the 73rd celebration in 2012!
There is defnitely a historical con-
nection with the theme and the Original
1939 Order of Knights of the Red Flannel
Drawers. According to the authors of the
Cedar Springs Story, Sue Harrison and
Donna DeJong, the history of the Order of
the Knights of the Red Flannel Drawers is
as follows:
The frst Red Flannel Day was held
Nov. 11, 1939 and Carleton Cady wrote in
that issue of the Grand Rapids Press:
Lurid lingerie adorned the limbs of
nearly every citizen. Scarlet certifcates
of knighthood were issued to members of
the Order of Knights of the Red Flannel
Drawers, who proudly wore the badge,
which, in miniature, reproduced the ar-
ticle that on winter Mondays fies from
Cedar Springs clotheslines.

Helping out
On Thursday, Sept. 22nd both Kindel & Co. and
Latitudes Roadhouse in downtown Howard City
will give 10 to 15 percent of their sales as a gift to
Still Waters Counseling Center. Patrons must show
this announcement to the staff so their bill will be
selected for the 10 to 15 percent gift. Still Waters
Counseling Ministry serves this community with
free counseling and seminars to help people with
problems and crisis in their lives. It is located at 218
N. Ensley, kitty-corner from the Library. This effort
by these two businesses is an important fund-raiser
for Still Waters since Still Waters entire operating

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
A waste of
taxpayers time
and money
TO THE EDITOR:
At the last township board
meeting the issue of adding
greenhouses and landscaping
to the C-1 commercial prop-
erty was addressed and passed
unanimously. This will offcially
allow John Powell to operate the
greenhouse as part of his exca-
vating business on M-82, which
could have been handled like
this in the frst place. Instead,
this happens 2.5 years after he
was notifed that he was in vio-
lation of the zoning ordinance.
This resulted in several meetings
that included the planning com-
mission and the zoning board of
appeals, which turned him down
for a variance. This whole issue
has cost us taxpayers thousands
of dollars in township attorney
fees as well as John, who has
spent $900 to have two special
meetings and over $9,200 in at-
torney fees. My point to all of this
is: this could have been avoided if
the township board would work
with the citizens in the frst place
instead of fghting against them.
The zoning ordinances need to ft
our community. We all need to
be more involved with the town-
ship meetings and keep on top of
what is going on. The only way to
make a change is to make sure
our voices are heard and stick to-
gether as a community.

Doing business
elsewhere
TO THE EDITOR:
I have been in the used car
business selling a few used cars
since 1973 because I enjoy meet-
ing people and to supplement
our income. I have had several
locations in Reynolds Town-
ship over the years. In 2008, I
decided to sell on M-82 and ap-
proached John Powell, who gave
me a space on his commercial lot
at no charge. I went to the Reyn-
olds Township supervisor at that
time and was told no problem
and signed the necessary ap-
proval paperwork. I then went to
the state and obtained my class
B used car permit and put 2 cars
on the lot for sale. Shortly there-
after, John received a letter from
the township stating I was in vio-
lation and I would have to stop.
I went to see the new supervisor
who informed me that the pre-
vious supervisor had authority
to approve my permit, however,
they would approve my permit
but I would have to go through
the process of starting with new
paperwork, a $450 fee and sched-
ule a meeting with the planning
commission. I saw the handwrit-
ing on the wall and decided to go
elsewhere. I was welcomed by
other townships but decided on
a great location in Solon Town-
ship, Cedar Springs. I met with
the zoning administrator there
and told him what I wanted to do.
He said, OK. I asked when he
could schedule a meeting for nec-
essary approval and how much it
would cost. He laughed and said
there is no meeting and no cost.
Welcome to the township. The
whole process took less than 15
minutes and I was in business. I
am now happily doing business
out of town, even though I live in
Reynolds Township.

