Hi guys, are you wondering about our department? Here is
a brief about English Department and its history…
English Department is one of the best departments in IAIN
Antasari. It has good facilities, library, and great lecturers who are
expected to be able to create many agents of change not only for
IAIN Antasari and the surrounding area but also for our beloved
country, Indonesia. English Department at IAIN Antasari becomes a
favorite department among the senior high school's fresh
graduates. No wonder that it has more than 300 students now.
The main objectives of English department are producing
qualified scholars/teachers with good English ability in linguistics
and literature, and are able to be the professional English teacher in
all levels and have high Islamic value and attitude.

History of English Department

According to the document of English Department and
“Buku Kenang-kenangan 30 tahun Fakultas Tarbiyah IAIN
Antasari Banjarmasin”, English Department (Tadris Bahasa Inggris/
TBI) established in 1984 with the first head of department was Drs.
H. Kadir Munsyi, Dipl.Ad.Ed and Drs. H. Ahdi Makmur, M.Ag as
secretary. After the period of Drs. H. Kadir Munsyi, Dipl.Ad.Ed
and Drs. H. Ahdi Makmur, the department was led by Drs. H.
Syarifuddin Syukur, MA and Drs. Ahdi Makmur, M.Ag. In
academic year 1988/1989 English Department was closed
temporarily because of the operational permission letter
from the Department of Religious Affairs (DEPAG) had
not been published yet.
The department was re-opened in 1997 and it became
department of English Education (Pendidikan Bahasa
Inggris/PBI) which was led by Drs. H. Ahdi Makmur, M. Ag
and Drs. Sa'adillah as secretary. Because Drs.
Sa'adillah pursued his study for a master degree,
the secretary position was replaced by Drs. Husnul
Yaqin, M.Ed. In 2003-2006, the secretary was
Dra. Wardah Hayati. On September 2005 until 2006, the head of English
Department is Drs. Isa Anshari MZ and Dra. Hj. Nida Mufidah, M. Pd as the
secretary. Because Drs. Isa Anshari passed away, the English Department was led
by Drs. Anang Syaifuddin, M. A and Dra. Hj. Nida Mufidah, M.Pd still as the
secretary. Hovewer, in August 2007, Mr. Anang Syaifuddin resigned due to his
overwhelmed things to do and Dra. Hj. Nida Mufidah, M.Pd was then appointed
to replace him.
There are still some changes of the leadership at English Department. Dra.
Hj. Nida Mufidah, M.Pd is still the head of the department up to now but the
secretary has been changing several times. It was Nurlaila Kadariyah, S.Ag on
January 2008-December 2009, and continued by Ridha Fadillah, M.Ed till June
2010 and the newest one is Nani Hizriani M.A.
Well guys, that's a bit about our department. Hope by knowing this, you will love
it more and more everyday… :)

 ESA (English Student Association), Tarbiyah Faculty, IAIN
Antasari Banjarmasin is a group of English Department student
which is assembled by strong will to develop this beloved
department and make it the best of all departments at IAIN Antasari
and Kalimantan. ESA is not merely as a bridge between student and
lecturers, office staffs and other academic administrations, but also
as a place for accommodating English Department students' ideas
and help them in several aspects especially in academic. Thus, ESA
is expected to give big contribution for improving students'
academic ability and organizational aspect.
As its vision, ESA desires to achieve good generations of
English Department that have good quality, superior, and
competitive. By facilitating the students, ESA wants their skills and
abilities sharpened and better in quality than other students in other
departments. Further, English Department students' skills and
abilities can compete with other departments and other universities.
To achieve its vision, ESA always makes an effort to be better
in managing its programs and achieved its missions. It tries to create
conducive atmosphere in English Department environment as a
place for accommodating students' creations, expressions and
scientific value improvement dealing with study successfulness. For
instance, there are divisions/sections of ESA which specially handle
certain fields, such as Art and Sport Division that organize art and
sport, Literature Section which manage English Department's
library, etc. ESA also helps students to participate actively in
developing and improving process of English Department's
generation by thinking critically, creatively, and innovatively.
Finally, ESA as a place of assembled students to reach vision
and mission of making English Department the best at IAIN Antasari
Banjarmasin takes several actions to help the students to improve
their skills and abilities and makes some effort to create conducive
situation in English Department environment.

