munity round table dis-
cussions, items such as

named.
A “finish this sentence”
exercise was also held. The
opening sentence to fin-
ish was, “Minnedosa is
the best…” Some of the
responses included, “kept
secret/hidden gem”, “val-
ley paradise” and “place to
take a break.” The second
sentence to finish was
“Minnedosa is the first…”
which the group answered,
“stop from Brandon.” An-
other one was “Minnedosa
has the most…” to which
responses includes “walk-
ing trails”, “fun experi-
ences”, “natural beauty”,
“outdoor adventures” and
“potential”. The final sen-
tence was, “Minnedosa
has the only…” which was
completed with highlights
such as “bison in town”,
“ski hill in Westman”, “fully
restored octagon building”
and “outdoor pond hockey
and curling in Manitoba.”
From the brainstorm-
ing and information shar-
ing that was done during
the strategic planning ses-
sion, it is hoped that this
information can benefit
those in attendance and

sentatives in greater tour-
ism related adventures
and marketing for the
community.

have a pet peeve over anything, I just want to help where
I can. To me, it’s all about service. I want to continue to
make Minnedosa great and show people that you don’t
have to be a business owner to get involved. I feel it is im-
portant to have the younger community members take
part in boards and feel welcomed, having been heard
and valued for their voice. Together we can do anything.
I can also offer that on the second and fourth Tuesday of
every month I will make myself available at a local coffee
shop at 5:00 p.m. for anyone who would like to come by
and talk to me before council meetings.”

Additional Comments: “I see so much potential for
growth and maintaining our area such as partnering with
RM’s to bring in new industries or looking at a soybean
plant or factories, bringing new people to our area who
will then buy houses and shop locally and have children
in our schools, it’s all a snowball effect that all benefits
our town. We need our community residents to shop
at our local stores and support businesses in our area.

that’s less money in our town and our taxes go up, etc. We
have to support each other here.”

together and respects each other and moves forward for the greater good of our com-

around as father was an RCMP officer, Mark moved back
to Minnedosa with his family in 1995. Previous owner
and operator of Blazers Convenience Store, retiring in

Celebrate and Support Small Businesses

ness Week in Canada and as Canadians we have
a lot to celebrate and be thankful for when it comes

services are available to us right here at home.

