ABSTRACT
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also known as corporate responsibility, corporate
citizenship, responsible business, sustainable responsible business (SRB), or corporate
social performance,[is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into abusiness model.
Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism whereby business
would monitor and ensure its adherence to law, ethical standards, and international norms.
Business would embrace responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment,
consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere.
Furthermore, business wouldproactively promote the public interest by encouraging community
growth and development, and voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the public sphere,
regardless of legality. Essentially, CSR is the deliberate inclusion of public interest into
corporate decision-making, and the honoring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.

The practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Proponents argue that there is a
strong business case for CSR, in that corporations benefit in multiple ways by operating with a
perspective broader and longer than their own immediate, short-term profits. Critics argue that
CSR distracts from the fundamental economic role of businesses; others argue that it is nothing
more than superficial window-dressing; others argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of
governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations.

This project report is on social activities done by shipping and logistics companies. From many
companies some are short listed whose CSR activities are noticeable and worth.

Total 10 shipping and logistics companies are included in this report.

INTRODUCTION TO CSR
DEVELOPMENT

Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also known as corporate responsibility, corporate

citizenship, responsible business, sustainable responsible business (SRB), or corporate
social performance, is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business
model. Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism
whereby business would monitor and ensure its adherence to law, ethical standards, and
international norms. Business would embrace responsibility for the impact of their
activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all
other members of the public sphere. Furthermore, business would proactively promote
the public interest by encouraging community growth and development, and voluntarily
eliminating practices that harm the public sphere, regardless of legality. Essentially, CSR
is the deliberate inclusion of public interest into corporate decision-making, and the
honoring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.

The practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Proponents argue that there
is a strong business case for CSR, in that corporations benefit in multiple ways by
operating with a perspective broader and longer than their own immediate, short-term
profits. Critics argue that CSR distracts from the fundamental economic role of
businesses; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial window-dressing; others
yet argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over
powerful multinational corporations.

Some commentators have identified a difference between the Continental European and
the Anglo-Saxon approaches to CSR. And even within Europe the discussion about CSR
is very heterogeneous.

APPROACH

An approach for CSR that is becoming more widely accepted is community-based

development projects, such as the Shell Foundation's involvement in the Flower Valley,
South Africa. Here they have set up an Early Learning Centre to help educate the
community's children, as well as develop new skills for the adults. Marks and Spencer is
also active in this community through the building of a trade network with the
community - guaranteeing regular fair trade purchases. Often alternative approaches to
this is the establishment of education facilities for adults, as well as HIV/AIDS education
programmes. The majority of these CSR projects are established in Africa. A more
common approach of CSR is through the giving of aid to local organizations and
impoverished communities in developing countries. Some organizations do not like this
approach as it does not help build on the skills of the local people, whereas community-
based development generally leads to more sustainable development.

8
POTENTIAL BUSINESS BENEFITS

The scale and nature of the benefits of CSR for an organization can vary depending on
the nature of the enterprise, and are difficult to quantify, though there is a large body of
literature exhorting business to adopt measures beyond financial ones (e.g., Deming's
Fourteen Points, balanced scorecards). Orlitzky, Schmidt, and Rynes found a correlation
between social/environmental performance and financial performance. However,
businesses may not be looking at short-run financial returns when developing their CSR
strategy.

The definition of CSR used within an organization can vary from the strict "stakeholder
impacts" definition used by many CSR advocates and will often include charitable efforts
and volunteering. CSR may be based within the human resources, business development
or public relations departments of an organisation or may be given a separate unit
reporting to the CEO or in some cases directly to the board. Some companies may
implement CSR-type values without a clearly defined team or programme.

The business case for CSR within a company will likely rest on one or more of these
arguments:

Human resources

A CSR programme can be an aid to recruitment and retention, particularly within the
competitive graduate student market. Potential recruits often ask about a firm's CSR
policy during an interview, and having a comprehensive policy can give an advantage.
CSR can also help improve the perception of a company among its staff, particularly
when staff can become involved through payroll giving, fundraising activities or
community volunteering.