members together to socialize and discover the array of
services the Montcalm County Sheriffs Department has
to offer.
This event is an occasion for the Sheriffs Department
to showcase some of the equipment and technology they
regularly employ. One of the displays will be the Mobile
Command Center, which provides an opportunity to es-
tablish a remote base of operations for any situation that
may incur in which they may need ready access to in-
formation, a meeting place, or technological equipment.
Also in attendance will be the Canine Unit with Deputy
Mike Williams and his companion, Rex, who is looking
forward to demonstrating his skills. The Mounted Divi-
sion will be present with their friendly horses that enjoy
being petted and spoken to. Both of which should be a
favorite for families and children. The Sheriffs Depart-
ment Dive Team will demonstrate their equipment and
explain the necessary training and skills involved with
this much needed service.
In addition, M106.3 WGLM Radio, our local source
of news, information and music based out of Greenville
will be broadcasting live. The O Brother Band will also
be playing that day and the tractor pulls sponsored by
the Flat River Antique Tractor Club will begin at 1:00
pm. Sixty vendors are expected to display their wares
that day at the Pierson Outdoor Market ranging from
collectibles to crafts to produce.
Gifts and handouts donated by the Neighborhood
Watch program, J & H Family Stores, Sticks-N-Stones,
and M106.3 will be offered, so make sure you come and
collect some of the fun give-a-ways.
Furthermore, participants are encouraged to ob-
tain information regarding the Neighborhood Watch
program and sign up for email alerts and newsletters.
Updated information from Undersheriff Mark Bellinger
regarding the murder investigation of Mr. and Mrs.
Greene will also be available.
There is entertainment, information, and fun for ev-
eryone in the family. Thank you and we hope to see you
and your family on Saturday, September 24th between
10 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you have any questions or need fur-
ther information you may contact either Dawn Miles at
(616) 788-8602 or Stacy Frodl at Sticks-N-Stones 636-
8677.
SIDNEY Wood carving is a fa-
vorite pastime for Edmores Ralph
Joslin.
The carvings, often created us-
ing reclaimed lumber from local
barns, depict wildlife, patriotic
themes and scenes from yester-
year, including pioneer activities
such as logging and making maple
syrup. Joslin, 81, likes to tell stories
of his heritage through his carv-
ings. He collects antique tools and
artifacts, and has a keen apprecia-
tion for hardships and triumphs of
earlier days.
A collection of his Wood-
carved Creations and Early Ameri-
can Artifacts may be seen now
through Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to
7 p.m., in Montcalm Community
Colleges Instruction North Build-
ing in Sidney.
Admission is free.

If the thought of bed bugs attacking your
home has you scratching already, here are some
tips to help you fgure out if you have bed bugs:
n Check for bites. Bed bug bites are usually
fat welts or raised, red bumps that itch. Howev-
er, only 30 percent of people who are bitten have
a reaction to the bite.
n Keep an eye out for bed bug droppings or
small blood stains on your sheets when you wake
up.
n Bed bugs can also smell like raspberries,
raw beef or moldy shoes in places that are in-
fested.
n Be on the lookout for eggs! Bed bug eggs
are pearly white and diffcult to spot with the hu-
man eye. Adult bed bugs are about the size of a
grain of rice.
n Bed bugs are nocturnal, so the best time to
try to spot them is at night. Use a fashlight!
n Spot one? Now help is available in the form
of a spray-RID Home Lice, Bedbug and Dust
Mite Spray-designed to be one of the frst steps
to get rid of bed bugs. For more information, visit
www.ridbedbugs.com and say good riddance!

GERD Revisited
Last year I wrote about GERD, Gastro Esophageal Reux Disease. This is another one of those man-made diseases that is
related to our modern culture, food, and eating practices. There are some new warnings about long term use of PPIs, Proton
Pump Inhibitors, like Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium.( Rebound Hyperacidity, Osteoporosis, reaction with other meds, etc). These
medications can block up to 90% of the stomach acid. That is good if you have a bleeding ulcer that needs to be healed, but is
not good for long term use. If stomach acid is blocked too much, proteins cannot be digested into amino acids. These are the
build blocks of all body structures. It would be like a contractor trying to build a house with only 10% of the required lumber.
Not good.
Causes of GERD may be hereditary with a genetically weak valve or weak esophageal muscles, but mostly, it is mechanical.
Coughing will intermittently push the stomach up through the diaphragm, stretching and weakening the valve action of the hiatus.
A big belly will mechanically push the stomach up through the hiatus when lying down or bending over. If a meal is too large,
there will not be enough enzymes to pre-digest all the protein and some of it will begin to putrefy causing gas. This will create
back pressure on the hiatus, back-washing acidic liquids up into the esophagus. Gas forming yeast and bacteria may also be a
contributing factor. Nicotine, Caffeine, Alcohol, and Stress all cause acid production when no food is present, contributing to this
problem.
Some people with GERD, especially the older crowd, actually do not have enough acid. You can test this by taking a teaspoon
of distilled apple cider vinegar at the beginning of a meal. If it helps the reux, then you need to add acid. Use Betine HCl prior
to the meal to increase acid. If vinegar makes you feel worse, then you have too much acid.
If you must temporarily block stomach acid, it would be safer to use an H2 blocker like Zantac, Tagemet, or Pepcid. But
these have long term problems too. So it is best to x the under lying problem instead just covering it up, by treating just the
symptom.
The Blood Type Diet and/or elimination of all dairy products have been helpful for most people. Try
this for two weeks. Then challenge to see what happens. Reduce the quantity of food in a meal. Avoid
grazing all day long. Do not eat anything before going to bed. Propping the head of your bed up four
inches uses gravity to prevent back-wash at night. Reducing the size of your waist reduces mechanical
pressure.
To heal esophagitis and gastritis, Alovera juice has been miraculous in many cases (one teaspoon,
undiluted, four times per day). One teaspoon intermittently for heart burn is also a good option.
Occasional use of Tums or a little Baking Soda will help heartburn, but avoid Rollaids (they have lots
of aluminum in them). Probiotics (acidophilus) have been a great help to reduce gas forming yeast.
Digestive enzymes with pepsin assist with digesting foods. Fiber and activated charcoal absorb toxins in
the food that may be causing problems. Herbal Slippery Elm is very cooling for a hot digestive tract. A
liver cleanse every 4-6 months is highly benecial. There are many answers besides blocking all the natural
acids you need. Look beyond the purple pill.

