DEDICATION
I dedicate this compilation and account of my experiences

to the following people who was always been at my back throughout

my practicum II namely: my parents; my cooperating teacher

Ms. Bernadette Paparon who had always been responsible in

guiding me to be in the right; and to our dear Professor Sheryl

Morales who

had always believed in our capacities and potentialities.

And also I send the deepest of my gratitude to my university,

my alma mater, Polytechnic University of the Philippines Quezon

City,

that will be forever in my debt for it has offered me opportunities

in the past four years of my life.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I wish to send my sincerest gratitude to the current principal of my

alma mater,

Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School Ms. Josefina T. Perlado;

to the Technology and Livelihood Education Department Head,

Engr. Edgardo Alonzo; to the rest of the observers during my final

demonstration—Mr. Victor Mendoza; Mrs. Tapales and Mrs. Epino.

PRAYERS FOR TEACHERS

Lord, Our God we thank you for the new day that you have given us.
May you bless us with enough intelligence, understanding, courage

and patience to meet the needs and expectations of our students.

We ask for your guidance to be able to teach our students with

utmost love and understanding so that we may be able to instill in

them good character and perspective in life.

We ask you these through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

INTRODUCTION

Teaching is the noblest and by far the best way to express one’s

selfless love and care for others. We all know that God our Lord had been

also a great teacher in his life as a human being and even now, that he has
come back to heave, he continues to influence us with his teachings through

the Holy Bible. Like God, teachers must also be able to influence the lives of

their students through their teachings and values.

We always hear, experience is the best teacher. And indeed, it is the

best teacher after all. I had never dreamed of being a teacher before and

never in my entire life did I ever wish to become one. But God has his plans

for each one of us and in my case; he gave me the privilege to be trained to

be a teacher. And so I said to myself, “Who am I to not embrace what he had

blessed me to have?” So, I continued with my endeavor and today, I am

about to graduate at the end of April next month.

This compilation is an account of my experiences for the past five

months of being a student teacher at my alma mater, Ramon Magsaysay

(Cubao) High School (RMCHS). I cannot say that it has always been a great

time staying there but the only thing that I can be certain is that I have

learned of myself if I can become a good teacher someday.

I have met a many people who really love teaching and who are very

dedicated in their work. I have been a student of teachers and professors

who have inspired a lot of students like me to pursue of their own goals.

May all these experiences bear good fruit in my future endeavors. God

bless us all!

HISTORY OF RAMON MAGSAYSAY (CUBAO) HIGH SCHOOL

Dedicated to Service…

… to the Youth

… to the Community

… to the Nation

The Beginnings…

In 1953 there was felt a need to expand further the then main public

secondary school in Quezon City, which, expectedly, was Quezon City High

School. This need was more strongly felt in Cubao. Thus a house owned by

the Martinez family located at P.Tuazon St. beside the Ponciano Bernardo

Elementary School was to provide shelter to the new annex school… Later

the annex school was moved to the Maria Clara Arcade, already demolished,

then situated in what was meant to be the C-Square Commercial Center

beside Cubao Elementary School.

The school was moved again to a building at the corner of Aurora Blvd.

and Highway 54, now Efifanio delos Santos Avenue or EDSA. This was in the
school year 1958-59 when finally became as independent school known as

CUBAO HIGH SCHOOL with Mrs. FANNY S. ENRIQUEZ as its first principal.

Sometime in the school year 1959-60 the school was transferred to

another rented building at New Orleans Street. It was to occupy this building

until 1972.

Expansions: Signs of Growth

Accelerated socio-economic development in Quezon City particularly

around the vicinities of the school prompted the school officials to open the

first annex of RAMON MAGSAYSAY (CUABO) HIGH SCHOOL. This was the

MURPHY ANNEX opened for the school year 1961-62 with Mrs. SOFIA A.

JAVIER as teacher-in-charge. This annex was later named Juan Sumulong

High School upon its independence in the school year 1964-65.

The school year 1962-63 saw the school opening its doors to people,

whose only available time is in the evening, for opportunities to continue

their formal high school education at night. Initially, some selected day

teachers, the more seasoned ones, handled the night classes on an

honorarium basis. Eventually, however, full-time night teachers have been

assigned.

A second annex was opened in the same school year, 1964-65. The

Hillcrest Academy, a private school situated at the corner of Judge Jimenez

St. and E. Ermin Garcia St., was acquired for the HILLCREST ANNEX. Mr.
FLORENCIO DUMLAO, then assistant to the principal was sent to take charge

of this annex. It was to be the beginning of the CARLOS P. GARCIA HIGH

SCHOOL, so renamed when it gained independence with Mrs. LUMEN G.

VELASCO as department head in-charge.

In the school year 1967-68 the P. Bernardo Annex was established.

Again, Mr. FLORENCIO DUMLAO was sent to organize the annex. The

following year it became independent retaining its name, PONCIANO

BERNARDO HIGH SCHOOL, with Mr. ERNESTO ANUNCIACION as its first

principal.

A More Appealing Identity…

On March 17, 1965 in appropriate ceremonies the school was renamed

after the late President RAMON MAGSAYSAY, endeared to the people as the

“Idol of the Masses”. The affair was made more significant by the presence

of the gracious Mrs. LUZ BANZON MAGSAYSAY, former First Lady and widow

of the late President Magsaysay and Mr. CHOW-DURRY, a Ramon Magsaysay

Foundation awardee of that year. To give the school a distinct personality,

apart from the Ramon Magsaysay High School in Manila, it was given the

official name of RAMON MAGSAYSAY (CUBAO) HIGH SCHOOL, March 17 of

every year is to be the anniversary of the school’s Foundation Day. On March

17, 1957, incidentally, President RAMON MAGSAYSAY perished in a plane

crash in Cebu.

On to a Permanent Location…
The school year 1968-69 saw a record boom in enrolment—over 5,000

students. The rented building was practically filled to the rafters. On top of

this the owner of the building, a Mrs. Ramos, was exerting pressure on the

school to leave the premises. At this time some offices were being

transferred to the new City Hall building. That paved way for the first and

second year classes to occupy the vacated rooms at the old City Hall building

which was being appropriated as the permanent site of the Ramon

Magsaysay (Cubao) High School.