Risk management

Managing risk is a central part of many corporate strategies. Reputations that take
decades to build up can be ruined in hours through incidents such as corruption scandals
or environmental accidents. These can also draw unwanted attention from regulators,
courts, governments and media. Building a genuine culture of 'doing the right thing'
within a corporation can offset these risks.

Brand differentiation

In crowded marketplaces, companies strive for a unique selling proposition that can
separate them from the competition in the minds of consumers. CSR can play a role in
building customer loyalty based on distinctive ethical values. Several major brands, such
as The Co-operative Group, The Body Shop and American Apparel are built on ethical
values. Business service organizations can benefit too from building a reputation for
integrity and best practice.

9
License to operate

Corporations are keen to avoid interference in their business through taxation or

regulations. By taking substantive voluntary steps, they can persuade governments and
the wider public that they are taking issues such as health and safety, diversity, or the
environment seriously as good corporate citizens with respect to labour standards and
impacts on the environment.

MOTIVATIONS

Corporations are motivated to adopt CSR practices by several different factors.

Ethical consumerism

The rise in popularity of ethical consumerism over the last two decades can be linked to
the rise of CSR. As global population increases, so does the pressure on limited natural
resources required to meet rising consumer demand (Grace and Cohen 2005, 147).
Industrialization in many developing countries is booming as a result of technology and
globalization. Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental and social
implications of their day-to-day consumer decisions and are beginning to make
purchasing decisions related to their environmental and ethical concerns. However, this
practice is far from consistent or universal.

Globalization and market forces

As corporations pursue growth through globalization, they have encountered new

challenges that impose limits to their growth and potential profits. Government
regulations, tariffs, environmental restrictions and varying standards of what constitutes
labour exploitation are problems that can cost organizations millions of dollars. Some
view ethical issues as simply a costly hindrance. Some companies use CSR
methodologies as a strategic tactic to gain public support for their presence in global
markets, helping them sustain a competitive advantage by using their social contributions
to provide a subconscious level of advertising. (Fry, Keim, Meiners 1986, 105) Global
competition places particular pressure on multinational corporations to examine not only
their own labour practices, but those of their entire supply chain, from a CSR perspective.

Social awareness and education

The role among corporate stakeholders to work collectively to pressure corporations is

changing. Shareholders and investors themselves, through socially responsible investing
are exerting pressure on corporations to behave responsibly. Non-governmental
organizations are also taking an increasing role, leveraging the power of the media and
the Internet to increase their scrutiny and collective activism around corporate behavior.
Through education and dialogue, the development of community in holding businesses
responsible for their actions is growing (Roux 2007).

10
The Government describes CSR as “the voluntary actions that business can take, over and
above compliance with minimum legal requirements, to address both its own competitive
interests and the interests of wider society”. For more information on the Government’s
role in CSR.

1. ASHOK LAYLAND LOGISTICS

12
About Ashok Leyland Logistics
Ashok Leyland the Indian flagship of the Hinduja group, has completed delivery of over
250 a specially designed 2516H multi axle vehicles, to VRL Logistics. This is against an
order for 600 vehicles – the largest single order received by Ashok Leyland from a
Private Sector customer. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. R Seshasayee, Managing
Director, Ashok Leyland said, “we are proud to have had VRL, one of the most
progressive logistics companies in the country, as our customer for over three decades.
The 2516H trucks have been specially designed for their specific requirements. We are
confident that, as in the past, VRL Logistics will be able to achieve better operating
efficiencies and enhanced productivity with this new addition to their fleet.”

The 2516H MAV has a high power engine that allows faster turnaround and a longer
loading span of 28 feet for higher load carrying and productivity. VRL Logistics plans to
purchase 1,000 vehicles this year, of which 800 from Ashok Leyland. Apart from 600
numbers of 2516H, 100 numbers of 12m buses and 100 numbers of Ecomet 912s will
also be inducted into the VRL fleet.

