local
businesses to donate $1,000 each to collectively secure $15,000 of
funds that will be used to match the donations made by residents
of both Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.
This year, the following companies have generously
committed to provide the $15,000 in matching funds: Island
Transportation Services, CFS Promotional Products, Coastal
Getaway of SC, Emery Macpherson Akers Ellis Real Estate,
Fipps and Sons Auto Center, Holy City Construction, Kiawah

he College of Charleston Arts
Management Program is excited
to announce that world renowned
drummer, percussionist, and two-time
Grammy nominee Quentin Baxter
has joined its faculty and will serve as
the new host of the In The Mix speaker
series, replacing Artist in Residence
Emeritus Mark Bryan who has returned
to recording and touring with Hootie
and the Blowfish. The first installment
of In The Mix was held on Feb. 4 in the
Recital Hall of the Simons Center for the
Arts. The event, “Epic Women: Industry
Journeys of Two Executives at Epic
Records,” featured a live video conference
with Traci Adams and Leah Bekele of
Epic Records discussing their career paths
and their experiences as women in the
music industry.
Quentin Baxter has taught at the
College of Charleston as an adjunct
professor of jazz percussion since 1997.
In his expanded role with the Arts
Management Program, he will be able
to share the full breadth of his music
industry knowledge and experience with
a greater student population as well as the
Charleston community as a whole. Baxter
is the CEO of his own music production
company, Baxter Music Enterprises,
LLC, as well as an active performing,
and recording artist. He currently tours

Councilmember John Gregg said the
Club’s Long Range Planning Committee
did not meet last month as predicted,
and added that no meeting is currently
scheduled. His comment cast some doubt
about the board meeting anticipated for
February, at which time Councilmember
Finke is to be transitioned into place as
SITC’s liaison to the group.
Gregg said the Public Safety
Committee met Jan. 14. The group has
called into question recent efforts to line
up volunteers willing and qualified to
help (e.g. medical backgrounds, backhoe
familiarity, experience in a commercial
kitchen, etc.) in an emergency. Events
like earthquakes are nearly impossible
to anticipate and could leave the island
isolated and without any staff available to
assist if bridges are out, staff is at home,
etc. The question of liability was raised
regaring the use of volunteers instead of
staff during the last meeting. The Town
is seeking legal advice on how/if they can
proceed in building the desired list, said
Gregg.
He then augmented previous reports
of meetings with representatives of
the Federal Emergency Management
Agency. The most recent iteration saw
the federal branch of FEMA reach some
closure on expenses incurred as a result
of Hurricane Florence. Seabrook applied
for over $28,000 in relief, of which the
federal component of FEMA agreed to
reimburse about $21,000. The amount
does not reflect the possibility of further
reimbursement from the SC Emergency
Management Division (the state level
element of FEMA), which could increase
Seabrook’s total refund.
Gregg concluded his remarks with
the comment that the SC Department
of Health and Environmental Control
visited the island on Jan. 9. The purpose of
DHEC’s visit was inspecting the Town’s
storm debris reduction/storage sites. He
noted the accumulated debris behind the
Andell Inn would have to be removed
before it could be certified by the state
agency.
Councilmember Wells said work on
the last three valves along Seabrook Island
Rd. is underway, and could be completed
by the end of the month. He also reported
there would be a box placed near Captain
Sams inlet in anticipation of this year's
dolphin education program, stocked with
chairs, umbrellas, and etc. The “supplies”
will be stored there to make volunteering
for the program easier this year than last
(e.g. walking 1.5 miles in the rain to fetch
an umbrella will no longer be necessary,
for example). He also said last year’s four
hour shifts would be replaced by two hour
shifts. Although he didn’t say so, moves to
lighten the load suggests it’s time to think
about volunteering for 2019.
Councilmember Finke reminded
Council the idea of Seabrook instituting
a ban on single use plastics was broached
during the Ways and Means Committee
meeting earlier in January. Consequently,
she advised SITC her planned article on
the topic of offshore drilling would be
replaced by one on the topic of plastics.
The move could leave Kiawah as the sole
remaining coastal community without an
ordinance banning single use plastics, just
as the state legislature reintroduces a bill
prohibiting local bans.
Mayor Ciancio opened his remarks
by announcing the formation of a
new committee. The Mayor, the town
administrator, and Councilmembers
Gregg and Finke will work to improve
SITC’s efficiency, said Ciancio. He was
quick to point out the idea was to find ways
to improve the way Council functions and
not to correct any abstract deficiency. He
hopes to have a draft proposal together in
May.
Perhaps buoyed by the prospect of
completing I-526, the Mayor reported a
long discussion with county officials on
additional plans to improve Johns Island
roads. Ciancio reported one possibility
included widening Main/Bohicket Rd.
starting at Bees Ferry, in three stages; to
River Rd., to Maybank, and the third
stage link to Betsy Kerrison. Alternatively,
the “Cross Island Parkway” is also back on
the table, he said.
Town Administrator Joe Cronin had a
lengthy report starting with a follow up to
previous discussions of a master plan for