 Becoming a singer was her childhood dream. When she was
getting older, she changed her goal. She wanted to be a doctor. She
never thought before that she will be a teacher such she does today.
When she went to collage, she chose Biology major.
After collage, her teaching story begun. He went to Guatemala,
South of Mexico, for thirteen months. In Guatemala, she said there
were very poor village. She taught English and Biology for little
children.
“My students were poor children but they were so cute.” She said
expressively, “They went to school wearing pajamas. They are very
enthusiastic about school. They went to school earlier everyday and
when I came, they rush into me. They always showed their inquisitive
when I encountered them to new things. They loved everything I
taught.”
Then she said that looking their faces changed, their
happiness has become a transformed experience that
completely changed her carrier goal.
Global Undergraduate Exchange Program
The Global UGRAD Program provides scholarships for one semester or one
academic year of U.S. Study in a NON-DEGREE Program. All global UGRAD
Program participants will be enrolled full-time in undergraduate course work
chosen from the US Institution's existing curriculum. Students will also be provided
with opportunities to participate in up to ten hours of community service per
semester and an internship to all academic-year participants. Applicants must:
Ÿ Enroll in S1 degree programs and have completed their first semester or are

entering their 5 semester by the time of application (students of 6 semester
and above are not eligible)
Ÿ Have a minimum institutional TOEFL score of 500
Ÿ Preference will be given to those who have had little / NO experience in the U.S.

How to Apply
Candidates should complete the appropriate application forms and return them
to AMINEF by the application deadline. Forms are available either by mail, in
person at the AMINEF Office, Gedung Balai Pustaka, Lt. 6, Jl. Gunung Sahari Raya
4, Jakarta 10720, or via the AMINEF Website (www.aminef.or.id). Please to return
the AMINEF your complete application package by the application deadline that
included:
Ÿ Completed application form. This includes a clearly written and concise study
objective.
Ÿ Copy of your most recent, less than two years old, TOEFL score report.
Ÿ One letter of reference, either from your current employer or previous lecturer.

“My name is Al Amin. I was born in Cirebon on March 13 , 1989. Initially,
I saw an overseas scholarship brochure and it arose my wish to get it. My
purpose is to get a new experience about something that I never know
before (culture and some other interesting things) and as well as to deepen
my English language skill. Then, I started joining some training such as
TOEFL and keep learning to improve my listening, structure, and reading
and I boosted my optimism and my confidence and eventually I GOT IT!!!

I went to Arkansas Universty on October 15 , 2009 and stayed there for
about two months to learn join an English Course. At my first time there, I
experienced a culture shock. Fortunately, I have got a pre-departure
orientation about the culture and it helped me a bit to adjust with cultural
life there. I got an incredible experience about many things. I would love to
share with you all some other time.
Well, Guys, Everything is possible. Be confident and don't be afraid to
try and Keep Learning!!!
 “My name is Mutiara Citra Dewi. I was
born In Rantau on March 11th 1987. When
I was child, I had a dream to study abroad and
learn about the culture and speak with English native
speakers. When I arrived in America, I felt surprise, it never
crossed in my mind that everything is so far different; the changes
of weather, the language, and also the food there. It was totally new
atmosphere for me. Yet, I had fun because I have many new friends and I
learned about culture and the important thing is the education system in
America is well organized and managed. Yeah, I have learned much about
American's life style. And for you all, never stop learning; don't just learn in
the classroom. You can learn from many sources that can support your
abilities especially in English. Never doubt to reach your dream, although
in your mind it is so impossible. Look at me. I proved it.