Said Mr. Vijay Sankeshwar, Chairman, VRL Logistics, “VRL has grown from being a
single truck company in 1976 to a fleet strength of more than 2,500 vehicles. We have
been able to achieve this growth not just by creatively pushing our limits to optimize our
resources, but also by challenging our suppliers to provide improved vehicles that allow
us better deployment of the fleet with minimum down time. I am happy to say that our
partners, Ashok Leyland have risen to the challenge and have met our requirements to
our greatest satisfaction.”

Apart from customizing vehicles, Ashok Leyland has been partnering with VRL
Logistics to provide driver training, maintenance support and a ‘Leyparts’ stocking
facility within the VRL premises at Hubli. Such customer centric initiatives are central to
Ashok Leyland’s way of partnering with key customers.

VRL Logistics has operations spanning industries like travel and tourism, courier and
general cargo services. With over 900 branches and 10000 employees, they are respected
for being a pioneer in the logistics industry and have several achievements to their credit.
They have been listed in the LIMCA book of records as a “Single owner operated
Transport Company to have the largest fleet of truck and buses which stands at over
2,000 numbers and presently hold over 2500 vehicles.”

Riding on the current success, VRL group has chalked out ambitious plans to diversify
into several high growth sectors.

Ashok Leyland clocked a sale of 83,101 vehicles during 2006-07 – a 35% growth over
61,655 vehicles in 2005-06.

AVIA ASHOK LEYLAND products at green event on Capitol Hill
Date:30/7/2009 Published from :Corporate Office
AVIA vehicles were seen at
the Capitol in Washington
D.C. on Tuesday, 28 July
2009.

Six full electric midi trucks,

called ‘Smith Newton’, were
handed over by Carol M.
Browner, Assistant to the
President for Energy and
Climate Change and by
Missouri Senator Kit Bond.
The keys for these vehicles
were received by the
representatives of the top US
companies Coca Cola
Enterprises, AT&T, Pacific
Gas and Electric Company,
Staples, Frito-Lay and Kansas City Power & Light in front of the Capitol.

Built on Czech-made AVIA chassis and cabs, by Tanfield UK and Smith USA, these zero emission
electric vehicles are a sign of things to come in green transportation in the wake of increased
environmental awareness and action.

For AVIA ASHOK LEYLAND MOTORS (AALM), this signals an enhanced presence in the
green transportation sector which offers high volume potential in the future. For more than 5 years,
AALM has been associated with the Tanfield Group UK for the supply of components to their
electric vehicles for the United Kingdom, Ireland and various other European countries.

Customers to benefit from excise duty cut

Date:25/2/2009 Published from :Corporate Office
In line with the excise duty reduction from 10% to 8% in respect of trucks and auto
components, Ashok Leyland will pass on the full benefit to its customers. This is despite
the fact that the inventory of vehicles with the Company -just as the rest of the
commercial vehicle manufacturers - has suffered a higher excise duty.

The impact of the duty reduction will work out, on an average, to over Rs 16, 000 per
vehicle .

15
Ashok Leyland develops Hythane engines
Date:24/3/2009 Published from :Corporate Office
New Delhi, March 24,2009: Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group flagship, has
successfully developed a 6-cylinder, 6-litre 92 kW BS-4 engine for operation with
Hythane, in association with Eden Energy, Australia.

Hythane is a blend of natural gas and hydrogen (usually 20 per cent hydrogen by
volume). Addition of Hydrogen (a renewable fuel), improves efficiency, while retaining
the low emission characteristics of CNG.

Concurrently, a 4-cylinder 4-litre 63 KW engine is being developed for H-CNG blend in

a joint R&D programme with MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) and
Indian Oil Corporation.

Application of these engines to buses is at an advanced stage at Ashok Leyland. The

Company is also in discussions with Government Agencies regarding making Hythane
available for commercial use in the future.

Ashok Leyland pioneered the use of CNG fuel for mass transportation in the country by
rolling out India’s first CNG bus in 1997 in Mumbai. Today, over 5,500 Ashok Leyland
CNG buses ply on the roads of Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada and Mumbai as also in
certain overseas markets.

