PHOTOGRAPHY I STUDY GUIDE

STUDY NOTES FROM CLASS:

• The year that photography was present to the government of France and England as a serious
invention was 1839.
• The 4 people who are given credit for the “invention” of photography are: Joseph Niepce, Louis
Daguerre, Henry Fox Talbot, and Hippolyte Bayard.
• Dagerreotype - one of a kind, permanent positive image
• Henry Fox Talbot made the first negatives - they were reproducible paper negative prints called
calotypes.
• What affects the exposure of film? Shutter speed and the size of the aperture.
• What is the purpose of agitation? To replenish the developer that is in contact with the film/paper.
• Film has a glossy side (which faces up in the carrier) and emulsion on the other side.
• The purpose of a proof sheet is to look at the exposure, focus, contrast, and composition of the
shots you took.
• Know equivalent exposure combinations. Shutter speed + aperture

SOME TERMINOLOGY:
• Negative carrier
• Enlarger
• Easel
• Depth of field
• F stop/aperture