moving forward with
its Manitoba Climate and
Green Plan, but without a
provincial carbon tax. We
are also standing up for
Manitobans by opposing
the federal government’s
planned escalating carbon
tax that would damage our
province’s economy.
Our made-in-Manito-
ba plan had initially pro-
posed a flat carbon price
of $25 per tonne of green-
house gas emissions to pro-
vide stability to consum-
ers, business, industry and
agriculture, and to support
our government’s vision
for a prosperous and grow-
ing green economy. Our
fixed carbon levy would
have saved Manitoba fami-
lies and businesses more
than $260 million over five
years, compared to the
federal government’s plan
for a higher and rising car-
bon tax. And all revenue
collected under our plan
would have been returned
to Manitoba households in
tax relief while remaining
in our province to be used
for Manitoba priorities,
stimulating green innova-
tion and creating jobs.
As well, our flat carbon
price would have achieved
more emissions reduc-
tions in Manitoba than the
federal carbon tax of $50
per tonne. However, the
federal government has
stated it would impose its
escalating carbon tax over
and above the Manitoba
levy after one year. This
would mean twice the tax
with poorer results - hurt-
ing our ability to attract
business capital to our
province, threatening jobs
and economic growth and
taking money away from
Manitoba families. This is
unacceptable.
Our government is no
longer proceeding with a
Manitoba carbon tax, and
will fight Ottawa on the
federal carbon tax plan
that would take money
from Manitobans’ pockets
and hurt our economy.
Based on the four pil-
lars of cleaner water, con-
servation of natural areas,
steps to address climate
change and strengthening
the economy, our Manito-
ba Climate and Green Plan
will continue to encourage
investments in renewable
energy and a reduction in
energy consumption. Our
plan has been acknowl-
edged widely, even by Ot-
tawa, as the best such strat-
egy in Canada.
We are saying yes to
our made-in-Manitoba
Climate and Green Plan,
which would make a posi-
tive and lasting impact on
the environment and our
economy for generations
to come. But we are stand-
ing up for the interests of
Manitobans and saying no
to a carbon tax.
to small businesses. These ventures, which are clas-
sified as having between five and 99 employees are
the heartbeat of many communities, especially small,
rural communities. Without small businesses, these
rural communities would not survive.
Small businesses not only provide products and/
or services to customers and clients, but also provide
employment opportunities in communities. In addi-
tion, they give back and support their community
through donations and sponsorships. No matter how
many small businesses there are or how well stocked
and well-managed they may be, they cannot survive
without the support of customers and clients. If a small
business does not survive and has to close its doors,
there is a spiralling effect of negative impacts which
many people may not realize. If a business closes,
there is an empty space which never looks good along
any street. There is also the loss of jobs bringing with it
unemployment concerns for former staff members of
that business. There may be the loss of availability to
get certain products in that community forcing former
customers and clients to look elsewhere to purchase
those items. If they now have to purchase these items
in a different community or online, that takes import-
ant spending dollars out of the community. When a
business closes, it also means that local fundraisers,
projects, etc. which used to receive donations, spon-
sorships or donated prizes for events, will now suffer
the blow of less support for their project or program.
There is never anything good that comes out of the
closure of a small business.
As consumers in a small community, we each have
an important role to play in supporting our local busi-
nesses which helps keep our community alive and vi-
brant. Local Chambers of Commerce have promoted
shopping local for generations and for good reason – it
is one of the most vital part of a healthy community.
Our Minnedosa Chamber of Commerce currently has
a strong membership of 125 businesses which provide
our trading area with a good variety of products and
services. In addition, there are a number of local busi-
nesses that are not Chamber members. We need to
check our local business out, see what they have avail-
able, what they offer and support them. I have always
been of the mindset that if you can buy it locally you
should so that those businesses can continue to oper-
In today’s world, online shopping is becoming
more and more popular. People can shop for pretty
much everything online conveniently whenever they
have time to – even if it’s late at night long after local
businesses have closed. They can shop from the com-
fort of their home and have their purchase delivered
right to their door. While this may be convenient,
let’s stop and think what this does for our commun-
ity. When you find a great deal online you spend your
money with a company that may be located in a large
city, outside of your home province or even in a dif-
ferent country. You have just supported a business
which has no connection with your home community
and most likely will never spend a cent to donate or
sponsor your local festivals, youth programs, athletics
and community fundraisers. If everyone did this, we
would lose our local businesses and our community
would lose it’s many non-profit events and programs
that receive support from local businesses. Supporting
local small businesses and shopping locally first is ex-
tremely important to ensure a successful community.
Even if it sometimes means spending a little bit more,
is the added value that those local businesses give
back to your community not worth it?
As we celebrate Small Business Week, here are
some statistics which re-enforce the popularity and
importance of our country’s small business sector. Ac-
cording to the Business Development Bank of Canada
(BDC), a whopping 99.7 percent of all businesses in
Canada are classified as small or medium sized. These
small businesses contribute to 41 percent of Canada’s
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and nine out of ten
Canadians who work in the private sector work in a
small business. That amounts to 10.5 million people!
During Small Business Week, I encourage every-
one to check out what is available in your hometown
business district. If there is a new, small business that
has recently opened in your community that you have
not checked out yet, Small Business Week is the per-
fect time to stop in and see what they offer or maybe
it’s time to check in at a long-time local business
whose door you have not passed through in a long
time. Stop in, say hi, make a purchase and thank the
business owner for being a valued supporter of your
community. Without your business, our communities
will suffer.

Climate and Green Plan

edged as the best in Cana-
da.
Our plan focuses on
four pillars of cleaner wa-
ter, conservation of natu-
ral areas, effective steps to
address climate change,
and strengthening our
economy. It continues our

and build new schools to a

impose a carbon tax, but
only on provinces that do
not implement plans of
their own. Our Climate
and Green Plan, which is
better for our economy
and better for our envi-
ronment, was designed
by Manitobans to protect
Manitobans and to keep
Ottawa’s hands out of our
pockets.
Our Made-in-Manito-

very shortly going to be planning for
the 2019/2020 season! A reminder that
season’s tickets can be purchased at the
local library.
Our goal as an organization is to
bring top quality entertainment to
Minnedosa. This is important to us
for a number of reasons. In the winter
months, it can be a challenge to make it
to a city such as Brandon or Winnipeg,
given early darkness, less than ideal
road conditions and the cost of fuel.
Winter is long in Manitoba and the
prediction for an even longer winter
this year makes getting out and seeing
friends and neighbours really impor-
tant to our wellbeing. We also believe
listening to live music is great for our
teenage sons. Their camaraderie and
harmony make their show highly en-
tertaining. They play their own music,
with a fun cover tune thrown in here
and there.
A month later we will be decking
the halls with the Brandon Commu-
nity Orchestra on December 5th, also
in the TCS pit. The orchestra is unique
in that these are individuals with other
careers that come together through the
love of music to entertain Brandon and
surrounding communities.
The Royal Manitoba Theatre
Centre will be bringing us “Buying
the Farm” on February 18th at the
Minnedosa Community Conference
Centre. The rural theme will be sure to
make a connection with us and as al-
ways, the acting and set will be of high-
est quality.