Seabrook Island Rd. Council approved a
$33,500 contract with ESP Associates
to study the route for possible/general
improvements, and another $48,000+
for permitting and engineering work to
improve drainage beyond existing repairs,
which are nearly completed.
Council then approved;
• Extensions to a pair of active
building permits; 2708 Jenkins
Point Rd. will have an extra 90
days, and 3143 Marsh Gate Ln.
will have an extra 6 months.
• A temporary use permit allowing
the club to use temporary office
space. However, since the club
went for forgiveness instead of
permission before making the
move, the permit may have to be
renewed.
• Charleston County’s access
to the island to inspect homes
with repeated flood loss claims.
Cooperation could help improve
Seabrook’s flood insurance rates.
• Declaring the Town’s 2008 Jeep
Wrangler as surplus property for
disposal or sale. If he was trying to

sell it, Cronin didn’t paint a pretty
picture. He said $850 was required
to get the vehicle to the point
where an assessment could done
on the cost of repairing multiple,
remaining issues. However, the
Town will be opening up a bid
process soon.
Ordinance 2018-15 was on the agenda
for its second reading/ratification.
Seabrook often exercised what had long
been considered the option of changing
dates when council meetings fell in the
same week as a holiday. The measure
changes “holiday” to “national holiday,”
and “shall” to “can.” The ordinance passed
unanimously.
Asked for an update on encroachment
permits along Seabrook Island Rd., the
Mayor said the required mediation would
yield a decision by Jan. 24. If all parties
agree with the resulting compromise, the
measure will come back to Council for a
vote. Otherwise, the matter will be the
subject of litigation.
There being no further business, the
meeting was adjourned. The next meeting
of the Seabrook Island Town Council will
be Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 2:30 p.m.

an annual car show on Kiawah

In 2018, Cars on Kiawah attracted
250 great cars and more than 3,500
spectators. The event is held at Ocean
Park, a beautiful expanse at the eastern
end of Kiawah Island adjacent to the
famed Ocean Course, home to the 2012
and 2021 PGA Championship.

Cars on Kiawah is an annual
celebration of the automobile from the
early 1900’s to modern supercars. The
2019 show will again feature 250 of the
region’s most outstanding classic and
collectible automobiles. Highlights of the

- The Rolls Royce Owners Club of the
Southeast will be featured as the 2019
Spotlight Club. We expect twenty-five
spectacular Rolls Royces and Bentleys on
display covering several decades of these
remarkable cars.
- Our featured collector is Gordon
King, a well-known local enthusiast and
collector who will display several cars from
his collection. Over a period of thirty-five
years, Gordon has owned more than 160
classics. King’s current collection includes
25 cars and over 30 motorcycles. He has
been a race car driver since the 1960’s and,
over the last twenty years has participated
in numerous vintage race car events.
- Automotive historian, Harvey Geiger,
will serve as our Honorary Chairman.
Geiger has published nearly 200 articles
and is nationally recognized as an
authority on automotive history and car
culture. He was awarded the prestigious
Lee Iacocca Award in 2013 in recognition
of his contributions to American
automotive heritage.
- Consistent with our interest in
attracting families, the show will include
a special display for children. Among the
many cars in this display will be a 1940
Firetruck, Bob Luczun’s amazing 1928
Ford Model A pickup truck with hundreds
of hand painted cartoon characters on it,
a “junker” that the children will be able
to paint pictures on and many other cars
with appeal to children and adults alike.
- Local television personality and host
of “Lowcountry Live,” Tom Crawford will
be our Master of Ceremonies.