Gradually, then finally in 1971-72 the school was permanently

relocated to the City Hall building. At that time Mrs. FANNY S. ENRIQUEZ was

designated assistant to the city superintendent of schools and Mrs. TRINIDAD

ESTRADA took over as principal. Before this reassignment, she was principal

of San Francisco High School now Don Mariano Marcos High School.

Changes as Agents of Progress…

On November 27, 1972 Miss AURORA B. TAGUBA replaced Mrs.

Trinidad Estrada as principal of the school. An indefatigable worker, Miss

Taguba moved with jet-like precision making representations with City Mayor

NORBERTO AMORANTO’S Office of the Department of Engineering, Quezon

City and with City Schools Superintendent CONMEMORACION M.

CONCEPCION to expedite the transfer of the division supervisors who were

then occupying the old Red Cross Building. The former offices were

converted into workshops for the Vocational classes and then the latter into
the Home Economics Building. She also expanded the canteen and the

library. More significantly, she had the grotto of Our Lady of Fatima installed

beside the Home Economics Building.

The school year 1973-74 saw another change in the helm of the

administration. This time a former classroom teacher, the Pilipino

Department head in this school in charge of Flora Ylagan High School, Mrs.

LUMEN G. VELASCO, was to return to this school as teacher in-charge. The

major changes were the relocation of the administrative and supervisory

offices, the setting-up of a Faculty cooperative Store, the landscaping of the

frontage of the school with the intention of recapturing the former lawn of

carabao grass and the constructin of an outdoor stage at the physical

education grounds along Edsa.

In accordance with the city school administration’s policy of reshuffling

principals, the school year 1977-78 brought back a former head of the Social

Studies Department of this school. On June 12, 1977 Miss SOCORRO C.

DELOS SANTOS took over from Mrs. LUMEN G. VELASCO as the fifth principal

and has stayed on to date.

Among the major changes were the structuring of mini-offices and

learning resource centers of each of the subject areas or departments. The

administrative office was relocated to the ground floor of the main building

and adjacent to it was a bigger faculty room complete with a sala set and

tables and chairs. There were also extensive beautification projects that
included a fish pond as project of the Natural Science Department. Then too,

for the first time, summer classes for students who failed in certain subjects,

were offered in this school. This provided opportunities for the students to

make up for their deficiencies and for teachers to earn a little more income.

The Big Fire…

And then on Sunday, March 15, 1981 a devastating fire gutted the

whole of the main building. Everything almost everything that was put up

through the years was gone in a matter of a few hours. Records, reports,

books, equipment, projects---they became but ashes and memories.

But life has to go on for the school. The graduation ceremonies went

on as scheduled at the Immaculate Conception Church. And we looked

forward to the promise of a new building.

But the new building took a longer time to materialize. In the

meantime the city government sought other use of the Raval Bldg., a stone’s

throw away from the school site, on a rental basis to enable the students to

go on with their schooling without unnecessary breaks or inconvenient

dislocation or dispersal.

The New Building, “Show-Window of Quezon City”…

The in March 1982 the signs of the new building were very much in

evidence. Work went on at a feverish pace so that by July 1982 we started

moving into the beautiful new building constructed at the cost of P13.6
Milion. On September 8 of the same year the school was blessed and

inaugurated with no less than the First Lady and Metro Manila Governor

Madame IMELDA ROMUALDEZ MARCOS gracing the occasion. Also in

attendance were Vice Governor ISMAEL MATHAY, City Mayor ADELINA S.

RODRIGUEZ, Minister of Education, Culture and Sports ONOFRE D. CORPUZ,

Vice Mayor STEPHEN SARINO and Schools Division Superintendent EDNA B.

AZURIN who assisted the FIRST LADY and Minister of Human Settlements

IMELDA ROMUALDEZ MARCOS in the cutting of the ribbon and the launching

of the school’s KKK project.

Rev. Fr. LIBERATO FERNANDEZ of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish

Church celebrated the thanksgiving mass and blessed the new building. The

occasion was also in observance of the birthday of the Lady of the

Immaculate Concepcion. Many parents, alumni and friends and patrons of

the school and these include the officers of the Parent-Teacher Association

were present to share in the celebration. The proceedings were covered by

mass media to include television coverage. The school is slowly but certainly

replenishing the losses in the fire and surely responding to the needs of the

times along its commitment to the education of the youth. Already the

school boasts of the first combo performers, a group of students and a group

of teachers. It has hired some out-of-school youth as school aides who

oversee the maintenance of the cleanliness of the comfort rooms, 12 units of

six for the boys and six for the girls.

The greening of the premised is a continuing project. The flowering

plants and the green patches of lawn grass are a sight to behold.

The effect of all these is for the school to be kept busy. In so short a

time the school has hosted several conferences, one on the national level,

professional meetings of principals and supervisors and of department

heads/chairmen as well. It has conducted a district echo seminar workshop in

teaching reading in English. It has welcomed visitors from all over the

country and even from foreign countries.

Like all histories which are unending, this history will pause briefly but

will carry on for posterity.

What is Preventative Computer maintenance?

Preventative maintenance means that we will perform monthly scheduled

maintenance cleaning, checks and updates on your computer to prevent
system problems instead of waiting until your computer breaks down.
Advantages of Computer Maintenance
• Data Protection:
There is a very high risk of possibly losing your data if you do not
perform preventative computer maintenance. Without maintenance,
your computer is susceptible to breakdowns.
• Saves Time:
When your computer stops working, you have to either repair it or
replace it. You will definitely be losing valuable manhours with
whichever of these options you chose.
• Saves Money:
The cost of repairing or replacing your computer can be very costly.
• Better Performance:
Monthly Preventative Maintenance will help to keep your computer in
good working condition.
Factors that can shorten a computer’s life
Excessive Heat can destroy the chips inside the computer. To avoid this,
install an adequate fan in the power supply or add an auxiliary fan. CPU,
chips, drive motors, etc. create heat. Most computers are built to work in a
temperature range of 60-85 degrees F.

