Kenneth Katzman: Applying accurate and realistic reports are prerequisite for grasping the truth about the Iranian civil society and the forces playing a role in it. While we appreciate your hard work in preparing articles of information for the US congress, we prescribe to careful and exact coverage, for only in this fashion the interests of the American as well as the Iranian people would be protected. Presentation of correct and factual reports will considerably aide in comprehending the issues and conditions in Iran. This will subsequently lead to effective decision making in dealing with Iran. In your report there is an obvious error that is alarming. On page 11 of your report where you address the Student associations, you refer to a fake organization by the name of Confederation of Iranian Students as an important Iranian student group. Let us caution you that this organization does not exist inside or outside of Iran. This assembly has absolutely no connection to Student Union-Office to Foster Unity. The Islamic Student Union is the largest student organizations in the country that its members are elected by the entire student community. Thousands of students are members of the Student Union-Foster to Unity and it is active in most the colleges and universities in Iran. Hundreds of them have been imprisoned over the past decade. At the present time 20 of them are still in jail. This Student confederation you refer to is a small group in Washington DC area that has no base among the Iranian students within the country or other locations in the world. Mr. Arjang Davoudi is a respectable political prisoner. However, he has never been a student activist. His age at the time of arrest is an indicative of not belonging to student movement. The so called Iranian Student Confederation actually misuses the name of the Iranian Confederation which was the strongest opposition group in Europe and North America during the Shahs reign. At the time of July 9th 1998 student uprising in Iran, this bogus Student Confederation had not even formed yet. Years after July 9th of 1998, Mr. Amir Abaas Fakhraavar declared its inception. Based on Mr. Fakhraavar own statements, at the time of 1998 student uprising, he was a soldier employed in Irans security forces. He never played a role in students uprising in Iran, neither at the night of the attack by government forces nor at the subsequent demonstrations. Mr. Farokh Shafiei, a student of Tehran University, was the architect of the student uprisings of 1998. During subsequent unrest the Student Union-Office to Foster Unity led the demonstrations in all Universities. The Students United Front was mainly in

charge of staging the demonstrations. Thousands of students participated in that large movement. Therefore, presence of an ordinary non-student person does not accommodate him the title of a student opposition leader in the uprising of July of 1998! We strongly urge you to present all your documentations that point to the role of this bogus organization in student uprising in Iran. We, a group of former and present student activists expect you to correct your report out of respect and deference to student movement in Iran. Please do not allow the US congress to be manipulated by bogus and marginal entities within the student movement. These have conspired with the government to destroy the democratic movement in the country. Mistakes of these types can mislead the US officials in contriving an alternative system of government in Iran and hence severely damage the relationship between the two countries. They also provide an excuse for the Iranian government to continue its suppression of democratic forces. Best regards