award-winning vocalist and composer
René Marie, Grammy-nominated vocalist
Freddy Cole, and Ranky Tanky – the
jazz-infused Gullah music ensemble,
which he co-founded in 2017. Baxter
received the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner
Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2017,
South Carolina’s highest award given in
the arts.
Since 2014, In The Mix has explored
timely and engaging topics impacting the
musical landscape on both a local and
national level, all while exposing audience
members to industry insiders with real
world experience and insight. Recent
sessions have examined songwriting

compensation, the music streaming
business model, and the emergent
Charleston music scene, while former
guest speakers include Darius Rucker,
Cary Ann Hearst, and Jeff McClusky. A

Shared Future Project
addresses inequality

W
hat might our education system
and our community look like in
2035? For the past four months,
a 30-member team from across Charleston
County came together as part of the
Shared Future project to co-create a set of
four scenarios to answer that question.
This diverse group bridges race, sectors,
geography, politics, age, and roles. This
Charleston Shared Future team took into
account previous studies, like the Clemson
Study on Diversity and Inclusion, Post
and Courier’s “Minimally Adequate”
series, The Avery Institute’s Racial
Disparity Study, the 1998 Harvard Study
on Charleston’s Education System, the
recent Charleston County School District’s
(CCSD) strategic plan, and other relevant
data and experiences.
After several months of work, the
scenarios were shared with educators,
CCSD parents and community members
at the CCSD Board of Trustees meeting on
Jan. 28. The meeting was held in the Burke
High School auditorium to accommodate
the number of attendees.
The scenarios present four different
stories about what the future of education
might look like in 2035 in Charleston
County and some possible paths to get to
those endpoints.
In summary, they include:
1835: A fixed point in time, with no
movement forward
Sweetgrass Basket: A slow and intensive
process like that of making a basket. The
sweetgrass must be processed before it is
pliable enough to produce useful products.
Reconstruction: The need to reconstruct
a system that was designed not to benefit
all.
Techtowne: Technology drives the
future.
The scenarios are not predictions,
nor are they a vision, proposal, or plan.
However, they are plausible - the events
and actions in the scenarios make logical
sense and could take place.
They are challenging as they offer a
chance to notice blind spots and may
present ideas or insights not considered
before. They are relevant - they take
into account what is happening and has
happened in Charleston County.
Finally, they are clear - each scenario
incorporates critical certainties - things
known about 2035, and then uncertainties
- things that could change over that period
and cause different things to happen in
each scenario, which is what makes the
four scenarios distinctive and clear.
One of the participants, Vanessa
Brown, Principal of Baptist Hill Middle
High School, said she hopes that this
creates a sense of urgency in the Charleston
community to examine the CCSD system
and make drastic system changes and
process.
“We have become so used to this
being the way we do things, and we don’t
understand that our system has some
flaws,” Brown said. “Through this, I hope
we create reaction (and cause action), and
people will want to do things differently
and make decisions that to impact our
children now and impact our city – because
we are Charleston.”
Eric Thome, Director of Venture
South Charleston, also participated in
the process. He hopes the scenarios will
change the dialogue and how people think
and talk about the future of education in
Charleston.
“We know we have a segregated school
district and we know we have failing
schools,” Thome said. “Yet we don’t
change. So we have to understand that this
is a system that is failing our community. It
is not a failed system. It is a system working
exactly as designed.”
Local businessman and team member
Craig Ascue, a local paint and body shop
owner, also acknowledged that the local
education system is broken.
“What we found was that it was set up
for certain people to be successful and what
we found was a lot of people ended up not
being successful,” said Ascue. “I hope the
results will be that more people are intuned
to what the Charleston County School
system looks like.”
Three high school students were also
included in this Shared Future process. “I
hope this is not something thrown to the
side after a while,” said Early College High
School Sophomore Kyra Freeman. “I hope
people take the results we are bringing
to them, and they use it to better our
schools, our community, our kids and, our
teachers.”
Burke junior Anthony Brown has
hope for the next steps of the process. “I
want the community to get involved. I
don’t want this to die off. I want this to
keep going, so someone can solve this
solution,” Brown said. “Not as minorities,
but as one Charleston. Because we are
all Charlestonians, we are all South
Carolinians.”
Academic Magnet High School Junior
Sully Gholson was impressed to see such
a diverse group come together and put
aside differences. “It also helped me realize
that there are students out there that do
not have the same opportunities as I do,”
said Gholson. “There are inequities in our
district that need to be solved. But with
this group, I truly believe we can make that
happen.”
What happens next belongs to the
community. While CCSD represents a key
part of the education system, Charleston
County, its people and its organizations are
as critical to this effort as the school district
is and will help decide and facilitate next
steps.

