President’s Note

My (and Your) 2¢
Since I became president of the Friends of the Modesto library this spring, things
have  been  moving  quickly.    Outgoing  president  Stella  Beratlis  has  generated  so
many  good  programs  in  the  last  three  years;  she  will  be  a  hard  act  to  follow.
Guess I’ll just ride on her coattails a bit with some reminders of existing programs
championed under Stella’s dedicated leadership.
Two  cents  doesn’t  sound  like  it  goes  very  far,  but  when  many  2¢  are  added  to‐
gether, they mount up to real money for the library. A hardy work crew recently
used a small cement mixer to clean nickels, dimes, quarters and many, many pen‐
nies pitched into the fountains at Vintage Faire Mall. Washed and dried, those 2¢
+  2¢ + 2¢ equal thousands of dollars to  FOML coffers. Another small work crew
pasted in 200+ bookplates in books to be distributed to children April 30 as part
of the Diá De Los Niños/Libros celebration of reading. The books came from vol‐
unteer time at the Scholastic discount sales [May 5‐10 this year], and from dona‐
tions at the November Scholastic Book Fairs. Organization of the Used Book Sale
on May 7 is underway by Clare Noonan. The Little Shop in the Modesto Library is
reorganizing and will focus more strongly on used books. The number of docent‐
led  library  tours  is  increasing.  Preparations  for  Stanislaus  Reads  and  Summer
Reading are in full swing.
Do keep pitching those pennies!  We get one more haul of fountain coins before
this  windfall  ends.    So,  for  my  2¢  here  are  a  few  other  ways  you  can  help  or  be
helped.
Big Ticket Items in Your Budget?
Amazon orders of ANY kind can help the library!  Not just book orders:  if you or‐
der a new computer, a new pen set, a tablecloth, a digital camera – it doesn’t mat‐
ter what – if you use the Stanislaus County Library Foundation webpage. Link to
Barnes & Noble  and  Amazon  at  http://www.stanislauslibraryfoundation.org/  and
a percentage of your sale goes to the Foundation at no extra cost to you through
referral fees.
Need Gas?
Raley’s and  Save  Mart grocery cards  are another  way to help  the Friends of the
Modesto Library help the library.  At Raley’s you can even use the card before a
gasoline  purchase  and  the  Friends  get  pennies  on  the  dollar  –  again  at  no  extra
cost  to  you.    If  you  cater  a  party  through  either  store  chain,  make  sure  that  big
ticket  item  gets  logged  on  your  grocery  card.    The  two  grocery  programs  are
bringing  in  a  few  hundreds  of  dollars  each  year  –  pennies  at  a  time  –  and  the
Friends can pass on those dollars to the library!
Free ebooks!
For those of you who are going digital, the library offers you links to online sites
of free eBooks at http://www.stanislauslibrary.org/rc_ebooks.shtml.