Another significant development by Ashok Leyland was India’s first MPFI (Multi-Point
Fuel Injection) for high capacity CNG engine in 2008.

The Hinduja Group is an investment and banking group with a diversified global
portfolio of holdings across the manufacturing services and banking sectors. The Group,
founded by Shri P.D. Hinduja in 1914, has activities across three core areas: Investment
Banking, International Trading and Global Investments. As part of its Global
investments, the Group owns businesses in Automotive, Information Technology, Media,
Entertainment & Communications, Banking & Finance, Infrastructure, Project
Development, Chemicals & Agri business, Energy, Real Estate and Healthcare. The
Hinduja Group also supports charitable and philanthropic activities across the world
through the Hinduja Foundation.

Ashok Leyland defines CSR as: "Our commitment to

improving the quality of life of our employees, their families,
the driver and the local communities around our units, and the
society."

16
Ashok Leyland has always been socially responsible. The massive HIV/AIDS awareness
campaign covering all its employees, the driver community and the immediate
community around its units; the medical and blood donation camps it conducts in the
immediate community around its units; the green initiatives; its revenue-neutral driver
training school in Namakkal (Tamil Nadu) and Burari (near New Delhi) to train drivers
"on and off the road"; all its measures at driver welfare; its initiative at setting up and
hand-holding women self-help groups around its units to sustain themselves
economically; its road safety drive on highways around its units; its emphasis on green
supply chain management; and its research efforts at conserving resources are some of
the initiatives that are on-going.

With CSR as an integral part of Ashok Leyland's activities, all our social initiatives are
structured and focused to enhance our commitment to our employees and the stake-
holders.

With the guiding principle that all CSR initiatives in Ashok Leyland are aimed at
impacting positively, making a difference and sustaining them, all our efforts focus on
livelihood enhancement, health, education and environment.

Ashok Leyland encourages employee involvement, engaging the families of the

employees, and involving local, experienced and credible resources in all its CSR
activities.

A bus that leaves behind a trail of cheer among special ones

Fun Bus is a gift from Ashok Leyland exclusively for

free use by children of orphanages, Corporation
Primary schools and physically/mentally challenged
children for a day’s picnic.

The bus brings cheer to these children, who were

earlier confined to four walls due to lack of a suitable
transport facility. By providing a tailor-made facility in
the form of the Fun Bus, the company tries to give
these children a day to remember.

The seating layout reckons the requirements of physically challenged children. The bus is
equipped with a hydraulic lift for the convenience of wheelchair-bound children.

The facility is currently available in Chennai and New Delhi.

17
Green Mission

"We are concerned about the earth our children will

inherit. That's why we make sure our vehicles
consume less, pollute less. This concern is reflected in
the manufacturing systems, the various processes,
energy conservation measures and conscious greening
initiatives of the Company.”
In 2002, all the vehicle manufacturing units of Ashok Leyland were ISO 14001 certified
with Environmental Management System..

Over the decades, Ashok Leyland's R&D engineers have been addressing the twin
concerns of fuel-efficiency and emissions. Not surprisingly, when the legislation came in
1987, limiting vehicular emission, Ashok Leyland vehicles were already meeting them.
In 1992, came the more stringent norms for gaseous emissions. By then, Ashok Leyland,
through timely technology tie-ups - and ahead of competition - had absorbed and was
offering eco-friendly engine technology. In 1996, when the permissible levels of gaseous
exhaust emissions were further tightened, Ashok Leyland again met the norms with ease.

Ashok Leyland has pro-actively developed its engines to meet the progressive emission
norms, including the Bharat Shage II norms.

Energy Conservation

The Ennore unit was recently identified as one of the model energy-efficient units by a
CII-TNEB organised Energy Conservation (ENCON) mission. Systematic management
of all energy resources from the 1980s through better housekeeping and awareness has
made this possible. The 1980s also saw Energy Audit being introduced. Improvement in
machine tools, furnace-loading pattern, design of heating elements and an energy
efficient lighting system has all led to energy savings of 30,782 units per day.

