Gourmet Food Trucks Come to Long Beach
May 6, 2011
City of Long Beach Memorandum
Working Together to Serve
Through both the efforts of the Design District and Councilmember O’Donnell, we
had five very, very popular food trucks come to Long Beach on Coronado Street,
just north of Anaheim on Wednesday. This was a popular event and attracted
approximately 500 people, many from out of the area. These food trucks are
extremely well liked and have their own websites, and are followed religiously by
a fan-base loyal to each food truck. With Council direction, we have been
working to help facilitate these types of food trucks to be in Long Beach. This is
an event, which will go on every Wednesday through August 2011.
As far back as anyone can remember, each year the federal government
provided the City of Long Beach approximately $2 million dollars to hire summer
youth. This provides young men and women from ages 16-24 the opportunity to
work for public, private and non-profit entities, gaining great work experience to
enter the job market. This year the federal government dropped that number to
zero. Basically, no city in America is getting any youth employment dollars in
the coming year…..That did not stop Bryan Rogers from Workforce
Development. Bryan was able to anticipate this and craft together approximately
$250K from various funding sources to continue our “Hire-a-Youth Program” in
some fashion. Attached are three flyers that Workforce is putting out: one for
the youth, one for parents; and one for employers to get people into internships
and job opportunities.
It was a terrible blow to find out earlier this week that the Hot August Nights event
has been cancelled for Long Beach. A lot of energy was put into the event,
primarily through the CVB and the Mayor’s office. It had the ability to perhaps
even match the Grand Prix attendance throughout a one-week period.
Additionally, through the sales of many of these vintage cars, we would reap
sales tax advantages. The bottom line is, the city of Reno made a huge effort to
make sure that they were able to keep this event. Both mayors of Reno and
Sparks evidenced this by joining the Board of Directors for Hot August Nights just
this month.
