Why is
Melbourne
a food desert?
F or the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival
the Digger’s Club was asked to create a
food garden in Melbourne’s city square. Once
installed, it generated a huge reaction; people
were drawn to the abundance like Arabs to an
oasis in the desert. To think that our garden
was the only fresh food source in the city
centre.

How can it be that Melbourne is the food

capital of Australia but that its city centre is
a food desert? We have a huge and diverse
collection of restaurants but all dependent on
food that is never local and never fresh.

Within the confines of its city boundaries

Havana, the capital of Cuba, grows 60% of
all its food. We could do the same in Sydney,
Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane if we chose (Above) Digger’s

Clever Clover Kit S oil is at the root of nearly all gardening
problems. Gardeners who neglect what
happens beneath the surface of the soil are Green Manur
invariably disappointed with the development
of the foliage, the formation of fruit and the
eventual harvest.
It is the soil that provides and assists
plants with their nutrient uptake, and holds
the water and air that plants need to thrive.
Sowing a green manure crop is an easy,
inexpensive, and fairly maintenance free way
of improving the health of the soil. These crops
have many benefits.
Green Manures not only increase the
organic content of the soil, but add valuable
nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.
They provide an organic mulch that suppresses
weeds and improves the soil’s ability to hold
water. DIG IN AS FLOWERING BEGINS

Sowing seeds
Direct method
– for outdoor sowings
This is the simplest method to germinate vegetable seed. All
root crops should be sown using this method to eliminate
disturbance that can cause misshapen roots. Begin by removing
all weeds and preparing the soil. Break up any big clumps
and incorporate some well rotted organic matter or blood and
bone. Spread this evenly through the soil.
Be particularly careful not to let small seed dry out in the first
10 days (until you see some green leaves). A useful technique
is to use shade cloth or hessian to keen the sun off and prevent
drying out, but make sure this is removed after the seeds have
germinated.
Seeds that can be sown successfully with the direct method
include beans, peas, lettuce, pumpkin, carrot, onions, beetroot
1. Prepare the soil to an even, crumbly texture and large flower seeds like nasturtium, Californian poppy,
sunflower etc..

2. Sow large seed evenly spaced 3. Sow small seed carefully, twice as 4. Cover the seed and gently
at final spacing deep as seed width water in

5. Thin seedlings to recommended Heronswood kitchen garden. Seed is sown directly or from pre-
spacing germinated seedlings.
56
made simple!
Indirect method
– raising seedlings to transplant later
Many seeds need to be started in punnets or pots before they
can be planted out in the garden.
Sowing using this method you can get an early start on
the season, this is especially useful if you live in a cooler
climate with shorter summers. See page 58 for our range
of propagator kits and heated trays that will guarantee your
success with seeds.
Make sure you use clean punnets or quick pots. Jiffy pellets
and jiffy pots can be planted without disturbing the roots
directly into the garden later where they will break down
over time.
Seeds that can be sown successfully using the indirect method
include slow growing tomatoes, eggplants, broccoli, onions,
celery, leeks, stevia and parsley and small flower seeds like
foxgloves, echiums, delphiniums etc.. 1. Fill your punnet or pot to the brim with seed
raising mix

2. Firm down the surface 3. Sow seeds carefully, then cover 4. Water in well
with a fine layer of seed raising mix

5. Place in a well lit position 6. Transplant when they have grown their second set of leaves