to find. Fortunately, since 1989
Lowcountry children and youth have had
Shannon’s Hope Camp, the nation’s third
oldest bereavement camp for kids.
On Saturday, Mar. 2 from 4-7 p.m.,
Hope Takes Flight will celebrate 30 years
of learning, connecting, and healing for
grieving children. This late afternoon
event, taking place at The Citadel Beach
Club on Isle of Palms, features hors
d'oeuvres, drinks, camp-themed activities
and a short program highlighting the
remarkable impact of this transformative

A Lucky Dog Favorite
T
his is a great dish to use up that
leftover rotisserie chicken. Festive
enough for a luncheon and the
chicken skin chips make it a true southern
indulgence.
Ingredients:
4 cups diced, cooked chicken
6 small red, yellow and orange mini bell
peppers, chopped
6 green onions, white and green parts,
chopped
2 tsp Mad Mojo blend
1/4 cup mayonnaise
juice from 1 lime
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
Chicken skin from breast meat, optional
Directions:
Combine the chicken, peppers, onions,
spice blend, mayonnaise, lime juice and
Dijon mustard. Chill until ready to eat.
Serve on sandwiches or in lettuce cups.
If using the skin, preheat the oven to
375 degrees. Place the skin on parchment
or foil and bake for 15 minutes until very
crispy. Serve with salad.

Volvo Car Open adds 3 Americans to field

he Volvo Car Open has added three young
American tennis players to its 2019 field - Danielle
Collins, Sofia Kenin and Amanda Anisimova.
They join a strong international player field featuring
Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki, Kiki Bertens,
Madison Keys, Julia Goerges, Elise Mertens and Jelena
Ostapenko. The 2019 tournament is scheduled for March
30 – April 7 on Daniel Island.
Collins and Kenin will help lead the U.S. Fed Cup
team against Australia on February 9 - 10 in Asheville,
North Carolina.
Collins will compete in the Volvo Car Open for the
first time this year. The 25-year-old recently had a career
breakthrough when she reached the Australian Open
semifinals, defeating three top ranked seeds during the
tournament. Prior to the Australian Open, Collins had
never won a Grand Slam main draw match. In 2018,

Collins also defeated three seeds on the way to the Miami
Open’s semifinals, playing her way up from qualifying
rounds. Ranked World No. 23, she is also a two-time
NCAA collegiate tennis champion.

Review your fixed-income strategy as
interest rates rise
W
hen interest rates rise, the
value of your fixed-income
investments, such as bonds,
will typically fall. If this happens, how
should you respond?
First of all, it’s important to understand
this inverse correlation between interest
rates and bond prices. Essentially, when
interest rates rise, investors won’t pay you
full price for your bonds because they
can purchase newly issued ones that pay
higher rates. So, if you sell your bonds
before they mature, you could lose some
of the principal value.
You may be seeing a price drop among
your bonds right now, because interest
rates generally rose in 2018 and may
continue to do so in 2019. While you might
not like this decline, you don’t necessarily
have to take any action, particularly
if you’re planning to hold these bonds
until maturity. Of course, you do have
to consider credit risk, the chance that a
portion of the principal and interest will
not be paid back to investors, but unless
the bond issuers default, which is usually
unlikely, particularly with investment-
grade bonds, you can expect to receive the
same regular interest payments you always
did, no matter where rates move.

