this stadium were Table-Tenriis and Archery, with practice
venues for Hockey and Swimming.
27th onwards we had to deal with the practicing athletes
and their ailments. The event started on 3rd October and the
athletes approached us for pre, post and inter-event
management. We had been accommodated along with
physiotherapists; this helped us to assess the conditions of
athletes with modern parameters. We could also get familiar
with the latest physio machines such as IFT with ultrasound
machine, laser, deep wave diathermy, and also kinesiology
techniques. Athletes utilised the services of both Ayurveda
massage and physiotherapy. We had a good rapport with the
physios Dr.Anitha Bharti and Dr. Ankur Mithal and had healthy
discussion on different conditions of athletes. Our duty was
divided in two shifts one from 8.30am to 2.00pm and other
from 2.00pm to 10.30pm.
During our volunteership we met with athletes, coaches and
officials of different countries. About 60 persons were treated
comprising all the categories. The team treated athletes and
officials from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, St:Vincent, Vanuatu,
Guyana, Srilanka, Australia, South Africa, StLucia, Canada,
Jamaica, and India, for different conditions such as shoulder
pain, calf muscle pain, paraspinal pain, hamstring pain, neck
pain -trapezius, scapular -rotator cuff, LBA, plantar fascitis,
cervical region stiffness pain, knee joint pain, bicepital
tendonitis, etc. The main challenge faced was that we had to
provide relief to the subjects without internal medicines and
also the results must be positive as the athletes had to
participate in the event representing their country for winning
a medal.

The techniques of ayurveda, marma chikitsa, thirumoolar
siddha marma therapy, kalari chikitsa, swedish massage,
trigger point release techniques, reflexology, muscle stretching
techniques, all of these came in to help meet the challenge.
Separate case sheet was maintained for each athlete or official.
There was an overwhelming support from the athletes as they
felt the treatment very much useful in pre, post and inter event
periods. The fact that the athletes including our Indian team
members whom we provided our service had won medals for
their respective nations made us more proud of our science.
The treatment pattern on an average provided 70% instant
and30% gradual relief to the different conditions. The treatment
was also beneficial to the athletes who were physically
challenged. The venue Medical Officer appreciated our team
of physiotherapists Shyam and Arunkumar and Doctors for
tireless and sincere efforts. We could watch some thrilling
games of Indian team winning gold medal in Table Tennis
Men's doubles event and the medal ceremony elated our spirits
of nationalism.
We were provided with certificates for our volunteership
by the CWG committee. We had made many friends in the
venue whom we remember back to miss them greatly. All other
Doctors who volunteered in other venues also had similar
encouraging experiences .
Tam thankful to Dr. Anitha Jacob , Director ISM ,Dr.Asokan
,Principal GAVC Thiruvananthapuram, for giving me an
opportunity to attend CWG New Delhi 2010 incer
Looking forward we have more to gain in the future in the
field of sports but an enthusiastic effort to develop our
techniques and to imbibe other techniques is the need of the
hour. Thus when we are ready the events will open the door.
