What Is SBEAP?
The Small Business EnvironmentalAssistance Program, SBEAP, was ini-tiated as a result of the Clean Air ActAmendments of 1990. SBEAP helpssmall businesses comply with envi-ronmental regulations by providingtechnical assistance, introducingbusinesses to pollution preventionpractices, and offering complianceassistance to help with environmen-tal permitting and reporting require-ments. In Kansas, the PollutionPrevention Institute at Kansas StateUniversity is the technical assistanceprovider for SBEAP. All SBEAP serv-ices are completely confidential,non-regulatory, and free.Because services are free, SBEAPprovides guidance in compliance andtechnical matters to businesses thatotherwise would not have access tosuch help because of financial con-straints. Its staff can introduce youto such practices as changes in prod-uct design, substitution of materials, process optimization, waste mini-mization, and recycling—all of which can help diminish the burdenof compliance and protect the envi-ronment.SBEAP operates independently of the Kansas Department of Healthand Environment, KDHE, but coordi-nates with the agency to ensure thatSBEAP’s interpretation of Kansasregulations is consistent withKDHE's intent. To obtain technical assistance orrequest an on-site assessment, call800-578-8898. SBEAP also operatesa Web page at
www.sbeap.org
. Itcontains SBEAP publications, includ-ing our quarterly newsletter, KansasAIRlines. It also has industry-specificinformation and a calendar of events.
