CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Two years of specialized upper secondary education make up senior high school;
A speciality may be chosen by students based on aptitude, interest, and influence.
Boyer (1987) asserts that “In taking a course, a significant decision in life is being
made. One of the four strands of study is accountancy, business, and management
(ABM). It falls within the academic track and is subject-specific. Economic,

According to Obcena (2016) , accounting fundamentals, mathematics, and
marketing and that the strand may introduce pupils to jobs in sales. Manager,
director of marketing, bookkeeper, Certified Public Accountant (CPA),
international auditor, accounting clerk, etc. Students will be able to have a greater
understanding of the outstanding Worlds of management, business, and
accounting.
Determining the factors that influence ABM Students of choosing ABM as their
strands is the primary purpose that made conduct this study. It can help us
understand to lead us to the significance of their decision on how it might influence
their rendition towards studying. These certain factors can influence the ABM
Students.

As 21st Century, students select a major that will secure their future. Some students
choose a course based on their aptitude for the subject, while others have their
parents’ approval. Yet, the majority of the time, the student’s hopes and goals play
a role in selecting the strand that will be relevant to their future job. Others choose
ABM because they want to follow in the footsteps of a family member who has
chosen a business-oriented career or because they have a family business that they
want to grow or improve. Perhaps some students choose ABM because they have
the skills to become an accountant or manager someday. The student believes that
the ABM track will help them prepare for a profession.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

ABM strand is one of the most consistently marked as the top choices of the
students for the incoming senior high students (Malonda , 2017). In the
Philippines, the number of applicants for the ABM strand is rising quickly. This
expanding phenomena results from the transformation of the Filipino lifestyle,
where we now value business acumen and rational decision-making. (Soriano
2017) indicate that most students like her wants to become an
entrepreneurship and hope to start a business of her own in future times .
(Tucker 2018) also agree with the statement it is practical to study business
because it has plenty of opportunity to acquire work immediately in this
fast growing economy of our country. ABM is the perfect course for student since
it is instantly prepares and ready them to work in and out the country.

Due to our country’s fast growing economy, it gives an opportunity to


the entrepreneurs to expand their businesses. The changing patterns of Filipino
lifestyle towards economy give diverse impact to our future career. At a moment,
student facing dilemmas in choosing the right strand. Studying business is more
appropriate at this time, as ABM strand offers a with variety of courses with nine
specialization subjects, namely: Applied Economics, Business Ethics and Social
Responsibility, Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business, and Management 1,
Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business and Management 2, Business Math,
Business Finance, Organization and Management Principles of Marketing, Work
Immersion / Research /Career Advocacy / Culminating Activity which gives
them opportunities to Accountancy, Management Accounting, Banking and
Finance, Business Administration, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource
Development Management, Hospitality Management, and Tourism (Dylan,
2018). This study provided a possible factors by influencing ABM Students in
choosing ABM Strand. Many researchers have a shared interest in the findings of
this study including the students whether a senior high and colleges students. This
research intended to visualize several factors influence in choosing ABM Strand
by the own perspective/experiences of ABM Students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM (SOP)

This study aims to determine the factors Influence Grade 11 ABM


Students in choosing the ABM as their strand in Batasan Hills National
Highschool of Quezon City.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1) What are some major comparisons in each factors presented in


choosing ABM as their strand?

2) What factors does ABM students consider when choosing ABM as


their strand?

3) What are the ABM students’ Career Aims to accomplish by


pursuing the ABM strand?