is once again available
free of charge to all Mani-
tobans aged six months
and older, Health, Seniors
and Active Living Minis-
ter Cameron Friesen an-
nounced earlier this week
at the official launch of
the annual influenza im-
munization campaign.
“Getting the flu vac-
cine is important for the
health of all Manitobans,
but especially for those
at increased risk of ser-
ious illness from the flu,
their caregivers, and close
family and friends,” said
Friesen, who received his
vaccination this morning at
Morden Drugstore.  “Every
Manitoban knows an in-
fant, a senior, someone
with diabetes or asthma,
or someone seeking treat-
ment for cancer.  Because
of this, I encourage Mani-
tobans to protect them-
selves, as well as others,
by getting their no-charge
flu immunization this fall.”
Forty-six people with
lab-confirmed cases of the
flu died in Manitoba last
winter, the highest num-
ber in three years, while
another 35 were admitted
into intensive care units.  In
total, there were 505 hospi-
talizations due to influenza
during the 2017-18 season,

colour match wood filler
pencil/crayon specifically
designed to hide scratches.
Option number two: Wipe
a rag with matching stain
over wood to hide scratch-
es. Have a piece of smoked
glass cut and smoothed to
fit the wood. Glass cutters
may often include rubber
feet for each corner so that
the glass can’t slide out
of position. The glass will
hide the scratches. Op-

for each unit. The prob-
lem is that in cool damp
weather the flue for the
wood burner backdrafts
and we end up with an ac-
rid smell in the house. We
have tried putting in a new
stove, stuffing paper in the
door and latching it and
we have tried bowls of kitty
litter in the stove without
success. Do you have any

Dear Barry,
a woodstove on a frigid
day and you won’t want
to leave your home, but
sometimes the unwel-
come smell of a woodstove
can send you running. You
were smart to replace the
older wood stoves with an
airtight model that will re-
duce harmful emissions
because even if you wise-
ly and thoroughly clean
the stove box often, any
traces of ashes will fill the
room with odor. Here are
a few additional solutions
to try: Close the damper
whenever not in use. Add
a top sealing damper and a
tight-fitting glass fireplace
screen. Pouring vinegar
into the box of the screen
will not be strong enough
to combat the odor which
is coming from the pipe
and sides and top of the
box, proper sealing is your
best solution.

able fabric. Place the item
in a clean kitchen sink.
Soak the area with Dawn
dish soap. Pour hot water
onto the washable fab-
ric and watch the stain
melt away. For fabric that
should not hit water, put
1 tbsp. Dawn dish soap in
a bowl with 2 cups water.
Beat with an egg beater.
Smear the foam onto the
stain and dab until gone.

with the walls now being well above ground level. The
building will be a most substantial one with exterior and
partition walls being solid brick. There is so much brick
on site that a recent visitor from a neighbouring com-
munity asked, “Whose brickyard is this?”

1948 – Town Council is seeking some way to keep the
river running through town all winter, following this
spring’s collapse of the dam.
1958 – John Grant of the Cameron District has raised
the first pea crop in the area in over ten years. Mr. Grant
raised 60 acres of peas. The last crop of considerable acre-
age was raised by Fred Gugin as well as some in the Bass-
wood, Newdale area over a decade ago.
1968 – The first train crossed the overpass on the new
bypass last Wednesday. Work on the bypass is progress-
ing rapidly and highway engineers are hoping for good
weather well into November to ensure completion before
freeze-up.
1978 – Jim Clark has been appointed President of the
Minnedosa Minor Athletic Association for the 1978-79
season. Mr. Clark succeeds Dick MacDonald, who will
continue on the executive as Past President. Other offi-
cials include Mel Nagorski, Karen Parenteau, Bob Willis,
Jack McNabb, Benny Nagorski, Bill Ringrose and Norman
Wahoski.
1998 – Town Council heard from a delegation from the
Minnedosa Golf and Country Club which presented
a project feasibility study for a proposed expansion to
make Minnedosa an 18-hold golf course. Club members
will vote on the proposal next month.
