Setup steps for the Ignite IT Pro student machine


For the student VMs you have been provided a full Hyper-V export. Also, in order to give maximum
flexibility the student files are provided in a separate ISO image. To setup a student machine you will
need to perform two steps, import the virtual machine into Hyper-V and mount the ISO image in Hyper-
V.

For the student machines no network or internet access is assumed or required.

Update PowerPoint Decks with Instructor Name and Company


Each PowerPoint deck includes a place holder on slide 2 for the instructor name and company. This text
is easily identifiable as it is highlighted in red font. Instructors should update each deck with their
information, and then change the font color to white.

Update the title slide for each presentation with the correct information, then change the font color to
white.

Requirements for host machines


Since the virtual attendee machine is 64 bit installation (required for SharePoint 2010), the host machine
has to be 64bit Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Hyper-V role have to be
enabled.

Import the virtual machine


You have been provided a folder structure with a full Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V export. Your first
step will be to import the virtual machine (VM).

1. Copy the folder structure you have been given to c:\files


2. Open Hyper-V Manager
3. Click Import Virtual Machine…
4. For import path: enter c:\files\Ignite Beta 2 12-01-09. Do not select Reuse old virtual machine
IDs.

5. Click Import

Student.iso installation instructions


Once you have imported the VM you now need to configure it to use the updated student.iso file you
received. Use the following steps to finalize the attendee machine with the latest files on the d: drive.

1. Copy student.iso to c:\files to the host machine.


2. Open Hyper-V Manager
3. Select the Ignite virtual machine (VM)
4. Right-click and select settings
5. Under IDE Controller 1 select DVD Drive. Then for Image file enter c:\files\student.iso and press
OK.

Your virtual machine now has a drive d: with the updated student files.

Windows Expiration
The current Windows license grace period will expire 1/17/2010. If your class will not be completed
before then you will need to Rearm the license.

1. Open a cmd prompt


2. Enter slmgr –rearm and press enter

Once it is completed you will need to reboot the image. It is now good for another 120 days. You
can refer to the KB linked below for additional information.