For Ennore, practicing the 3Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle has surely paid-off.
Recently, an opinion survey conducted in the neighbourhood reveals that both industries
and the public are happy to have Ashok Leyland as their neighbour. Building on the eco-
friendly measures over the years, Ennore has received the ISO 14001 certification for
Environmental Management Systems.

The Emission Mission

To get the best out of Ashok Leyland's eco-friendly engine technology, round-the-year
awareness and action programmes are held at operators' meets and service campaigns.
Ashok Leyland has also launched a dedicated mobile emission clinic operating on
highways and at entry points to New Delhi. The clinic checks vehicles for emission
levels, recommends remedies and offers tips on maintenance and care. Even as it spreads
the emission mission, it will generate valuable data and garner insight that will guide

18
further development.

India's first CNG-run bus

In January 1997, Mumbai's taxi drivers had a complaint about a BEST bus: they couldn't
hear it coming! Not only did it make next to no noise, it also emitted very little pollutants.
What makes this bus different is the fuel that powers it. Spearheading the induction of
CNG technology in the National Capital Region, Ashok Leyland has put out over 2,500
buses on its roads.

Processes
A serious and responsible approach to protecting the environment forms one of the
abiding principles at Ashok Leyland. That's why, we strive beyond compliance with the
Law to create and implement sound environmental practices into our business decisions
and processes. A constant review of the processes has been resulting in modifications and
replacements with eco-friendly processes. Back in the 1960s, shot blasting used for
surface cleaning treatment of rough materials and heat treatment scaling at Ennore was
replaced with sand-blasting, to eliminate the hazard of lead shots. Later, sand was

19
replaced with steel shots, to eliminate the possibility of silicosis. The blasting dust from
the machines is collected by heavy-duty dust collectors and goes into the making of
firecrackers.

Sodium Cyanide was used in salt bath furnaces for carburising and hardening of
components. This involved an elaborate process of handling and disposal of residual
cyanide salts. In 1980, this was replaced by carbonitriding process. The four 'Sealed
Quench Furnaces' that do carbonitriding now operate without any Sodium Cyanide. At
the modern paint shop at Hosur II, scrubbers to avoid exposure and adverse reactions
collect the paint particles in the paint booth immediately.

Trichloroethylene and Carbon Tetrachloride - two compounds used for de-greasing at

Ennore - were eliminated once they were categorised as 'ozone depletion substances'. At
the same location, introduction of direct induction hardening has eliminated the copper
plating of camshafts before the carburising operation. From August 1999, 'green energy'
has been powering the Hosur I factory. Electricity generated by windmills is supplied to
the factory through a special agreement with the Tamilnadu Electricity Board. Why, even
cooking is eco-friendly here. The canteen runs on solar heaters and food waste becomes
fodder to cattle at a cattle farm at Mathagiri, near Hosur. In the generator room at Hosur
I, modifications to the air filter near the exhaust pipe led to reduction of noise level by 40
decibels. Test beds are made soundproof by packing sound absorbing material.

Effluent Treatment
Treating waste to produce usable by-products and safe disposal of unused waste are the
twin goals of effluent treatment plants, set up in all the Units of Ashok Leyland including
Ennore where 1.28 million liters of water is redeemed from sewage everyday. Illustrating
the efficacy of an effluent treatment plant is the one at Hosur I. One of the most modern
of its kind in the area, it has several state-of-the-art features like Mechanical Bar Screen,
a Detritor for grit removal, Flow Meter, two Aerator Tanks with surface aerators, a
Secondary Clarifier, a rare chlorination facility and sludge drying beds.

The plant can do primary, secondary and tertiary treatment operations. About 55,000
liters of effluents flow into the plant every day. Five kilograms of solid hazardous waste
is stored as per Pollution Control Board standards and the rest of the water portion is
treated and used for organic farming. Manure extracted from the sludge replaces artificial
chemical fertilizers saving Rs.165000 per annum. On an average, 250,000 liters of
recycled water is pumped into the garden saving Rs.1.5 million per annum.