- ½ kg of wheat flour
- ½ kg of rice flour
- 1 tablespoon of tapioca flour
- ½ kg of sugar
- 1 egg
- 5 g of vanilla powder
- 50 g of strawberry jam
- Cheese
- Creamer milk
- A little salt
- 50 g of smooth palm sugar
- Oil for frying
- 1 ½ glasses of water

First, peel and slice the banana into two parts.

Then, mix the wheat flour, rice flour, tapioca flour, a
little salt. Next, smear the banana by immersing into
the mixture. After that, fry the banana in a frying pan
with oil until it's brown on both sides. Finally, sow the
banana with strawberry jam, creamer milk, smooth
palm sugar and the last is cheese.

- First, steam the rice until it's cooked, leave it

cold about two hours
- Second, slice thinly onion and garlic, and also
seed and slice the chili. Or you may grind the
onion, garlic and chili together on the mortar
- Third, heat the oil or butter on the frying pan
- Fourth, add the onion, garlic and chili. Fry for
two minutes
- Fifth, season the salt, soya sauce and tomato
ketchup. Then, put all the rice and stir
continuously until it well heated about five to
eight minutes
- Then, serve this fried rice in a plate
- Now, take two eggs and make an omelet. Cut
the omelet into slices and put around the fried
rice
- Finally, garnish it with the slice of tomatoes and
cucumber, fried onion and krupuk

Wita was just silent. “Erlina…!!!
Calm down, please! You ask me many
questions.” Wita was fairly angry.
“Sorry wit, I just about you.” Erlina
appeared afraid.
“Okay. Thank you, Elin. I am okay
today. No problem. Nothing” Wita
replied fastly.
“Really Wit? You are lying. I do not
believe with you. Your face appears
sad and sick, you are so tired.” Elina
look at Wita.
“That is true, Elin?” Wita
responded. “Okay, but you hide
something from me. We are friends. I
really know you. I do not want to see
you like this.” Elina was so sure to
herself.
“Stop…!!! Elin... I just want to be
alone here. Leave me, please!” Wita
has very bored.
“No, I will not.” Elina forced.
“Oh my God… you can bother me if
you are still here. You are my friend, it
is true but it does not mean you have
to know everything in my life. Once
more, leave me!” Wita was crying and
she asked so loudly.
“What is wrong? Do I make
mistake?” Elina appeared confused.
“No, Elin. Go!!!” Wita replied
louder.
Elina has to leave her friend Wita. “I
have to know, what happened with
her. I must help her. Ooo… is it
possible because of her parent's
fighting? I am going to ask her again. I
do not care anything.” Elina promised
to herself.
In an early morning…
“Wit… Wait!!!” Elina called Wita
loudly.
“What else? I have to go now.” Wita
said.
“Are you my friend? You are
changed. You know? Go please! If you
want I will not interfuse your life
anymore.” Elina was disappointed.
Wita walk away from Elina, but at
the moment she goes back to Elina. “I
am sorry. I hurt you, I do not mean like
that. I do not want to share my
sadness. I do not want you to be like
me too.” Wita was so sad and she
replied slowly.
“Well, I try to understand. I think
friendship is to share either happiness
or sadness. Believe me!! Talk about
your problem. It will make you more
comfortable.” Elina gave her opinion
in order Wita believe her.
“I realize, there has been complete
change over in my life when my
parents divorced. It was likely to
happen to everyone.” Wita started to
talk.
“Nevertheless, you have to know,
which is different is how to solve that.”
Elina shared her idea. “Wait, you
never talk about this. When did they
divorce? Sorry?” Elina asked carefully.
“Six months ago.” Wita replied
sadly. My mother really hates my
father, because he left her with
another woman and they will get
married soon. That is the last
information which I know. I feel so
sorry to see my mother. She often
cries. I did not know what my father's
reason so that he left her. They often
fight. It makes me so afraid. I was
forbidden to meet my father by my
mother. She threatened to stop my
study in this campus if I met him.
Although, my father was heartless, I
really love both of them. I will not
change forever. Elin… I understand my
mother's feeling, but it is not a good
choice if I must be sacrificed. I cannot
hate my father. I cannot see my mother
like that too. What is the best thing for
solving it?” Wita really expect an
answer from Elina. “It is possible if I
will not meet my father anymore
and also stop my study. Oh my God…
this is so hard.” Wita appeared
sressed. “I do not talk to you because it
is an embarrassing thing for me.
Forgive mr, Elin! I was an impolite to
you.” Wita regretted.
“If I were in your position, I will not
be as strong as you have parents. You
knew my father passed away two
years ago.” Elina tried to support Wita.
“Once again, sorry… I do not
mean.” Wita said.
“You can make a good relationship
with you parents. I believe you just
need time. Share your feeling. Make
them understand. Say to them, they
had loved each. You must be patient.
You have to make the best effort. You
can do it. I will help you as much as
possible. Trust me!!!” Elina was smiled.