Dust: Dust is everywhere and is responsible for several evils in a computer.

First, it sticks to the internal components like the circuit boards, causing
thermal insulation. The second dust evil is that it clogs spaces such as the air
intake area to the power supply or hard disk, and the space between the
floppy disk drive head and the disk.

Magnetism: Magnets can cause permanent loss of data on hard or floppy

disks. Electric motors or electromagnets produce magnetism. There are
magnets in phones that ring instead of beep, speakers, monitors, magnetic
screwdrivers, magnetic clip and paper holders, and magnets themselves. It is
best to keep anything magnetic away from computers and floppy disks too.

Stray Electromagnetism: Radiated electromagnetic interference and static

electricity can cause stray electromagnetism. Wires that are physically too
close to each other can cause radiated electromagnetic interference. This
closeness of the wires causes the transmitted signals on these wires to
become faint and jumbled. High radio frequency can also cause interference.
Sources of this are high-speed digital circuits, radio sources, cordless
telephones or keyboards, power-line intercoms and motors.

Power surges, incorrect line voltage, and power outages: Power

problems can be caused by overvoltage and undervoltage, a power blackout,
spikes and surges. Overvoltage can damage a chip because too much
voltage destroys the circuits. Undervoltage is undesirable because the power
supply will draw too much current. This heats up and destroys components.
Spikes are brief overvoltages under a millisecond in length, and surges are
overvoltages from a millisecond to seconds. To prevent some of these
conditions use surge protectors, surge suppressors and spike isolators. Also
make sure computers have a proper ground. Power conditioners are
available to boost up undervoltage so that your computer can continue to
work through brownouts. Backup power supplies, called Standby Power
Supplies (SPS) and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are available. These
provide computers with added power after a blackout has occurred.ces,
cordless telephones or keyboards, power-line intercoms and motors.

Water and corrosive agents: Liquids can be very hazardous to the

computer's health. These are caused by operator spills, leaks and flooding.
Certainly operators spills can be controlled by not having liquids near the
computer. However, leaks and flooding are not always preventable.
Corrosion of computer components can be caused by sweat in skin oils.
Carbonated liquids contain carbonic acids and coffee or tea contains tannic
acids, which both lead to corrosion. Cleaning fluids also contain ingredients
that can cause corrosion. It is best to be cautious when using any sprays or
liquids around computers.

How to Run Defrag (Disk Defragmenter)

Your hard drive is like a book with thousands of pages. Every time your
computer writes a file to the hard drive, it starts writing at the first "page."
As files of different sizes are deleted and written, when your computer writes
a file, it may use a few pages here, then skip forward to the next empty
page, then skip forward to the next empty page after that. This process of
breaking files into pieces of files is called disk fragmentation. When your disk
is heavily fragmented, it's more prone to errors and will actually cause your
system to run a little slower. Defragmenters move around these pieces of
files until they all line up. Running a defragmenter every month or so is good
system maintenance, especially if your hard drive is almost full.
If you have Windows 95:
1. Go to the Start button.
2. Go to the Programs folder.
3. Go to the Accessories folder.
4. Go to the System Tools folder.
5. Click on Disk Defragmenter. Choose the hard drive you want to
defragment, then follow the onscreen instructions.
If you have Windows 3.1x:
1. Close Windows and go to the DOS prompt.
2. Type DEFRAG and hit <Enter>. (If you see the response "Bad
command or file name," you may be running an earlier version of
DOS without built-in Defragmenter. You'll need a third-party
program, such as Norton Utilities, to defragment your drive.)
3. In Defrag, choose the drive you want to defragment ("optimize").
Click OK.
4. After Defrag checks your system, click the Optimize button.
How to run ScanDisk
ScanDisk is a free utility provided by Microsoft with certain versions of MS-
DOS and with Windows 95. It's a good idea to run ScanDisk about once a
month for preventive maintenance, and it should always be a first check
whenever your system starts showing any unusual behaviors.
If you have Windows 95:
1. Go to the Start button.
2. Go to the Programs folder.
3. Go to the Accessories folder.
4. Go to the System Tools folder.
5. Click on ScanDisk.
6. In ScanDisk, make sure all of your hard drives are highlighted. Select
Standard for type of test, and check the box next to Automatically Fix
Errors. Then click the Start button.
If you have Windows 3.1x:
1. Close Windows and go to the DOS prompt.
2. Type SCANDISK and hit <Enter>.
3. If you see the message "Bad command or file name," then type
CHKDSK /F and hit <Enter>.
4. If ScanDisk reports problems, let it fix them. We recommend that you
Delete file fragments and Skip Undo.
5. When you are asked to perform a surface scan, you may say No if you
don't want to spend the time at the moment. (Running a surface scan
once every couple of months is a good maintenance procedure.)
If ScanDisk reports errors, try deleting the malfunctioning program from your
hard drive and reinstalling it from the original disk.
Ensuring that data is backed up on a regular basis can offer peace of mind
should a disaster occur.
Three common ways to achieve this are:
1) Using an external Hard Drive,
2) USB memory sticks,
3) Online back up solution.
Large capacity external hard drives are relatively inexpensive and often
come with their own software to enable you to choose what to back up and
when to do this. Alternately, you can use windows back up on a PC or Time
Machine on a Mac to select files and schedule back ups to the external drive.
The disadvantages are that external drives can fail, or can be stolen.
USB memory sticks can be used in much the same way as external hard
drives, or you can just drag and drop selected files to the memory stick.

Online back up is a service offered which, providing you have an internet
connection enables files to be stored on a secure server and accessed via a
web browser using a unique username and password. All you have to do is
select what files or folders you want to back up and while online any changes
to those selected files and folders will be stored in a secure location. The
advantage of this is that using your own unique username and password files
can be accessed or restored to any computer anywhere that has an internet

LEARNING APPROACHES

Creating space for legitimate participation of youth in

Education for Sustainability (ES) through service learning:

Toward a "liberatory praxis" for Pedagogy of Sustainability

(PS)

Dr Allan B de Guzman

Philippines (NASSPHIL)

“The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in

the academy. For years, it has been a place where education

has been undermined by teachers and students alike who seek

to use it as a platform for opportunistic concerns rather than as

a place to learn” (Hooks, 1994, p.12)

ABSTRACT
While previous scientific and empirical discourses dwelt on the

mainstream economic analysis of sustainable development as a

global concern, this paper attempted to make use of the

changing landscape of education through its service learning

component as an exploratory and explanatory lens in

identifying possible spaces for concrete action identification.

