Greetings,
I am T. Selvaraj, Managing Trustee of the Synthika Trust.

I would like to explain myself with few lines. First of all, I am
one of the Ex-Foster Child in [KNH] sponsorship. Naturally I am
a compassionate persons and very much interested in the social
service field. During my school studies, I have great ambition to
serve among the Disabled children. After my college studies, I was successfully
completed my Post Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Management Course
[PGDRM]. I have determined in my heart to serve atleast 100 nos. of disabled
children in future. Later on I decided to start one organization for these children.
On 17.04.2006, we established our organization namely “SYNTHIKA

TRUST”. Under the Synthika Trust we are running one hostel, the name is MORIAH
HANDICAPPED HOSTEL. At present we are having 16 nos. of disabled children in
our residential programme. Apart from this programme, we are doing community
based rehabilitation programme in our surrounding villages. There are 14 disabled
children are getting basic training through our CBR Programme (ie.) Brushing,
Combing, Cleaning, Dressing, Physiotherapy exercises, etc.,
Really I am a very lucky person because God is given me a good life partner.
My wife Ms. S. Reginamary also trained person in special education. She has finished
her associated in special education A.S.Ed., Hence both we are serving among these
children with dedicated mind for the past two years. We are doing this service in full
time social workers. We expect all your help and blessings.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
"EMPOWERMENT OF PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY

HANDICAPPED CHILDREN THROUGH INTEGRATED
RESIDENTIAL HOME"
ORIGIN AND BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION :
Synthika Trust is a registered, non-profit motive and voluntary social

service organization promoted in 2006 by a band of social minded and
dedicated social workers hailing from the bottom strata of rural society and
having clear insight into socio-economic and educational status of the
downtrodden and underprivileged and deplorable and abandoned conditions of
the physically and mentally handicapped children and youth in urban slums and
remote rural areas of Manachanallur, Lalgudi and Pullambadi blocks ofTrichy
district.
Since, the inception. Synthika trust is actively involved in health

promotion and socio-economic and educational empowerment of the
handicapped children and creating awareness among the illiterate parents of the
handicapped on prevention of disability in pregnancy and after birth. Based on
the findings of the socio-economic survey in the target area and on handicapped
children, Synthika trust promoted a rehabilitation home for the handicapped by
name Moriah Integrated Home for Physically and Mentally Handicapped
Children at E.Vellanur area of Pullambadi block of Trichy district.
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF SYNTHIKA TRUST :
• To identify all type of handicapped children in the age group of 3-14 years
like blind, deaf and dumb, mentally retarded, physically handicapped,

orphan, semi orphan, normal children from the rural side and admit them in
hostel and to explain the necessity of education.
• To provide proper education to them through integrated education scheme
and education to all the normal education.
• To give more attention and give pre-school skills (Training) for 3-5 years
hearing impaired and visually impaired children.
• To encourage the children to involve them in painting work, crafts, music,
etc.,
• To identity all type of handicapped persons in community and give them
proper vocational training and promote confidence to stand on their own legs
without others help.
• To conduct public awareness programmes, eye camps, general camp for the
purpose of village people.
A DETAILED PROJECT PROPOSAL :
1) Title of the proposed project :

Empowerment of physically and mentally handicapped children through
Integrated Residential Home.
2) Location of the project :

Nesavalar Colony in E.Vellanur village of Pullambadi block.
3) No of children to be supported and nature of disability :

25 physically and mentally handicapped children.
4) Socio-Economic background of the target area and community :
Both Lalgudi and Pullambadi are situated in Lalgudi taluk of Trichy

district in the state of Tamilnadu. More than 75% of the people are small and

marginal farmers and agricultural labourers. In Lalgudi area, wetland cultivation
is undertaken with the bounty of river Cauvery while dry land agriculture is
undertaken in Pullambadi area. Since the agriculture is seasonal the farming
people are suffering a lot and struggling hard during the lean period without any
alternative sources of employment for their livelihood. Failure of monsoon rain,
unemployment, indebtedness, lack of health delivery systems, lack of quality
education to the rural children etc., are destiny of the farming community.
Gender inequality, unequal wage to the women, dowry system, alcoholism etc.,
are social evils prevailed in the rural society. Untouchability is still prevailed in
the rural society. In the rural area, the rate of literacy is low when compared to
that of district literacy rate.
Due to poverty, malnutrition, lack of health awareness, teen age marriage,

