Subject: Radio Stations
Dear Renu ~
I nave no idea whether purchasing a second radio station is a good idea, or whether $9 million is a reasonable price ~
although the absolute sum is large in the hard economic time faced by Universities, both now and for the foreseeable
future.
‘As an aside, the Houston Chronicle suggested that an argument for the purchase is that bonds can be issued, so there is
ino immediate cost. Costs do not become less real by being postponed. You should ask John Antel to put on a
basic economics class for anyone who thinks otherwise.
| regard KUHT as having as close to perfect programming as anyone could expect - classical music, NPR news, and
assorted other programs on weekends -- | organize my Saturdays around Car Talk, Opera, and Garrison Keillor. At
100,000 watts, KUHT has a vast reach.
While troubled about the proposed purchase, | do not know enough to offer serious advice. What | am opposed to is the
part of the plan to realign the stations. Presently the University of Houston presents the 4th largest city in America with its
only classical music outlet. By shifting that to a 50,000 watt siation, the reach of the station will be substantially reduced ~
thereby undermining a UNIQUE service to the Houston area. [And, everyone associated with fund raising surely knows
that community leaders and affluent people skew toward listening to classical music.)
What about news and related programming? The air waves [not to mention the Internet] are full of such
programming already ~- so the new station would hardly offer a unique product. If UH goes this route, the
classical music station should remain at the 100,000 watt and 88.7 location.
Regards,
