Dear Mr. Kenneth Katzman:Applying accurate and realistic reports are prerequisite for grasping thetruth about the Iranian civil society and the forces playing a role in it. Whilewe appreciate your hard work in preparing articles of information for the UScongress, we prescribe to careful and exact coverage, for only in thisfashion the interests of the American as well as the Iranian people wouldbe protected. Presentation of correct and factual reports will considerablyaide in comprehending the issues and conditions in Iran. This willsubsequently lead to effective decision making in dealing with Iran.In your report there is an obvious error that is alarming. On page 11 of yourreport where you address the Student associations, you refer to a fakeorganization by the name of “Confederation of Iranian Students” as animportant Iranian student group. Let us caution you that this organizationdoes not exist inside or outside of Iran. This assembly has absolutely noconnection to Student Union-Office to Foster Unity. The Islamic StudentUnion is the largest student organizations in the country that its membersare elected by the entire student community. Thousands of students aremembers of the Student Union-Foster to Unity and it is active in most thecolleges and universities in Iran. Hundreds of them have been imprisonedover the past decade. At the present time 20 of them are still in jail. ThisStudent confederation you refer to is a small group in Washington DC areathat has no base among the Iranian students within the country or otherlocations in the world.Mr. Arjang Davoudi is a respectable political prisoner. However, he hasnever been a student activist. His age at the time of arrest is an indicativeof not belonging to student movement. The so called Iranian StudentConfederation actually misuses the name of the Iranian Confederationwhich was the strongest opposition group in Europe and North Americaduring the Shah’s reign. At the time of July 9
th
1998 student uprising in Iran, this bogus Student Confederation had not even formed yet. Years after July9
th
of 1998, Mr. Amir Abaas Fakhraavar declared its inception. Based onMr. Fakhraavar own statements, at the time of 1998 student uprising, hewas a soldier employed in Iran’s security forces. He never played a role instudent’s uprising in Iran, neither at the night of the attack by governmentforces nor at the subsequent demonstrations. Mr. Farokh Shafiei, a studentof Tehran University, was the architect of the student uprisings of 1998.During subsequent unrest the Student Union-Office to Foster Unity led thedemonstrations in all Universities. The Students United Front was mainly in

charge of staging the demonstrations. Thousands of students participatedin that large movement. Therefore, presence of an ordinary non-studentperson does not accommodate him the title of a student opposition leaderin the uprising of July of 1998!We strongly urge you to present all your documentations that point to therole of this bogus organization in student uprising in Iran. We, a group offormer and present student activists expect you to correct your report out ofrespect and deference to student movement in Iran. Please do not allowthe US congress to be manipulated by bogus and marginal entities withinthe student movement. These have conspired with the government todestroy the democratic movement in the country.Mistakes of these types can mislead the US officials in contriving analternative system of government in Iran and hence severely damage therelationship between the two countries. They also provide an excuse for theIranian government to continue its suppression of democratic forces.Best regards