Greening

20
The Ennore Unit is known for its lush green cover. Almost 10
% of the total ground area of 53.41 hectares is covered by
greenery creating an oasis in the arid zone of Ennore.

Of the 12.44 hectares of land available for tree planting,

landscaping and lawns at Hosur I, 1.44 hectares has been used
for growing 1,623 trees. A herbal garden right next to the
effluent treatment plant serves as an open lab of medicinal
herbs.Hosur II has a green belt stretching 15 hectares with nearly 4,500 trees.

Bhandara has over the years systematically developed green belt zones. A mind-boggling
179,000 trees cover 50 hectares of the 101-hectare unit. Teak, Shisham, Subabul,
Eucalyptus, Bamboo, Bori, Asoka, Neem, and Suru are among the 35 varieties that adorn
the landscape. The trees are home for a wide variety of birds, almost converting the
factory into a conservation zone.

Environmental Policy
We are committed to preserving the environment through a comprehensive
Environmental Policy and a proactive approach in planning and executing our
manufacturing and service activities. The objective of Ashok Leyland's Environmental
Policy is to adhere to all applicable environmental legislations and regulations, adopt
pollution preventive techniques in design and manufacture, conserve all resources such as
power, water etc., and optimise its usage, through scientific means, minimize waste
generation by all possible ways and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle the same through a time
bound action plan as well as provide a clean working environment to our employees,
contractors and neighbours.Towards this, we propagate our environmental policy and our
commitment to continuous improvement to all employees, suppliers, customers and
neighbours.

AIDS Awareness
In the mid-90s, the Department of International
Development, British High Commission, formed the
Truckers Interim Coordination Unit (TICU) for a
focussed programme among truck drivers. Ashok
Leyland was one of the first organisations to associate
itself by becoming an intervention centre.

In 1998, awareness and prevention programmes were

started at the Hosur factories among convoy drivers with
employee volunteerism. 56 employees from the Hosur Unit underwent trainers' training
and took turns to do counselling. The Company doctor prescribes necessary treatment
which are funded by transport contractors. By persuading medical intervention among
their expectant HIV positive wives, many innocent lives have been saved.

21
In the worker development programmes employees are covered in batches. (Almost
100% of employees are covered on awareness. Employees have been trained as 'Peer
Educators' who work as volunteers and continuously follow up employees' update on
AIDS awareness.)

Outside the factory camps, and health education programs like lectures, cycle rallies, film
shows, exhibitions, etc. are conducted through our volunteers in co-operation with AIDS
Prevention and Control Project. We also provide counseling services at our Medical
Center. Cases which require support service are sent to 'Seva Kendra' in Bangalore (an
NGO backed by Rotary - TTK), RIDS (an NGO) in Hosur, Kingsley Community Centre -
(an associate of Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation) in Krishnagiri.

We also have a Voluntary Counseling and Testing Center at Government Hospital,

Hosur, where HIV tests are conducted. The NGOs referred above also provide palliative
medicines free of cost

Driver Training Centre

Ashok Leyland's Namakkal Driver Training Centre near
Salem in Tamil Nadu was started in 1995 "to ready a
driver for life on the road and off the road". From the
very beginning, the curriculum had included, besides
functional subjects, health education including yoga and
AIDS awareness (along with the education on the vehicle
and traffic rules cum sessions on physical fitness,
personality development and health risks like smoking.
The drivers also attend awareness sessions on Sexually
Transmitted Diseases [STDs] and AIDS.)

Namakkal is virtually the heartland of trucking in South India. The Training Centre has
integrated itself well with the community, the various fleet owners associations and local
NGOs, which has enhanced its ability to create mass awareness about AIDS. Identified as
an important centre given its strategic location, the Training Centre's contribution is well
appreciated by APAC (AIDS Prevention and Control Project) and AIDS Control Society.

