1050 York Research Tower RE: COPYING AT YORK UNIVERSITY

4700 Keele St.
Toronto ON
Canada M3J 1P3

Tel 416 736 5310 York University’s licence with Access Copyright to make copies of published
Fax 416 736 5094 material expires on December 31, 2010. Access Copyright represents certain
copyright owners and collects license fees on their behalf from institutions for
photocopying of their published material.

Copies of published material may still be made after the Access Copyright licence
expires if:

(1) you have permission or another licence from the copyright owner to
copy the material; or
(2) the copying is done within the definition of “fair dealing”.

Fair Dealing

The law permits copying that is defined as “fair dealing”. Fair dealing is making a
copy of a portion of a work for the purposes of your research, private study, criticism,
review, or news reporting subject to certain conditions. Please see attached Fair
Dealing Guidelines for those conditions.

Licences

York University Libraries has negotiated copyright licences directly with publishers
to permit members of the university community to copy without payment of
additional fees. York University Libraries has also purchased digital subscriptions to
allow access and copying of many journals.

In addition, there are public domain materials and works available for copying
through open access or Creative Commons licences.

Liability and Copyright Clearance

1
Copying outside fair dealing or without a licence or permission may result in personal
liability for copyright infringement and increases the risk of copyright infringement
claims against the university. Classroom handouts of copyrighted material that are
printed after December 31, 2010 may require copyright clearance before they are
distributed. Copyrighted materials uploaded on to e-learning/course sites may require
permission of the copyright owner. York University’s Copyright Clearance
Centre can assist in obtaining the permission required. Course kits, reproduced in
print or digital formats will continue to be produced by the Copyright Clearance
Centre, which will seek permission directly from the copyright owners.

Before copying, if you have any questions, contact the Copyright Clearance Centre
located in the Keele Bookstore, at ckits@yorku.ca, (416)736-2100 ext 40706.