Tri County School News
ACADEMI CS ARTS ATHLETI CS ACHI EVEMENT
September 19, 2011
Welcome to the Tri County School News where information and articles
about our school is published every other week in the River Valley
Shopper. The next school news will be published October 3.
Allen Cumings was hired as the new superintendent of
Tri County last spring. He isnt new to the school as he has
been here for 13 years and has worked as a teacher, coach,
principal, and Curriculum Director. Al loves to hunt, sh, and
play sports. Music has also been a large part of his life.
Al steps into the superintendent position during a difcult
time. The biggest challenge for Tri County is the funding of
K through 12 education. Its not what it should be, said Al,
referring to the State cuts in education. He anticipates more
cuts next year, but wants to work and make these challenges
become positive changes. Al sites the importance of community
partnership. I cant emphasize enough how appreciative I am
of the support from the staff and community. I have seen it and
felt it.
Als goals for Tri County: I want us to be known for
educational excellence, where other schools come to us to see
how we (Tri County Schools) are doing things.
Kathi Wood joins
Tri County as the
new Chief Financial
Ofcer. She received
her masters degree
at Western Michigan
University. Kathi
began her career in
Kelloggsville Public
Schools where she
worked as a secretary. I
developed a passion for education which
prompted me to go back to school to nish
my undergrad degree and then my masters.
Kathi worked in Kelloggsville Public
Schools for 20 years, seven as a secretary, one
year as the Accounts Payable Administrative
Assistant, three years as the Network
Technician, and nine years at the Business
Manager/Technology Director.
When Kathi isnt working, she loves to
spend time on the lake, play golf, and sh.
Congratulations to Jennifer Arnold for being the 2011
John P. Varineau Outstanding Music Educator Award
winner. Jennifer has been teaching music at Tri County for
16 years.
The John P. Varineau Outstanding Music Educator Award
was established on the occasion of Johns 25th Anniversary
with the Grand Rapids Symphony to not only honor his
achievements in the area of music education, but to support
others who also work tirelessly to ensure that music and
music-making is an active part of every students education.
Initial funds for the award were generously provided by
Peter M. Wege.
The award is presented each spring. The recipient
receives: A $1,000 cash award for the school program,
specialized opportunities for the
recipients students to interact
with the Grand Rapids Symphony
musicians and education
programs (opportunities may
include attending concerts, in-
school concerts, master classes,
and /or side by side concerts
with GRS Musicians) and two
complimentary season tickets
to the Richard and Helen DeVos
Classical Series for the year of
his/her award.

MacNaughton Elementary students will be learning about art history this year. Starting with
the cave artists, we will travel through time to the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Middle Ages and
Renaissance periods of history. We will be making the greatest projects and having a lot of fun
learning about history and art.
The Tri County Middle School Boosters Club would like to thank everyone
who was able to attend the open house again this year. With parent and teacher
support, students were able to meet their homeroom teacher, tour the school, and
even enjoy some free popcorn and snow cones. They were also able to have some
fun on the inatable bounce equipment provided by Jaks Rentals.
The Boosters continues to appreciate your support by donating empty ink
cartridges, old cell phones, and by clipping the BOXTOPS for education. These
are all simple ways to help the school earn money to provide more experiences to
further our students education.
Lastly, we would like to invite you to our monthly meetings to help organize
future events at the Middle School. Meetings take place on the 3rd Monday of
each month with our next meeting on Monday September 19 at 6:30 pm in the
middle school library. While youre there, please take a moment to admire the new
sign on the east end of the building that the boosters were able to contribute to the
school this year. Feel free to contact them at msboosters@tricountyschools.com.

