Edvard Munch (1863 1944)
is a world-renowned artist. He is considered a pioneer of expressionism, and has had a
great impact on the development of modern painting.
The intellectual and artistic environment in Kristiania (Oslo) was important for Munchs
development. In the 1890s he painted some of his masterpieces such as Scream, Ma-
donna, Jealousy, Separation and Kiss. The repeating themes were often love, anxiety
and death, and depict the artists own emotional experiences. These motifs are also
central in the so-called Frieze of Life, a series of motifs that he worked on his whole
life. Munch was an inventive graphical artist and his works in the aula of the University
of Oslo also show Munchs skills when it comes to large decorative works of art.
Munch spent long periods of his life in Germany and France and it was there that he
got his international break-through in the early 1890s. After a nervous breakdown,
Munch moved back to Norway in 1909. He never fathered any children, but he is
known to have said that his paintings were his children.
The Munch Museum
was opened in Oslo in 1963 and includes 1100 paintings, 3000 drawings and 18000
graphical prints. In his will, Munch gave the collection to the City of Oslo. Two years
after their brutal robbery, the paintings Scream and Madonna were returned to the
museum in 2006. A large collection of Munchs paintings are on display in the Na-
tional Gallery.
Scream
In his memoirs, Edvard Munch relates Scream (1893) to a specifc experience a walk
with friends at sunset in the Ekeberg hills in Oslo. Scream is an expression of Mans
desperation and anxiety, connected to existential insecurity. Mankind is on its way to-
wards a new and frightening Century, abandoned by God, who Nietzsche in 1872 had
declared dead. Because of its powerful expressional force, the painting has become
one of the worlds main icons in art history.

Facts and history
There are some doubts as to the meaning of the name of Oslo. Researchers agree that the term
Os can be understood as either a long and narrow hill or as a reference to a pre-Christian God. The
second half of the name, Lo, generally refers to a feld. Hence the ancient name of Oslo may either
mean the feld below the hill or the feld of the Gods.
The frst signs of urban settlements date back to around the year 900 and by the year 1300 Oslo was
already an important trade centre. After the great fre in 1624 the Danish King Christian IV rebuilt
the city and renamed it Christiania. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city was still the size
of a small town, but its population began to grow rapidly with the mid-19th century economic surge.
In the period from 1850 to 1900 the population increased from a mere 30 000 to 220 000 inhabitants.
When Norway gained independence in 1905, national awareness increased and this sentiment led
to a Parliamentary Decree renaming the city Oslo in 1925.
Oslo is presently going through the biggest changes it has seen for decades. The city continues to
grow in population and the building of new housing, business properties and recreational areas
along the harbour is in full progress. The new Opera house is already one of Norways most vis-
ited attractions. Today Oslo boasts a larger selection of museums, shopping, restaurants, festivals,
nightlife and entertainment than ever before.

Great skiing and the worlds best after-ski!
Oslo is the only major city in Europe that can ofer great skiing just minutes away from the city
centre by underground train. Why not try a city break out of the ordinary, where you can com-
bine a winter sport holiday with pulsating nightlife, world famous museums and attractions, great
shopping and high-class cuisine. Oslo Winter Park Tryvann is located only 20 minutes from the city
centre. The slopes are normally open from early December to Easter. In addition to alpine slopes,
there is also an international standard half-pipe for snow-boarders, as well as a terrain park with
moguls and jumps. Floodlighting allows skiing until 10 pm during weekdays.
More than 2600 km (1600 miles) of prepared cross country ski-trails run deep into the forests of
Oslo, some of which are foodlit until 10 pm for the special experience of evening skiing. Skiers can
stop for food and refreshments at a choice of 68 picturesque cabins. If skiing is not your forte, try
the ice skating rink at Narvisen in the city centre or at Frogner Stadium.
Christmas in Oslo
Enjoy Christmas shopping in Oslo in December! The city centre and the main high street Karl Jo-
hans gate is beautifully decorated and the Christmas tree outside the old university is lit on the
1st day of Advent.
The Christmas Fair at the Norwegian museum of cultural history is open on the frst two Saturdays
and Sundays of December. The market is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The Santa
workshop, horses and sleighs, concerts and folk-dancing are only some of the activities available
to children and adults. Christmas services are held in the 12th century stave church. At Bogstad
Manor the main building is decorated for the festivities according to 19th century traditions, and
at Brums Verk the old workers houses have been converted into small shops selling weaving,
hand blown glass, pottery, handicraft and designer goods. The majestic Akershus fortress, Aker
Brygge harbour and the Oslo ford create a beautiful frame around the City Hall square, which in
the days before Christmas is flled with concerts, Christmas trees, handicraft, Christmas decorations
and traditional Norwegian Christmas food.

Oslo - an outdoor summer paradise
Oslo is a fantastic city to visit during summer. Try a refreshing dip in the water from one of the many
islands or beaches only minutes away from the city centre by public transport. Due to the Gulf Stream
a swim in the Oslo ford can be surprisingly pleasant with water temperatures up to 23 degrees Cel-
sius! Not to be missed is a sightseeing tour by boat. A lunch cruise or an evening cruise in an old
traditional sailing ship is truly a unique experience popular with locals and tourists alike.
Only 15 minutes away from the citys water front, you can enjoy hiking in the idyllic Oslo forest. Sign-
posted hiking trails will help you fnd your way and most of the trails are also accessible for mountain
biking. Should you need to cool down, you can stop for a swim in one of the many picturesque lakes.
You dont have to go to the countryside to fnd greenery as there are plenty of parks in the city centre
with charming cafs and bars with outdoor seating round every corner. For a walk around the city
neighbourhoods, we highly recommend the area behind the Royal Palace. For people-watching and
a fresh sea breeze, go to Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen harbour. Here you will fnd an abundance of
restaurants and bars where you can sit outside enjoying the bustling nightlife into the long hours of
the bright summer night.
