Course Code: Tour 101B Credit Units: 3 (units)


Course Title: Principles of Tourism 2

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

A three unit course that orient the students to the socio-economic, cultural and environmental impacts of
tourism. It provides an overview of various sectors, components of tourism industry - their development, type,
composition and role in the tourism industry, as well as the various trends and types of operation of each sector.
Specifically, it also discusses the lodging, food service, transportation, recreation and leisure as well the
gaming and entertainment industry. Moreover, this course presents a comprehensive survey of the major players that
comprise the tourism industry and how they relate with each other. The nature and distinctive aspects of tourism are
discussed and linked to specific business strategies. The major sectors (business, government, and voluntary
organizations, etc.) are defined and classified. The commercial sectors are examined in terms of typical
organizational structures and major functions of divisions within the structure are described. Impacts of macro-
environmental trends and events on each sector are examined. The course also identifies the employment
opportunities available in each sector and the corresponding qualifications for the jobs.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course the students are expected to:

1. Appreciate the nature of the tourism industry and tourism product;


2. Identify the various sectors that comprise the tourism industry and the role played by each sector
in the production, distribution and delivery of tourism goods and services
3. Distinguish the various classifications of each sector and corresponding standards;
4. Understand the typical organizational structure of main tourism business entities and the functions
of the relevant divisions within the structure;
5. Understand the impact of macro-environmental trends on the operations of tourism businesses
and;
6. Have an understanding of career options in the tourism industry
