What is writing?

1. Writing readiness
• Development of psychomotor skills.

• Develop the child’s knowledge of English.

• Develop ability to discriminate shapes, and


distinguish between letters.
e.g : letter of b, p, d, q.
• Develop the child’s interest in wanting to write
in English.

• Increase the ability to differentiate print and


pictures.

• Develop visual memory for shapes so that


they remember the spelling of words.
• Develop child’s larges muscles and fine
muscles to control his writing implement.
2. Early writing
• Teach pupils the mechanics and conventions
necessary for effective communicative writing.

• These includes handwriting, spelling,


punctuation and paragraphic.

• Provide meaningful contexts for learning the


mechanics of writing.
• Use people own oral compositions for giving
them in sights into writing.

• Develop pupils’ natural curiosity and thinking


skills.
3. Developmental writing
• Correct spelling is important in effective
written communication.

• Steps in teaching spelling :


i) Teaching the relationship between
common phonemes (sounds) and graphemes
(letter combination).
ii) Teaching common words for day to day
writing.

iii) Develop pupils visual memory for shapes of


words.

iv) Develop relevant dictionary skills.

v) Help pupils to remember common but


troublesome words (mnemonics).