This study, initiated by the National Association of Secondary

Schools Association of the Philippines (NASSPhil), views the

complementary role of sustainable development and service

learning as means in pedagogising today’s pedagogy for

sustainability.

Central to this study is the advocacy of the advancement of a

kind of rootedness on and connectednes of the learner and

his learning to the community which is not a detached element

in understanding and addressing community life and concerns.

Capitalizing on the combined powers of quantitative and

qualitative approaches to research, the identified attitudes

(empowering, enthusiastic, engaging and essential) and the

proposed service learning offerings of student participants

(n=223), representing the Western Visayas Region, legitimized

the role of the learner as a change agent and active player in

sustainable development through service learning. Such

legitimized role gives premium to the reciprocal relationship

between student centrality and community instrumentality in

developing an authentic way of knowing (cognitive), an

experiential way of doing (conative) and a more reflective way

of responding (affective).

WEEKLY NARRATIVE REPORT

FIRST WEEK

November 8, 9 and 10, 2010

“MY LUCKY DAY”

November 8. This is the day I planned to go to Ramon Magsaysay

(Cubao) High School and try my luck if I could get in there. And so, today,

when I arrived at my Alma Mater, I went to the principal’s office. I somehow

waited for a while to take my turn to talk to the school principal for there are

a few people waiting in line. Then, when my turn came, I greeted the
principal a good morning and then she let me in. I told her that I was hoping

that I could take my practicum II in that school and that I was from

Polytechnic University of the Philippines. I’ll make my story short… I told her

that I was also a graduate of RMCHS way back 2007. And she said, “Oh”.

Then she asked me, about how many hours are required for you to take your

practicum? I told her, a hundred and ten, ma’am. She did not even asked me

for a memorandum of agreement. Then without hesitation, after signing my

endorsement letter she directed me to the English Department Head who is

Mrs. Carmen, the one in-charge in assigning student teachers for the

respective department that they should be in. We talked for a while and after

her hearing me that I was also from the same school before, she readily

directed me to the TLE Head, Mr. Alonzo. In Mr. Alonzo’s office, he asked me

as to what subject would I be so interested to teach. And so, I was saying,

that I would prefer to teach any subject as long as it is a half-day shift. Then

he mentioned to me all the other subject areas of TLE that is offered in his

school. Then he realized that the only subject that matches my major is

computer subjects. After that, he then called for the teacher who teaches

computer who is Mrs. Bernadette Paparon. I don’t actually know her name,

but I see her around the school premises when I was still in high school. So

right away, she led me to her classroom and introduced me to her students,

and I found out that the students that I will teach are the scholars of that

school. I was shocked. I was really shocked! I never knew that I will be able

to start right away today. I did not bring anything with me. Not even a
notebook! After Mrs. Paparon introduced me to the class she briefed me

about what I would be doing for the days to come and she told me the

classes that I would be handling and that what I would be teaching soon. I

would be teaching first year and second year classes of the ESEP curriculum.

I met two classes today, I-Galileo and II-Mendel. I am quite fortunate because

what I would be teaching is MS Excel and Adobe Photoshop and we have the

facilities, plus the classroom is air-conditioned.

November 9 and 10. Mrs. Paparon gave me a key duplicate for the

classroom. She really is giving me a responsibility and I like it . These two days

are basically pure observation. What I did was to direct the students clean

the room, wipe the computers, the computer table, mop the floor, clean the

board, sweep the floor, etc. these are one of the things that I would be doing

from now on. I was told that the classroom must be cleaned by the cleaners

for the day every time they get inside the classroom and before they leave. I

left at 3:30 in the afternoon and ma’am said that for the mean time I should

not stay behind unless we have lots of work to do. It was a fine day after all,

although I find it boring just watching her teach in front. She told me that by

the following week, she will let me teach in front so that I would be able to

try it and find my own style of teaching. I was feeling nervous when she said

that and I also readily told her that I might not be able to teach well at the

first time and she answered that it is totally normal and she would stay at

the back to guide me. Then I said to myself that, “That’s good. What a
relief”. I was also advised to prepare my lesson plan. And that’s for this

week!

SECOND WEEK

November 15, 17, 18 and 19, 2010

Observation, Nervousness and Fear of Teaching High

School Students…

But Learning After All!

I still was observing my cooperating teacher how she handles herself in

front. How she talks to her students. How she disciplines them. How she asks

them queries and vice versa. I was thinking… what will I be in front of them?

Sitting at the back and observing students of high school… they are very

different from college students. I started comparing for I took my first

practicum inside the campus of Polytechnic University of the Philippines. I

was saying to myself, “These high school students would be very hard to

teach, to instruct, rather than my students last semester”. College students

are easier to talk to because they can reason well by themselves. High

school students ask questions because they want to be sure for themselves.