marriage in close blood relatives, lack of awareness on Reproductive and
Child Health (RCH), birth of physically and mentally handicapped children is
high in the rural society. Further, health delivery system to rural area is
ineffective due to ignorance of medical department.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT :
i. To provide rehabilitation service to the disabled children through

integrated residential home.
ii. To provide nutritious food, health care, educational support to the
target children with psychological and emotional care.
iii. To provide the mentally challenged children which special
education through well trained and experienced teachers.
iv. To promote health care of the mentally and physically handicapped
children with disability aids.

v. To bring out latent talents of the handicapped children on education and
other co-curricular activities.
vi. To support the target children to become self-reliant with self-
confidence reducing dependency on others.
SYNOPSIS OF THE PROJECT :
The abandoned, neglected and isolated situations of the physically and

mentally disabled children prompt SYNTHIKA Trust to promote an
integrated residential home for empowerment of the children providing them a
shelter, nutritious food, health care, educational support, clothing etc., with
psychological and emotional care in homely atmosphere. The proposed
residential home provides an access to the unfortunate children to grow more
and more physically, mentally and spiritually with a firm trust in Jesus Christ.
The project children will be sent to St.Louis R.C. Middle School, at Pullambadi
area of Lalgudi taluk which is 6 KM distance from the project location. Special
education will be given to the children and keen concentration will be paid
towards the mentally disabled children with cerebral palsy through a well
trained and experienced teachers. The trained helpers will take care of the
children at home.
Significantly, field workers will pay visit to each village and meet with
every family where there is handicapped children. The parents of the children
will be addressed on taking care of the handicapped children, identification of
M.R. Children, detection of rate of M.R. Children, prevention of disability of
child in pregnancy, physiotherapy care to the needy children, nutrition and other
need of the handicapped children. It will be a regular task of the field workers,
village wise, as per the fixed programme schedule. The parents will be helped to
admit their children into school as day scholars.

Thus, the home based and community based project will ensure an
empowerment of handicapped children in the target area.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT :
Most of the handicapped children hail from the socially and economically
bottom strata of the rural society.
The parents are agricultural coolies with daily wage labour class with low
literacy and or illiteracy.
Due to unemployment and poverty situation, the parents are not in a
position to provide their children even one time meal.
Most of the parents do not know where their children will get medical
care and disability aid free of cost.
The parents of M.R. Children are not aware of special schools like the
Tamilnadu Spastic Society, being in urban area.
The parents find much difficult to take care of the MR Children
physically and mentally.
Due to lack of special facilities in rural areas for M.R. Children and other
handicapped children, the children are isolated, abandoned, neglected and
considered a burden at home as well as in the society.
There is no special home or school for mentally and physically

handicapped children in Pullambadi block.
The rural parents are not aware of reasons for birth of physically and
mentally handicapped children.

The rate of handicapped children is higher than that of urban due to
various reasons that marriage in close relatives, marriage among the close blood
relatives, ignorance of ANC care and PNC care, malnutrition of pregnant
mothers etc.,
Thus, the above narrated facts and factors force Synthika Trust to
promote an Integrated Residential Home for the empowerment of the physically
and mentally handicapped children at E.Vellanur village of Pullambadi block
in Trichy district.
COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION (CBR) PROGRAMME :
Under CBR programme, 25 villages have been adopted by Synthika

Trust. Each 5 villages of Pullambadi block will be entrusted to one field
worker. Following will be duties of Field workers :
• Regular visits to villages
• Proper visit to each home
• Periodic visit lo each home
• Periodic visit to Govt. funded creches and Balwadis
• Meet with Integrated Nutrition workers
• Identify the M.R. Children and other handicapped children
• Interact with the parents to take care of their children
• Guide the parents towards district rehabilitation office for receiving
disability aids like calipers, shoes, crutches, tri-cycles, hearing aid, etc.,
• Address the rural parents on prevention of disability in pregnancy and
after birth.
• Conducting Case Review Client (CRC) meeting every Sunday at office of
Synthika Trust.