Over one lakh drivers, who have been trained under various courses, have been covered
under AIDS awareness sessions so far. Sessions on AIDS, which are part of the
structured training programme, are supplemented by video cassettes, leaflets and booklets
received from AIDS Control Society. NGOs also use the Centre for dispensing condoms.
Specialist NGOs regularly visit the Training Centre, to deliver talks and to present street
The Driver Training Centre at Namakkal is recognised as one of the best in the private
sector. Following the Namakkal success story, Ashok Leyland has set up a Driver
Training Institute in Burari, near Delhi, in partnership with the Government of
National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Community Service

22
We are involved in a number of development initiatives in communities around our
manufacturing facilities and in far-flung areas, through constant and well-monitored
support to educational, medical and charitable organizations.

A Community Development Scheme managed by representatives from the Management

and the Union with contribution made by both caters to the needs of the neighbouring
communities. Contributions include construction of buildings for government/private
educational institutions, providing borewells, bus shelters, streetlights and community
television sets.

Started in 1994, the Dharam Hinduja Matriculation and Higher Secondary School,
Thiruvottiyur, Chennai, is managed by a Board of Trustees consisting of senior
executives and workmen of the company. Every year, buses are donated to various
schools, mostly catering to economically backward students. Desks and benches are also
provided. The inmates of 'Missionaries of Charity' near the Ennore Unit are provided
with free food, every day.

We have also donated ambulances for worthy causes. Free medical camps are held in
neighbourhoods. Employees participate in large numbers at periodic blood donation
camps held at the Units.

LNG Tankers have a capacity of up to 140,000m3, but larger vessels with a capacity of
200,000m3 or more are under development. The design of today’s LNG tankers is
characterised by a high speed and thus high propeller loading. This requires a low overall
resistance and related good powering performance but also an excellent after body
design, with a good flow towards the propeller(s) and rudder(s), without flow separation.
Various interesting propulsion plants are possible for LNG tankers. Recent research at
MARIN included the traditional single screw, twin gondola propulsion, podded
propulsors and hybrid propulsors.
Services&Activities
The Ships Powering Department is involved in the development of the hull design, the
power optimisation and the cavitation, noise erosion observation.

The Seakeeping Department investigates the seakeeping performance in all weathers and
all sea states. Special attention is given to the sloshing loads in the tanks, which can
becomeveryhigh.

The Offshore Department investigates the offloading of LNG from a floating platform to
aLNGtanker.

The Manoeuvring Department verifies the low and high speed manoeuvrability and
controllability. Due to the recent trend, in which the fore ship becomes slender and the aft
ship full, special attention is needed on the steering capability.

The Nautical Centre MSCN offers training of the crew by simulating approach
manoeuvres on a full size bridge. But also Quantitave Safety Assessments of the nautical
operations and Real-time simulations are carried out to reduce risks to a minimum.

The Trials & Monitoring Department is involved in full-scale measurements of ship

performances, cavitation observation, pulse and loads measurements.
Facilities&Tools
LNG tankers are tested in the following MARIN facilities:

 Deep water towing tank

 Depressurised towing tank
 Seakeeping and manoeuvring basin

LNG tanker hull form Design Optimisation is performed with the aid of the following
tools:
RAPID:Calculationofwaveresistanceandpotentialflow
PARNASSOS:Calculation of the viscous flow around ships hulls
DESP: Prediction of propulsive performance

44
CSR activities conducted by LNG CARRIERS:-
1. Low-cost gas containment system

2. Reduction of waste and pollution CS1 PROPULSION

3. GREEN PASSPORTS

45
GAS CONTAINMENT

Both Gaselys and Provalys use CS1 containment, which is a low-cost gas containment
system using aspects of two older containment systems, the Mark III and NO96
membrane systems.

CS1 allows faster fitting and construction and reduces costs by about 15%. The system
also allows more operational flexibility for shipping as partial loads of LNG can be
transported (the system provides detailed sloshing analysis). The Gaselys has a carrying
capacity of 154,500m³ of LNG and is equipped to operate in arctic conditions for
operations in Snohvit (Norway).