They ask even the smallest of things. The simplest queries… they even pay

attention to what you look like to the last of the details! I know that. I

understand them. I used be like them before. And that is why I was extra

careful with how I carry myself and with the way I speak.
I observed that the noisiest of all my classes is II-Mendel. They are very

active… in making noise. Mrs. Paparon have reprimanded them a couple of

times in our one hour of class. In her anger, she told them that they have no

difference with that of the last section. They were of course embarrassed by

themselves, so they kept quiet. Ma’am asked them, “What would Ms. Wee

write on her narrative report? That the students of the ESEP curriculum in

Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) cannot be tamed? Do you want her to put it in

her report?” I felt bad for the students but it was their fault after all. I

handled two classes last Wednesday. I was not so satisfied with my day

today. I feel like I have missed something. But I cannot expect to be

comfortable with my new students right away. And it is my first time to face

high school students. I have had one bad experience with my students this

week. They were making fun while I’m standing in the front demonstrating

our topic. I was half -leaning at the computer table and whenever I look at

them, because they are at my back they are laughing. After our class, after

everybody has gone out, three of my students came back and told me that

their classmates were acting as if we are making out and most of their

classmates are laughing about it. After knowing that, I cannot help but get

angry. I promised myself, that when they get back next meeting, they will

feel my disappointment and anger, but of course I have nothing personal

against them. I just dislike how they behaved. I am a student teacher and

they did not respect me. Just to think that they are only on their first year! I

really hate what they did. I cannot have peace inside me. So when I had the
chance to reprimand them and tell them how disappointed and angry I am to

them (I spoke in general), they were all quiet. But after that, we go on our

discussion just as the way we do it every day. But just like I told them, I

cannot be the same person they see in front before. And thank God, they

have conscience. My students who were found guilty went back to our

classroom in the time of their recess and they all apologized and explained. I

told them that they should no longer explain and what I need them to know

is that what they did is unacceptable and unethical. I also told them that I

have nothing personal against them. It is just that I can’t be happy with their

class if they have not even apologized. So there, they said sorry and thanked

me. And I was satisfied and now at peace with myself. For the next two days,

we had our laboratory activity and it was really tiring. It was my first time to

check their works and it really is tiring to go around the classroom and

interview them and check their outputs one by one! But it was still a good

week after all.

THIRD WEEK November 22 to 26, 2010

The day I realized I Hate Eating ALONE…

Oh, I just noticed now that I have not mentioned in this report what my

SCHEDULE is. My class is every day. That is from Monday to Friday, from

8:30 a.m. to 3:30 in the afternoon, meaning to say, that my lunch is moved

to 10:30 a.m. from 12 noon. Oh! Just how I hate eating alone! I don’t like

eating in the school canteen for male high school students only seat in front
of me while they giggle! Oh! Just oh! So today (November 17, 2010), I asked

my cooperating teacher, if I can just eat lunch inside the classroom, then she

said okay. She even offered me to eat in the TLE center, but I just can’t get

comfortable eating there, because the other teachers are really old except

for my cooperating teacher, because she is still quite young. So from then

on, I just bring my food in the classroom and eat there, still eating alone, but

at least, no funny faces are watching me eat my food. It is hard to eat alone.

I can barely taste my food. But I have to bear with my schedule. I know I’ll

get used to this.

For this week, we had two days for discussion and another two days for

laboratory activity. I was told by Mrs. Paparon that that would be our

schedule of activities from now on. So she asked me to create a laboratory

activity for the second year students. It is quite easy. I just created

procedures in which the students will follow and then after creating a layout

using paint and photoshop, I will do a short interview and it there is a

criterion for them to be graded. The title of the activity is Acquiring Images

that is in relation with our past two days discussion about opening and

saving files and working with images. This is the week where I started to do

overtime. There are lots of activities to accomplish! And since the computer

ratio is 4:1, the students had to take turns to work with their activities. For

the next two days, we continued our discussion of our lessons in the first

year and in the second year we carried on with our laboratory activity. II-

Aristotle came back later in the afternoon to make-up for their laboratory
activities. This is my first time to have stayed in school up to five in the

afternoon! It was really tiring but it was a fun week after all. Good thing that

the weekend is coming up in a couple of hours! 

FOURTH WEEK

November 30 to December 2 and 3, 2010

Students Can Sometimes Mess with Your Files

We have had laboratory activities this week in continuation with the

other week for II-Darwin and II-Mendel. Somebody has encountered a

problem for one of my students who works in station six cannot find her file

in drive D. So I checked and I relayed to my cooperating teacher that indeed,

her file, their file-for all those students who works and save their outputs in

station six are gone! And so she looked one by one of all those files saved in

the computer. She found their files in the file name “Steelix”. When Ms.

Paparon knew that the file was renamed she got angry and reprimanded the

students not to change anything with the computers they are using because
it is not theirs. True enough. And so from that day up to the next couple of

days, she was reprimanding all of the students from all sections not to

change anything again with each of the computers. I told my other second

year students about what I have learned and they told me that the one code

named steelix is one of the students of II-Aristotle. I told her that and asked

her why she changed the file name. She said that she did not change

anything at all. I was not sure if she is denying or she’s plainly saying the

truth. I told that to Mrs. Paparon but still, she reprimanded the entire class

and not by pin pointing who did what. That’s a good thing. No more incidents

like that had happened again and again, that is good.

Those files are important to us for it is our basis for their performance

test. If they get lost, it would be hard for us to compute for the students

grades. We mostly had discussions this week and in the afternoon, we had

make-up laboratory sessions in order for the students to catch up with our

coming lessons and activities to come.

FIFTH WEEK

December 6 to 9, 2010

A Week Full of Overtime

I mostly hate Mondays… aside from it being the start of the week and

you having a bit of a hang-over from the weekend, it is a day of full load. I

meet all of my students every Monday except for II- Aristotle. My shift during
Monday is from 8:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon straight with

no other breaks except for my lunch break. We mostly had discussions that

day since it is the start of the week. I went out of the school at 4pm because

I don’t have enough energy anymore. Some of my students came to me and

ask me if they can work on their laboratory activities later in the afternoon. I

told them to make-up for their activities from Tuesday to Friday. I was really

tired… both in mind, in body and at heart. I had a big fight with someone

special. But at least he apologized and at I had felt peace within me again.

Janice de Belen was at Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) last December 7. I

think it has something to do with her show at Net 25 entitled Spoon. I did not

stay at the quadrangle to watch. I waited in the classroom for students might

come back. The program ended at 10 a.m. in the morning so we resumed

classes at 11:30. I stayed until 5:20 this Tuesday. It was quite tiring but I

know I had to bear this so that we can go on with our lesson plan. I was the

one who encoded the Unit Test for both year levels. They would have their

unit tests by Friday. We carried on with our last two discussions for

Wednesday and Thursday so that students can go on with their Unit test by

Friday. I stay in school up to past five in the afternoon to let the students

finish their outputs. The results of the exam were quite good, except for a

couple of students who have found the exam hard. Most of them had

difficulty for they were absent, or have missed the lecture for some school

activity.
SIXTH WEEK

December 13 to 16, 2010

PANICKING ME!!!