PROPOSED IMPLEMENTATION PLAN :
With 25 handicapped children, the proposed Integrated Resident Home

will be started.
Helpers and cooks will be appointed to take care of the children home.
At home, the children will be given nutritious food with balanced diet.
Required medical care like physiotherapy, speech correction etc., will be
given to the children.
Uniform clothing and other clothing, mattresses and blankets will be
given to the children.
For special education, all the children will be sent to St.Louis R.C.
Middle school, at Pullambadi.
The children will be provided with recreational facilities like TV, Audio
system, indoor and outdoor games materials, etc.,
Apart from that the children will be given physical and emotional care in
calm, pleasant and homely atmosphere.
CBR programme events will be carried out intensively in the adopted
villages by the trained field workers.
Quarterly meetings of parents will be held at trust office on further
improvement of the programme.
OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT :
Inferiority Complex will be removed from the children.

Self-Confidence of the children will be promoted.
The children will be self-reliant reducing dependency on others.
Best education will be given.
The education will pave a way for employment.
Self-security and self-esteem will be ensured.

The children will be taught about discipline, worship of God, self-control,
helping tendency, etc.,
The children will emerge as responsible citizen of the nation.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION :
Monitoring :
The project Director will monitor each and every activity of the
programme by paying direct visit to the field. Every record pertaining home and
CBR programme will be maintained properly and verified by the project
director.
Monthly review meeting of home staff and CBR staff will be held Trust
office by the project director.
Evaluation :
An evaluation of the project will be conducted by the donor agency
concerned at its own discretion. For conducting internal evaluation, a team
comprising the following members will be constituted :

ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2006 – 2007
Our Synthika Trust is a registered non-profit motive and voluntary social

welfare organization started functioning sicne 2006. Overall objective of the
trust is serving for Rehabilitation for Physically handicapped children, rural
poors, downtrodden, under priviledged and marginalized in remote area of
Pullambady and Lalgudi Blocks of Trichy District.
Synthika Trust is much pleased and proud of presenting its Annual

Report for the year 2006 – 2007, when entering the IInd year of the
effectiveness and impact of hostel activities carried out among the physically
handicapped children for their rehabilitation.
The continuous efforts and steps taken by Synthika Trust has enabled to
receive donations from the local sponsors, philanthropists and our self finance
respectively for our hostel programmes.
ACTIVITIES OF OUR SYNTHIKA TRUST

RESIDENTAL PROGRAMME
Our Synthika Trust conducting hostel for physically handicapped children

to give the rehabilitation. During the period of 2006 – 2007 undertaken by our
Synthika Trust are summarized hereunder.

FOOD FACILITIES
Our Synthika Trust provided the food for 3 times in per day as per menu
chart. We provided good nutrition food like rice, wheat, ragi, mutton or chicken,
egg, milk, vegetables and greens etc. In the evening time we provided the
eatables like sundal, Pattani, fruits and biscuits etc. Some of the donors also
provided the special meals to our children in the festival days and their birthday
functions.
MEDICAL AND MEDICINES
First Aid Medicines are available in our Hostel. We provide special care
about their health condition. If the children fall sick, we are giving the treatment
in the private hospital or government hospital. Monthly Medical check-up are
done are height and weight register are maintained in our hostel.
CLOTHING
In this year, we distributed 2 sets of uniform dresses to the children. One

of our donor Mr. George, TNSTC Driver, E. Vellanur supplied one set colour
dress for our hostel children.
SPORTS AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
We have purchased the sports materials like ringball, soundball,

caromboard, skipping, chess and cricket materials. Our children are playing in
the evening with pleasure.
Also we purchased some musical instruments like Tripple Bango,