Lately there have been some questions as to what the money from the high
school football concession stand is used. The high school football concession stand
is completely not-for-prot and managed by class advisors. All monies made are
put back toward the students. More specically, the money funds homecoming
projects like banners, eld painting, and hall decorating; it pays for the senior color
section in the yearbook, the class composite that hangs in the hallway for years to
come, the oral spray for the graduation ceremony, the owers seniors may carry
at graduation, and it offsets the cost of graduation caps and gowns and the price of
the senior trip. There are many other costs as well, but they are too numerous to
list. All students benet from the money raised at the football concession stand.
Additionally, students are needed to work home games, both JV and Varsity,
from thirty minutes prior to the game until after the game has nished. They may
help at the service windows, to prep, clean, and/or stock. Students will earn money
toward prom tickets or other class bills that need to be paid. Students will not be
given money directly. If you would like your student to work, please contact the
junior class advisors: arenner@tricountyschools.com or ksmith@tricountyschools.
com. Students may also contact us directly.
As a not-for-prot group, any donations of cleansers, rags, mop heads, a mop
bucket, paper towel, dish soap, large plastic tubs with lids, etc. would be greatly
appreciated. These can be left in the high school ofce, brought to any home football
game, or contact one of the advisors for pick up. Thank you for any help you can
provide and for your continued support.

the Michigan Department of Labor Unemploy-
ment Insurance Agency (what we commonly
call Unemployment, which pays out Michigan
unemployment benets to the states laid off work
force), that unemployment benets should not be
paid to a person who loses their job because of an
inappropriate use of his employers equipment.
The employee, Mr. Berglund, was red for inap-
propriate use of his employers equipment, most
importantly, its computers.
Breaking the rules. Berglund worked for Indus-
trial Technology Institute. He had a second job
teaching on a university campus. Testimony at the
Unemployment hearing was that when Berglund
was initially put on probation at ITI, he was told
not to use ITIs resources or equipment to do his
other job or to access inappropriate websites us-
ing their computers. Berglund rst ignored that
edict when he downloaded personal materials
and a paper a student had emailed him.
Naughty conduct. Also, ITI personnel thought
Berglund committed misconduct when he visited
web sites that displayed nudity, some showing
swimsuit models, Victorias Secret ads, and a
television station that shows explicit scenes. ITI
feared those websites opened its own network
to a greater risk of being hacked and spied on
through unwanted pop-ups and spam. Reason-
able fear.
Whats misconduct? According to Unem-
ployment rules, an individual is disqualied
from receiving benets if he was suspended or
discharged for misconduct connected with his
work. Misconduct is such a willful disregard
of an employers interest as is found in deliber-
ate violations or disregard of standards of behav-
ior which the employer has the right to expect of
his employee, or to show an intentional and
substantial disregard of the employers interests
or of the employees duties and obligations to his
employer. Quite bad stuff.
Whats not misconduct? Mere inefciency, un-
satisfactory conduct, failure in good performance
as the result of inability or incapacity, inadverten-
cies or ordinary negligence in isolated instances,
or good-faith errors in judgment or discretion are
not to be deemed misconduct.
S** in the drawer. Was Berglunds use of his em-
ployers computer to surf for websites showing
nudity a willful disregard in violation of stan-
dards of behavior? Berglund insisted that surng
for nudity was not as if he had dirty magazines in
his desk drawer. And, in any event, it did not af-
fect his work performance at ITI so it should not
matter. Personal use of your work computer was
allowed at ITI. Berglund felt his was personal
use, and it did not affect anybody else. Most im-
portantly, he still got his work done.
The times the matter. It was ITIs Human Re-
sources Director, K. Glowzinski, who did Ber-
glund in. Glowzinski testied that Berglund
kept the inappropriate non-company websites
open for 3 to 4 hours a day. Maybe a quick
peak at Victorias secret for lingerie for his girl-
friend would have passed muster. But a half day?
Game over for Berglund. Now he can take all
the time he wants, on his own time, that is, and
without pay.

Woody found his way to the
shelter, but before he came to
us he had an unfortunate run
in with a porcupine. He is all
better now and this little guy
is looking for a good home.
Woody is a Boston Terrier
mix, about 2 years old and
weighs about 20 pounds. He
is not a big dog, so an apart-
ment would be ok. His coat
is white and brindle. He is
potty trained, good with chil-
dren and other dogs. Woody
is eager to please! ID#
