Kwanzaa— In 1966, Dr. Maulana “Ron” Karenga created Kwanzaa. He wanted black people to
feel better about being black. Kwanzaa is celebrated December 26 through January 1 of each
year so that African Americans can celebrate their heritage both from Africa and America. This
is why most of the words of Kwanzaa are in the language Kiswahili. Kwanzaa has seven
Principles called the Nguzo Saba. The seven principles are: Umoja or Unity; Kujichagulia or
Self-determination; Ujima or Collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa or Cooperative
economics; Nia or Purpose; Kuumba or Creativity; and Imani or Faith.