Deliveries for Gaselys and Provalys were delayed by a year because of technical
problems with the CS1 containment system, which have now been ironed out. CS1 was
developed by Gaztransport and Technigaz and has a 40-year North Atlantic operational
lifespan.

CS1 PROPULSION

The CS1 containment system is designed to reduce natural evaporation of gas from the
ship (for safety reasons as well as reduction of waste and pollution).

Any gas that does evaporate is used by the ship's propulsion systems as Gaselys is one of
a growing number of LNG carriers that has dual fuel capability (gas and electric).

Gaselys is fitted with three 12 cylinder and one six cylinder Wartsila 50D dual-fuel
engines with a combined power output of 39.9MW. The advantages of dual-fuel
capability include the use of 'waste' gas onboard, which would otherwise be vented to the
atmosphere, reduction of engine wear and longer periods between maintenance.

The system is also more environmentally friendly with lower emissions. Dual-fuel
engines either run on boil-off gas with 1% diesel added or on pure diesel.

GREEN PASSPORTS

Gaz de France now has three dual-fuel LNG carriers – Gaz de France Energy, Provalys
and Gaselys – all of which have been awarded Green Passports by Bureau Veritas, the
ship classification society.

The Green Passport, which was awarded after an 18 month period of identifying and
minimising all hazardous materials in the construction of the ship and also minimising

46
operational and crew generated waste, will be carried by each ship over the duration of
their operational life.

68
Ikageng Shelter for Boys

A home for abandoned and orphaned boys currently houses 18 boys. Value Logistic’s
involvement with this home started in 2004 when we became aware of the dire conditions
the boys were living in. The boys were kitted out with shoes and clothing and taken on a
December seaside holiday to the South Coast which included educational visits to Ushaka
Marine world and the crocodile and snake parks.

In 2005 a complete refurbishment of the home was funded by Value which included the
upgrading and expansion of ablution blocks as well as a complete facelift of the inside
and outside of the home. IQ and aptitude tests were also funded and co-ordinated by us so
that children could be placed in appropriate learning institutions.

In September 2006 an extension of 75 square metres was added onto the shelter which
serves as a general purpose hall and has created a place where the boys can enjoy meals,
do their homework and watch television together seated for the first time. The entire
project was funded by Value Logistics.

In 2008 bicycles were purchased for all children to save them hours of walking to and
from school.

Value intends building long-term relationships with these young men, by providing
learner ships and apprenticeships, on completion of their schooling.

Ongoing support is offered as and when required.

Khanya Kyaha

A home for raped, previously prostituted and destitute girls which was established in
February 2007. They required a fridge, TV and electronic goods. These were paid for and
delivered to them by Value Logistics.

The girls of Khanya Kyaha were also beneficiaries of bicycles .

Argus Pick and pay Cycle Tour

A registered charity approached us to assist with the provision of vehicles which included
cars, busses and 1 to 4 Ton vehicles. Value decided to donate the use of these vehicles to
the Argus. The donation of the vehicles ensured that the Argus had additional funds to

69
distribute among their charities. The donations of vehicles exceeded R 250 000.00 and
was repeated in 2007 and 2008.

Annual School supplies project

Due to the huge success of this project and the overwhelming response from the
recipients it has been decided to repeat and grow this projects which was initiated and
implemented by Value Logistics.

January 2008 saw the 15 000th child benefit from the receipt of their stationery
requirements for school. The inclusion of maths sets into the packs commenced as from
January 2008.

Various charities and underprivileged schools throughout the country benefit annually
from this project.

Christmas Party for Ria Hola Preschool

A Christmas party was held for 30 children from Ria Hola preschool that takes pre-
primary children in at no charge so that their unemployed mothers can seek employment.

We took the children on an outing to the zoo, provided refreshments and gifts. Children
were chaperoned and watch on the day by volunteers from the Value sales team.
