Statement of the Democratic Forces of San Francisco Bay Area in
Commemoration of the Twenty-third Anniversary of Burmas 8-8-88 Democratic Uprising
Today is the 23
rd
Anniversary of the 8-8-88 Democracy Uprising where all nationalities
from Burma, people of all classes, all people, monks, lay people and students together with the
patriotic military personnel who had forsaken their lives, sweat and tears and joined in a
peaceful movement to end the one party dictatorship, to bring about democracy and human
rights and to usher in a true democratic government.
During all these years since 1962, the progressive students and youth, who risked their
lives for the country, have led opposition movements against military dictatorship and the one-
party totalitarianism. But on August in 1988 the students led the peoples uprising and incited all
the nationalities and the whole people for their participation. The force of that uprising led to the
downfall of the Burma Socialist Program Party (BSPP) that had oppressed the country and its
people for 26 years. But the military crushed the peoples' uprising with use of arms and force
and reinstated the military dictatorship.
The military dictatorships (SLORC, SPDC) ignored the whole countys desire for
democracy and human rights and ethnic nationality rights and used every means to maintain
their self-interest, power and wealth by manipulation and control till this day. They have instilled
fear and submission in the lives of all the people through manipulation and aggression.
Min Ko Naing and the 88 Generation Group leaders and the ethnic nationalities leaders,
hundreds of democracy activists, monks lay people, students and the peoples have been
detained and given long sentences and the peoples true desire portrayed through the 1990
election results were totally ignored. In 2003 at Depayin, the lives of the peoples leader Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo and NLD members were endangered by their assassination attempt.
In 2007, the peaceful march of the monks was cracked down violently.
In 2008 when Nargis Cyclone struck the country, ignoring the lives of the people in need
, the military restricted the movements of the people who were trying engage in humanitarian aid
and arrested many. In the ethnic areas they use violence and resort to armed aggression and
oppress the people; they use rape as a weapon and destroy the livelihood of the villagers and
commit rampant human rights abuses.
They rudely disregarded all offers for a peaceful change for the countrys future but
legitimized the military and adopted the 2008 Constitution that ensured the military power . They
held an election, in spite the lack of interest by the people installed a group of military personnel
as a civilian government.
We fully support the peoples leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the position and activities of
the National League for Democracy NLD. We respect and honor those who are continuing the
struggle for democracy through different means inside and pledge to work together whenever
the situation allows. We consider the armed response of the ethnic nationalities' against the
aggression of the military dictators in civilian clothes as a just war. We fully support the UN
Human Rights Representatives call for a Commission of Inquiry against the human rights abuses
of the military dictator groups. To solve the political problems, general difficulties the soonest,
the following political actions need to be carried out.
1. To immediately release all those who are imprisoned for their political conscience.
2. To stop all armed offenses against the ethnic nationalities and initiate steps towards true
peace.
3. To stop human rights abuses that take place in many different forms and patterns.
4. To embark on a dialog that includes all opposition forces.
In conclusion, we declare that we will continue our struggle to uproot the military dictatorial
system and join hands with all democratic forces inside and in exile struggling for democracy and
human rights and internal peace. We support all efforts towards establishing a Union including
all the different states. Today on the 23
rd
Anniversary of the 8-8-88 Democratic Uprising we vow
and pledge to continue the struggle together in unity until the new Democratic Union is
established.
