(a) Size of atom decrease in period 3 from sodium to chlorine 1
• proton number increasing
[or positive charge in nucleus increasing] 1
• the attraction of nucleus towards the electron become strong. 1
• The electron become near to the nucleus 1
(b)(i) • Sodium atom has electron arrangement of 2.8.1 1
• Sodium atom donate one valence electron to achieve octet stability 1
• Chlorine atom has electron arrangement of 2.8.7, 1
• Chlorine atom receive one electron at the outermost shell to achieve octet stability 1
• Sodium positive ion Na+ and negative ion Cl- that formed is pull by electrostatic
attraction force that are strong
1
(b)(ii) • + -
In sodium chloride, ion Na and Cl that had opposite charge was pull together by 1
strong electrostatic force. 1
• A lot of energy needed to overcome this force 1

(c)(i) • 2Na + 2H2O  2NaOH + H2 1

number of mol of Na = 0.86 ÷ 23

= 0.0374 mol 1
2 mol Na  1 mol H2
0.0374 mol  0.0374 ÷ 2 = 0.0187 mol H2
1
= 0.0187 X 24 dm3
= 0.4488 dm3
• Potassium is more reactive, followed by sodium and lithium. 1
(c)(ii)
From lithium to potassium,
• Size of atom increase, 1
• Distance between the nucleus with valence electron is increasingly far, 1
• Attraction of nucleus to valence electron is more weaken 1
1
• Valence electron is easily loose

Aim
To compare/investigate the reactivity of lithium, sodium and potassium metal based on 3
the reaction with water.

Hipothesis:
The lower the position of the alkali metals/metal in group 1, the highest the reactivity with
water.
3
variabale
a) Manipulated : type of alkali metal
3
b) Responding : reactivity of reaction
c) Fixed : size of metal

Materials
Lithium, sodium and potassium metal, water. 3

Apparatus
Basin, pocket knife, forseps/thong/princers, white tiles, filter paper

Procedur
• Lithium metal is remove from paraffin oil by using pincers and place it on a
white tile
• A small portion of lithium metal is cut by using knife
• Paraffin oil must be dry by using filter paper
• A basin is filled with water
• The small portions of lithium metal is placed on the surface of water in the basin
by using the pincers 3
• The changes like the reactivity of the reaction is record
• The experiment is repeat by using sodium and potassium metal.