Oh no! The vacation is coming soon. We still have a lot of activities to

finish. Not everybody is done doing their laboratory activity. I am panicking.

What if we don’t get to finish our lessons? I and my students mostly deal

with the laboratory activities this week. I still stay until five in the afternoon…

doing overtime just to make time for them to finish their work. Phew! What a

week! You know what’s so tiring about supervising and checking the works of

the students? It is because you deal with energetic, noisy and students who

keep asking questions as if they do not understand what they are doing. And

you keep moving and walking around and checking their works one by one. I

don’t think I said that because I am tired or if I actually mean it.

When I talked to my cooperating teacher later in the afternoon, she

said that I should not worry and we will be able to finish our activities before

the vacation starts or if anything worse happens, we can continue it by the

following year. I don’t know I just do not want to have any more pending

activities and discussions to deal with. But I cannot just follow my own idea.

Everybody is getting ready for Christmas events. I should calm down now.

We can finish everything. We can finish everything on time.

I still came to school on the day of my birthday, December 16, 2010.

Nobody else knows that that day is my birthday except for Ms. Paparon, my

coordinating teacher for I gave her pasta in celebration of my birthday. I did

not stay for long for the students who said that they will come right after

their Christmas party to make-up for their activities never came. I did not

expect for anyone to come except for my two students who are going to take

the unit test. They were absent the last time we had the exam. Only one of

the two students who did not get to take the unit test was able to come.

Anyway, it was their Christmas Party after all! 

SEVENTH WEEK

January 3 to 6, 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

It is the first Monday of the year!!!  I only had two classes who came

to school. Both sections are from the first year level of 1-Galileo and 1-

Newton. I hope you would not mind if I share a bit of my celebration during

the holidays! I had and exciting and very busy and happy Christmas and New

Year. I stayed with my family and we mostly go out together with which we

can barely do on a regular day. We eat out. Buy some new stuff and eat a

lot! Yahoo!  It was awesome and was the happiest Christmas I have ever

had with my family.

Let’s get back to what this report should really contain. Well, on the

first Monday of the year, I had been given advice by my cooperating teacher

to how I can improve my lesson plan. And so I did. The following day, I

presented to her my newly improved lesson plan and she said I did it just

right. She complimented me that I have a lot of improvement in doing my

lesson plan. My cooperating teacher told me, that I now know how to teach.

“Gamay ko na daw” teaching. And so, that’s great! Mrs. Paparon was absent

this Tuesday for her stomach is sick. I somehow came in fifteen minutes late

and my students for my first period did not attend my class. I was

disappointed both with myself and them. I will avoid being late ever again.

I told ma’am and ask for her permission if I can absent on Friday. I had

to go to an important meeting. It really is important that I could not avoid not

attending it. We finished reporting this week and II-Mendel is really

disappointing. Nobody was prepared for their report even though they were

granted last year that they can continue their report during this year. But

being me, I gave them another chance. But I was really angry with them.

Really, really angry. By the following day, Ms. Paparon did the same thing.

She also reprimanded these tardy students of II-Mendel. I don’t understand

what is happening to them.

THIRTEENTH WEEK
February 14 to 18, 2011

Preparation for the Final Demonstration!

I cannot believe that I did not feel the pressure of the final

demonstration until there were only a couple of hours left before the day of

my demonstration. I prepared my detailed lesson plan the other week for I

was instructed to do just that so that I can be able to submit my report to the

master teachers and for them to be able to check it. Although I prepared my

lesson plan the other week, my demonstration still falls on a regular day—

meaning it was the same lesson that we are supposed to discuss on February

16. Mrs. Paparon and I both hate the idea of a practiced lesson and that is

why I like her  Last Tuesday, I was informed that my lesson plan is too

detailed and we figured out that we should not make it too detailed at all.

Mrs. Tapales, a master teacher of the TLE Department checked my lesson

plan and we were told that maybe what Mr. Mendoza means is that the only

detailed part should be the lesson proper. And so I edited my work and I was

very lucky because Mrs. Paparon is there to guide me. Aside from me being

an only student from the PUP-QC my friends are on the other building and we

have different schedules. So although we see each other sometimes, we

cannot afford to talk for long and discuss things. I’m just glad that my

cooperating teacher is kind enough to do such a thing.

On the day of my demonstration, ma’am as well as the students

helped us in cleaning and preparing the classroom for the demonstration. I

was fixing my papers, and ma’am was also helping me, by the time before

lunch I told her to eat ahead of me, for I was still doing some things. She said

she could not eat unless we finish with our activity today! She really is

something isn’t she? She helped me all throughout the day by morally

supporting me. I thought I was going to be a disaster but luckily, as I get

challenged the more I fight off the consciousness and timidity and there, I

was saved by the fear of humiliation! By the time that the master teachers

came, I was asked if I have the other form for evaluation and I did not have it

so I looked for some student teachers that might have a copy of it. When I

can’t find any, Mr. Mendoza told me to get a copy from his office. So I did

and I was really sweaty all over when I went back to the classroom. When I

came to class, we proceeded with our class right after a couple of deep

breaths—as instructed by my cooperating teacher. I tried my best in doing

my teaching as normal as it can be since I am very comfortable with my

class which is the class of II-Darwin. This class is naturally easy to talk to and

when you give them instructions, they follow it with enthusiasm. And so I did

not have much problem with them since they belong to the highest section.

And then the class came to an end…I was waiting for the feedback of three

master teachers who evaluated me.

Alright so here are the good points: I was told that I was a great

teacher, I only have minimal wrong grammar due to nervousness, and yes

they all agreed that I was able to deliver my lesson in a good way. The bad

points are: there is a bit of a thing that I lack in making my lesson plan about
its organization, because I misplaced the application; I did not do a return

demonstration and I should have elaborated my powerpoint presentation

because it cannot be clearly read at the back. I am glad that at least I was

able to get through my demonstration. I was even told that “sana dumami pa

lahi ko”. Haha. That is much of a compliment and I am thankful for all of the

people involved in my practicum II because aside from them being

responsible, they are all too concerned for me, for all of us who are in

student teaching—I am especially thankful for my cooperating teacher, Mrs.