Tamananine, Morocco’s and 14” inches drum with sticks. Our children are
practicing the musical instruments in their leisure time. Also musical
instruments are playing for morning and evening devotions.
EDUCATION
Our Hostel Children are admitted in St. Louis R.C. Middle School at
Pullambadi. We are providing the integration education with the normal
children. The school is situated 6 km away from our hostel. All the children are
going to school by bus with the help of hostel ayah. Bus fare also giving to the
children everyday by our Synthika Trust.
In this year text books and other educational materials distributed to all
the children. One of our donor Mr. Cheren, Pandiyan Chitfunds, Kallakudi
supplied the notebooks at free of cost to all the children.
Mr. Krishnamoorthy, Vessel Store, Pullambadi distributed one set of

colour dress to all the children.
Even though they are studying with normal children through integration
education, also we are giving oral and sign language classes with the help of our
Resource Teachers. The born blind children are studying by Braille Method
with the help of our Resource Teacher. Low vision children are studying by
large print method. The deaf and dumb children are studying by sign language.
The mentally retarded children are getting only basic trainings like colour
concept, combing, wear the dresses, lavatory training, making of picture, etc.

Our Synthika Trust organized the community based rehabilitation

programme for physically handicapped children. We adopted 5 villages like
Lalgudi, Anbil, Punjai Sangenthi, Peruvalanallur and Pullambadi.
Our Resource Teacher is going to every village and meet the physically
handicapped children to give the special education to them. The children are
practicing the speech correction, audiogram test, teaching colour concepts,
physiotherapy and low vision assessment through our Resource Teacher. Also
we are giving medicines during the sick times of children.
PARENTS MEETING
In this year, we conducted the parents meeting three times in our hostel
premises. We deeply explained about the activities of each children and their
qualities, educational progress, their routine works, etc. All the parents attended
the meeting with commitment and involvement. We provided eatables and
special food to all the parents children on that day.
ANNUAL DAY FUNCTION
In this year we celebrated the First Year Annual Day function dated on
22.03.2007. This function was presided over by Mr. G. Paulraj, Secretary,
“Hope of Hopeless Illam” and Mr. A. Varam Vijay Ananda Kumar,
Superintendent of Bishop Heber College Office. Also, Mr. R. Selvaraj,
Librarian, UDC College, Trichy, Mr. S. Ravichandran, P.G. Assistant, Bishop
Heber Hr. Sec. School, Trichy and Mr. S. Sam Gideon, Professor, Tamil
Department, Bishop Heber College were delivered special address on our
Annual Day Function.
We are conducting sports competition for children like running race,

roping competition, gunny bag competition, skipping competition, etc. Also our
children were provided the cultural programme like dancing, skits, mimicries
etc. Really all the children were enjoyed the day very nicely. Prizes were
distributed to all the children by the Chief Guest. The special dinner was
provided to all the participants.

sweets to our children for his son Master Prasath’s

15.8.2006 During the 15th Independence Day Mr. Subramani and Co.,
and Groups provided the special food for our children.
25.08.2006 Mr. Kumaresan, Aswan Printers, Pullambadi donated
Rs.750/- for food to our children for the birthday of his
daughter Selvi. Lakshmi.
29.08.2006 Mr. Sankar from Pullambadi donated Rs.1000/- for special
meals to our children for his son master Rahul’s birthday.
19.09.2006 One Steel Table was presented by Mr. Ravi, Ananda Store,
Lalgudi.
22.10.2006 Mr. Jesubalan & Family Coonnoor, donated one Grinder,
Mixie for our Hostel use.
23.11.2006 Mr. Edwin, Software Engineer, Senkaraiyur, Lalgudi Taluk,
donated Rs.1000/- to provide the special meals to our
children.
Synthika Trust and our children were very happy and expressed their
heartiest thanks to all the above donors for the nice help to our Moriah Hostel.
CONCLUSION
Our Synthika Trust, running the Moriah Hostel with the help of local
donors. Philanthropists, successfully completed in his year. Synthika Trust
contributed the large amount for this hostel. Once again our Synthika trust and
philanthropists for their nice help. Also our Trust thanks to our board of
members for their full cooperation for the welfare of our physically handicapped
children.
In future, our Synthika Trust Hostel Programme will be conducted with

various social programmes.