In this story, Abdullah bin Abbas r.a.

Huhuhu,,, it is not as easy as what you think guys!
For some students, it may be just an easy thing to achieve, but you should know that
not every people can achieve it easily and even for some people it seems impossible.
Usually for getting a good grade is determined by some factors, such as difficult
subject, difficult task's questions, in addition your lecture teach you in boring way,,, huh
it's really makes you are so lazy to pay attention to the explanation and as the result of
those, you do not understand and lazy to study it.
Ups… what a complete problem…? hehehe
But you don't have to worry guys...
Here are some top tips that will help you to solve your big problem…
Let check them out…

M You must state your aim…! A strong aim and ambition will help you to get everything
that you want easier.
M Attend every meeting on time… and you have to make sure if you have the class
schedule. Sometimes there are some lecturers change their schedule because of
certain reason, so never miss to know it.
M Make a phone tree with your classmate, so you and your friends can exchange
much important information.
M Show and give your lecturers some respect. You should remember guys, every
people like to be respected by someone.
M Try to make prediction about what might be tested on the middle test and final test.
It really makes you easier to prepare for them.
M Be active in class…! You must remember do not be an over active student and more
over does not be Mr. or miss know-it-all. Because it will be a big problem for you, not
only your lecture but also your friends will not like you.
M Guys… you should remember, study is the most important thing to do…! Everything
will not change and you will not get your best score if you do not prepare it by
studying. So if you do not understand about a certain chapter you can consult it to
your friend who understands better.
M Do every homework that is assigned by your lecturers and do not forget to submit it
at the due time.
M Never miss the class examination!! Except for something that is very important and
cannot predict before like illness, accident, etc and do not forget to give information
to your so they can understand your condition.
M Last but not least, say a prayer in order to make every thing that we have done can
get the best result.

”Eyes are important parts of your body. Therefore, it's no wonder that
there are many expressions in English that use the word “eye” or “eyes”.
Here are a number of them.

Ÿ An eye for an eye = revenge taken in a similar way for an injustice.

The king wanted an eye for the death of his eldest son. That means that
he wanted the death of his enemy's eldest son, too.

Ÿ Be all eyes = to give all one's attention to something; look intently.

Tommy was all eyes for Emmy. She was so beautiful.

Ÿ (Be) easy on the eyes = attractive, beautiful. The view from the
hotel window was easy on the eyes.

Ÿ Catch someone's eye = to draw or attract someone's attention.

During the written test, Randy tried to catch the eye of his buddy
George.

Ÿ Give (someone) the eye = (informal) to look fixedly at (another

person) esp. with obvious admiration; ogle. The pretty new coed
ignored the senior student who was giving her the eye.

Ÿ Have an eye for = to be able to appreciate something in particular.
