INTRODUCTION

Career awareness is one of the most crucial factors in your life, which needs no emphasis. It
is important at least for two reasons. First, whether you opt for a career in jobs or prefer to be
on your own, you must appreciate that there is fierce competition for getting a space in the
world of work. Remember the old adage, “Survival of the fittest”. Second, in view of new
developments primarily triggered off by the information technology (IT) and globalisation of
the economy, there are now more options than ever before.

There are few issues that every student in his/ her academic lifetime has to deal with. They
are: 1. When is the right time to plan your career? 2. What factors determine the choice of
career? 3. Do these questions haunt you? & 4. Do you know about career planning? Each one
has to take these decisions is his life. For a dream career, we need- - Right Planning - Proper
Guidance - Hard work Careful Planning can result into wonders. This work begins right from
SSC/ HSC/ Graduation. It includes proper understanding of individual likings, academic
potentials, attributes, talents, personal interest, personality, value expectations, and resources
available and its utility as well as their optimum use, etc

CAREER PALNNING

Career planning should be preceded by two steps:

1.  Assess your strengths and weaknesses, likings, aptitudes and interests.

2.  Gather as much information as possible about the various educational opportunities and
choose one that conforms to your assessment.
Career After Graduation

Graduation is a watershed in one’s career as rest of the professional life of an individual is


guided by what career he/she chooses after graduation. Though a lot depends on the personal
taste and choice of an individual, there are various career options after graduation.

As there are many career options available to a graduate, he may have some confusion to
choose the right one. Career awareness can help one to choose the right path.

There are many options available for commerce students. Following are some of the current
courses available:-

Sales and Marketing

Growing consumerism has thrown up a lot of opportunities in sales and marketing. Graduates
can directly join as sales and marketing executives in several companies be it food and
beverage, manufacturing, IT or other service providers. With the development of e-commerce
telemarketing is also a good option. Here earning is very lucrative which includes salary,
allowance and also commissions.

Management

MBA is the most promising career option after graduation. It throws up jobs in the fields of
finance, personnel management, sales-marketing and international business. Graduates have
to qualify entrance test like CAT/XAT/MAT/FMS/IIFT/SNAP conducted by the concerned
institutes. Remuneration of management graduates ranges from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lac per
month or even more depending upon qualification and experiences. 

CS/ CA/ CFA/CWA

After graduation one can enter into professional courses like CS/ CA/ CFA/CWA. Such
courses are offered by several institutes in India. After completion of courses one can work in
public and private sectors bank, industries, MNCs, corporate houses, media houses and with
many more organizations. These professional are highly required in the cut throat competitive
economy thus their remuneration is very high. After some year of experience one can also
start consultancy in this field.

Law
Graduates also can start their career as a legal professional. After completion of LLB/LLM
courses they can work as lawyer or legal consultants. They also can join judicial services by
qualifying competitive exams conducted by public service commissions. They can also work
independently as a consultant in legal matter. Here remuneration is quite lucrative after
having some purposeful experiences.

Banking & Finance

Career options in banking are abundant as it is one of the fastest growing services in India.
Banking and Finance offers graduates jobs in public and private sector banks, insurance
companies and stock exchanges. The awaiting jobs for graduates in this sector includes
Probationary Officer, Clerk, Accountant, Auditor, Development Officer, insurance agent and
stock brokers. Through competitive exams one can enter into bank’s jobs.

Which Way To Go?

Choices are always good… …only if you know what to make out of them. Many career
options, various career paths and conflicting choices obscure the process of making a right
decision. So in this fast changing world, how to be sure of which one is best for you?
Therefore arises the need for career awareness.

Career Prospects
After completing course in the field of commerce, a student can join any private or
government organization as a specialist in any of the streams of commerce, such as
economics, accountancy or work as management executive, accounts executive, junior
accountant or pursue a career in auditing or banking.

2. To determine the preferences of students regarding various courses in commerce.

3. To study whether students are satisfied with their current courses.

4. To determine whether students are aware about career opportunities in abroad.

5. To study involvement of students in career exploration activities.

INFORMATION REGARDING RESEARCH

Sample size- It refers to the number of respondents that we choose to carry out our research
project. In our case the number of respondents is 50 and the respondents chosen are college
students.

Source of data- It is a primary source of data. The data was collected through
Questionnaires.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

74% of the respondents are fully aware about career opportunities in the field of commerce.

80% of the students want to go for higher studies after graduation and 20% opted for job.

The most preferred career opportunity for commerce students is accounting, finance and
banking. Insurance is the least preferred

The best course for commerce students in their opinion is MBA and Risk management
followed by PGDM, CA, CS. CFA is the least preferred.

68% of the respondents think that there are better courses and career opportunities offered by
universities abroad

68% of the total students never engaged in career exploration activities and have never
attended any workshop or lectures on career awareness.
As there are many career options available to a graduate, he may have some confusion to
choose the right one. Career awareness can help one to choose the right path. The above
survey thus throws some light on awareness among students regarding various career
opportunities and shows that 74% of the students are aware of various opportunities in the
field of commerce. Almost all the students want to go for higher studies.

There are many options available for commerce students. Following are some of the current
courses available:-Sales and Marketing, Law,CS/ CA/ CFA/CWA,Management Banking &
Finance. But the best and the most preferred among students are MBA,PGDM,CA and CS

Most of the respondents think that there are better career opportunities offered by universities
abroad.

Though 68% of the students never engaged in career exploration activities but their responses
shows that most of them are satisfied with their current courses and are aware of various
opportunities.

Students can now opt for job-oriented vocational subjects at the first degree level available in
selected colleges affiliated to many universities. Another recent development has been the
diversification of courses, professional in nature, at the first-degree level itself, although the
number is institutions offering such course is still small. International postgraduate
programmes of five-year duration after 10 + 2 in commerce are being introduced by some
universities

Whatever course you may select, you should put in your best efforts, which would surely lead
to the path of success.