weather, it's still winter. But as a
tease, paper-whites are opening
up in the yard, and red maples are
already showing their bright flowers.

winter-sweets are scattered around the
neighborhood, and this afternoon we had
mystery plant
The twig of a nut

a brilliant yellow crocus near the bird-
bath. Here and there, the swelling bud of
a daffodil. This is about the time I start
getting serious cabin-fever, and longing
for the spring, which is still a good 6 or
7 weeks off, I guess. Meanwhile, there's
plenty of interesting botany. For instance,
our taxonomy class is still studying winter
twigs. You might not think that twigs
are interesting, until you settle down and
start examining them closely.
This is the twig of an eastern North
American deciduous tree. It occurs
naturally from southern Ontario west to
Iowa, and then broadly distributed all
the way to northern Florida, preferring
rich woods and floodplains. The buds of
the twig are a bit odd, in being "naked,"
or without prominent scales. The buds
themselves are somewhat velvety and
gray, equipped with lots of soft hairs.
Leaf scars, indicating where last year's leaf
was attached to the twig, are three-lobed.
Perhaps the most significant thing about
this twig is that its inner pith, right in the
middle, and revealed with a sharp knife
(be careful!), is what we call "chambered,"
with a series of disk-like, spongy segments
separated by discrete air chambers. (Not
many twigs have this feature; the pith of
most twigs is termed "continuous," that is,
not divided into little chambers.)
Otherwise, this is an easily identified
tree. It has roughly checkered, dark
bark. The trees are highly prized for
their beautifully-grained wood, which
is a somewhat "classic" source of fine
veneer, cabinetry, and gunstocks, and
which darkens somewhat as it ages. The

wood is so highly prized that there have
been instances of illicit harvest, or "tree
rustling," for it.
The tree's foliage is strongly and
pleasantly aromatic, and each leaf is
compound, with 12-20 or so tear-shaped
leaflets along the central, elongated
midrib. Male flowers occur in elongated,
scaly catkins in the spring, while the tiny
female flowers occur in small clusters.
Each developing fruit swells into a lemon-
sized, nut-like structure, surrounded by a
thick husk. By the middle of the summer,
the fruit may be up to 3" in diameter,
with a hard, lime-green skin. (By the
way, the genus name of this species,
and its various relatives, refers to this
massive nut-like structure, translating
into the name "Jove's nut.") The skin of
the developing fruit is fragrant, yielding
a marvelous lemony-spicy fragrance when
scratched. By late autumn, the fruits will
turn dark, nearly black, and then fall. Go
ahead and gather a basketful…there is a
delicious kernel inside, but available only
after getting through the husk. Put your
gloves on to do this, as the husk is capable
of dark stains. The kernel resides within a
hard shell, but that can be cracked open,
and then the sweet, nutritious meat can
be picked out.

W
ell, February is the wonderful
month of love, hearts and
flowers. This is also the month
that we focus on the heart and how to
keep it healthy.
The American Heart Association put
out a report stating that an astounding
number, nearly half of all U.S. adults, have
some form of heart or blood vessel disease
and heart disease is now the leading killer
of men and women in this country.
Is there anything we can do to prevent
to prevent us from experiencing this
problem? The answer is yes.
According to Steve Penkhus, M.D. of
Seabrook Island, there are several things
we can do to help ourselves. They include
maintaining a BMI of 20-25, exercising

30 minutes per day for 5 days, (or 60
minutes if you also want to lose weight).
In addition, we need to sleep 7-8 hours/
night, limit alcohol to no more than 2
alcohol drinks per day for men and 1 for
women, not smoke and avoid opiates.
According to Neal Barnard, M.D.
of Washington, D.C., the best way to
prevent or treat heart disease is to go on
a whole grain, plant based diet. He has
several books out entitled Kickstart Your
Health and his videos may be found on
YouTube. Some of my patients have tried
this diet and reduced their blood pressure
almost immediately.