Bernadette D. Paparon who were never really tired in answering my queries

about teaching, about lesson plan and by never letting me feel like I was

never part of her class. After my final demonstration, we did not have any

class any longer for it had eaten the time for our last class. We were then

able to eat our lunch well and right!

FOURTEENTH WEEK February 21 to 26, 2011

For this week, we’ve had lectures and one laboratory activity for the

first year and lectures and a graded recitation for the second year. Last

Monday, I gave out a quiz for all of the first year students. As usual, some

found it hard to answer and some of them found it very easy. For the second

year class, we have had a graded recitation about identifying the different

parts of the motherboard and the system case. The students had a difficult

time in answering the recitation for they have to identify each numbered

item from the motherboard and the system case for they had barely a time

to review for they are having too many activities in school for both academic
and non-academic matters. Also, some of them had forgotten to take note of

the graded recitation today. By the following day, I had to get through alone

the last three classes for Mrs. Paparon, had to accompany our representative

for the PLDT My DSL Quiz which is Jhessa, a student from the class of II-

Mendel which is held at Shopwise Cubao.

I feel quite satisfied with myself today. I was in a good mood, although

I barely had any sleep, and I was very prepared for my lessons for today. And

I am very proud because I was able to add some new information for the

class today. By the end of the week, I barely had classes because the first

year had a practice for their field demonstration whilst the second year

students have had the review for their NAT examination. I only had a class

with I-Galileo today—the only class whose schedule is not affected by their

practice for their dance and we also had a laboratory activity this Friday. We

also had our laboratory activities about cleaning the computer monitor and

mouse for the second year for the class of II-Mendel last Wednesday.

FIFTEENTH WEEK February 28 to March 4, 2011

On the first day of the week, we had our first unit test for the first year

level and we continued with the reporting on the second year level. By the

following day, we have had reporting for both year levels and we checked

the notebooks of the second year students which will serve as their pass to

be able to take the test. As usual, there are only a few students who are

prepared with their notebooks in II-Mendel. By Wednesday, both II-Mendel

and II-Darwin took the first unit test and only a half of the class of II-Mendel

were able to take the test for they have not presented a complete set of

notes in their notebooks. Most of them are going to attend some other time

as long as they are prepared with their notebooks. On the other hand, I have

not encountered any problems with II-Darwin whilst the class of II-Aristotle is

a bit behind schedule in terms of the pacing of our lectures; they have had

two meetings for this day. On their usual schedule, they had reporting, and

later in the afternoon at three thirty, they have had a make-up class for

cleaning the computer mouse and monitor. They all did well with the

cleaning so I gave them high grades  The students of I-Archimedes were

also very eager in making up for the activities they have both missed and

have not taken yet.

SIXTEENTH WEEK March 7 to 11, 2011

I was absent last Thursday for our school activity in our university and

by this week, I was back again in the high school we continued with the

discussion about troubleshooting in the second year and working with

objects and using word art for the first year classes. By the following day, we

had lectures in second year, about computer viruses and laboratory classes

with the first year students. By Wednesday, we were supposed to discuss

about error messages that can be encountered in both the computer and the

internet—but we were not able to continue with our classes in the afternoon

for the school had a mass…we all forgot that that day is Ash Wednesday!
Thursday is the day of the National Achievement Test so we did not

have any classes. I asked for Mrs. Paparon if I can record the quizzes of the

second year students in the comfort of my home for I also have to do my

requirements in school. By Friday, as usual, I was only supposed to meet one

class which is I-Galileo. Although the second year students are supposed to

have their classes on Fridays again starting from today, they chose to be

absent so that they can take a break from all the stress they have had during

the NAT.

SEVENTEENTH WEEK March 14 to 17

Preparation for the Foundation Week 

Since I was also a graduate of Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School,

I understand just how busy the students and teachers of the school can be

during some days before the day of the foundation day. When I was in high

school, I thought we barely do anything during the month of March, but it

was only today that I realize that the teachers are too busy completing and

computing our grades. In my first semester, I did not experience being busy

like this because I student teach in-campus, meaning to say I taught my co-

students on their first year and second year.

Outside the classroom are different contests—academic and non-

academic, different year levels of students who are practicing for the field

demonstration, a book fair and some other activities that the students are

required to do to for the completion of their grades. This Monday, I and Mrs.
Paparon gave out unit tests for both first year and second year and II-

Aristotle was a little left behind for their classes start on a Tuesday. They

took their unit test this Wednesday for on Tuesday the students did not have

classes due to the M-tap. So they are about to take their post-test on Friday

together with I-Archimedes and I-Galileo. The periodical test is on the 22nd

and we are hurrying up to assist the students in completing their laboratory

activities and requirements for ma’am to be able to pass the grade sheets on

the 22nd. Ironic isn’t it? The examinations are on the 22nd but the day that the

teachers are required to pass the grades are on the same day. Well, that’s

because grades are needed for ranking and for sectioning of each student for

the next school year.

Today we are still letting the students to complete for their laboratory

activities and requirements and we are giving them time until the 21st day of

this month.

EIGHTEENTH WEEK

This week is the week of completing the requirements, computing of

the grades of the students and also the week for the periodical examination

 I also have requirements to submit so, I guess this is the end of my entry

for this journal. All in all, I have had a good experience and I also have

realized the joy of teaching and I also now know the hardships that my

teachers have encountered and are still experiencing today… although

teaching could be hard, the feeling of fulfillment is incomparable and being a

teacher is really a noble thing to do. Teachers should be treasured… forever!

I would also like to commend all the people who have been responsible in

the vicinity of my alma mater RAMON MAGSAYSAY (CUBAO) HIGH SCHOOL

who have always been there to guide me to be a responsible student

teacher. God bless us all!

CURRENT ISSUES IN EDUCATION

FOREIGN ISSUES IN EDUCATION

Current Issues in Education Today

Throughout our nation, public education today is failing our children at every

level, from kindergarten to college. Test scores are lower than that of many

other industrialized countries. Violence erupts at a moments notice. Drugs

are pervasive. Children can't read or write when they graduate. Students are

not motivated to learn. They are not accountable for their actions. What went

wrong? Our education system used to be the best in the world!

The problem stems from 30+ years of liberal, iron-fisted rule over our

education system. During that time, many tried and true foundational

principles and teaching techniques used for over 200 years that made this

country great have been erased. Our educational system has been led down

an unproven and harmful path of liberal indoctrination from which it will take

at least a generation to recover. There are many problems this politically-

correct agenda has caused, including feel-good classes where children learn

little or nothing; lowered standards of excellence; social promotions of

students from grade to grade even when they don't pass and can't read or
write; lack of student discipline; little or no respect for teachers; situational

morality; no standard of right and wrong; condoms given to children in

schools; unmotivated students; etc.

The list of failed practices and resulting consequences goes on and on. This

has been one big experiment for the last 30 years, and the education

establishment and the National Education Association (NEA) has reaped what

it has sown.

Children are the prize to the winners of the cultural war. Those who control

what young people are taught and what they experience will determine the

future course for this nation. The last few decades have clearly shown how

the predominant value system of an entire culture can be overhauled by

those with unlimited access to children.

Abraham Lincoln said, "The philosophy of the school room in one generation

will be the philosophy of the government in the next." We see that today,

and it will only get worse until our education system is wrested from the

liberal establishment so that we can get it back on the right track for our

children. The purpose of education is to prepare our children to succeed in

life, and we are failing miserably. Their future, and ultimately our country's

future, depends on how well and how quickly we remove our failing school

system from the incompetence of liberals who have taken a generation

captive. (http://www.truenews.org)

Controversial Education Issues

Education is a wonderful thing in that it can provide a bright future for the

masses. It brings people of countless backgrounds together in the pursuit of

bettering their lives. However, because students are indeed from so many

different backgrounds and upbringings, many controversial education issues

unfortunately arise from this.

Even though a teacher may be acting one hundred percent in the name of

helping their students and trying to provide them with a brighter future, they

can still manage to get themselves in hot water if they even slightly touch on

issues that go against what a parent has taught their children. Of course, it’s

always best when a parent cares deeply about their child, but it is a parent’s

involvement in the educational process that can sometimes serve to slow the

educational process. On the other side of this coin, the inclusion of as many

different opinions and spiritual beliefs can actually help schools keep the

knowledge pool fresh and awareness levels as high as possible.

Unfortunately, issues such as religion and government will most likely never

be completely agreed upon. This would explain why so many schools have

become more and more stringent with the topics they address within the

classroom. Even the citing of the pledge of allegiance has been drawn a

considerable amount of criticism, and schools have been quick to make sure

that religion is only discusses in the leanest terms possible. And while

Americans love to argue politics, other countries do not have that liberty,

causing government and political issues to be quite taboo in the classrooms

of other countries.

Current Issues in Education

Education has the power to completely enable people for greatness. But one

of the current issues in education is the inability for educational institutions

to adapt well enough to changing times in order to provide this enabling

power. Although one of the most timeless arguments that exists in the world

of education is that of classical versus new age methods, the educational

body still needs to be able to evolve in order to help students meet the ever

growing needs and competition of the world at large.

Unfortunately, there are simply too many opinions for this issue to be quickly

resolved. Although it is quite understandable, and expected, for parents to

care deeply about their child’s education, this care can sometimes come in a

blind form which only serves to hold the educational system as a whole back

from successful progression.

Another closely related issue that deals with educational institutions

challenges with properly evolving is the fact that our children our evolving

faster than ever. While they do possess amazing potential in dispersing

extremely helpful resources, the latest media streams such as today’s

television programs and the advent of the Internet seem to have a super

growth factor for our children. They are now able to access the entire world

with the click of a few buttons. They are inundated with masses of

information, trends, fads, opinions and news that they don’t always know
what to do with. Schools need to be able to address this and grow at the

same rate as our children in order to maintain their interest.

Education Issues

There is no doubt that education provides the foundation for virtually all that

we do. Regardless of your current job or the ideal career that you aspire to

achieve, education most certainly plays an incredibly vital role. From

construction worker to stay at home mother and from high powered lawyer

to the teachers themselves, education has the power to make anything

possible. Unfortunately, without education, countless problems arise, and

arise quite quickly. Whether you are a prospective student considering

higher learning or a parent look for educational resources and help in

deciding what’s best for your children, there are dozens of important

education issues that you should make yourself aware of.

One of the biggest challenges that schools and educational systems often

face is the lack of resources. In this sense, one might see that the rich get

smarter while the poor remain at dismal competency levels. Too many

schools lack vital resources, such as computers and updated text books,

which simply leaves some unfortunate schools spinning their tires in the

proverbial mud. This lack of resources is most often directly related to a lack

of financial funding. Understandably, some schools are limited in their

funding due to the small budgets associated with small towns and

municipalities. So one of the main issues that has come up because of this is
how to get neighboring towns and municipalities to work together to pool

their resources and financial funding. Figuring out how to fairly distribute

resources has long been one of the biggest challenges within the educational

system.

Other issues such as religion in the classroom sometimes seem to be

insurmountable. The diversity of children’s backgrounds and spiritual

upbringings has long been a serious point of strife within the realm of

education. But such issues can be addressed and met with success if we

maintain sufficient open-mindedness.

The best chance we all have at reducing the harm and number of these

issues is by pooling our abilities. Whether it comes in the form of paying our

taxes on time, volunteering our time at a local school or donating used

materials to schools, there is always something that we can be doing to help

provide a brighter future for our children and for ourselves. It’s important to

recognize that the education of others does indeed affect us as well. There’s

nothing separate about it. With the right tools and resources, others will be

provided with the opportunity to help create something amazing that all of

us will be able to gain from. (http://www.educationissues.org/)
