The Battle of Banu Al-Mustaliq ( Battle of Al-Muraisee’)---well

The Cause: In Sha'ban 5 / January 627, the Prophet (Peace & Prayers Be
Upon Him) received the news that the people of Banu 1-Mustaliq were
gathering together against him, and that their chief al-Harith ibn Abi Dhirar
was making plans of attack. With a strong troop the Prophet went out, and
met Banu l-Mustaliq at a watering place called al-Muraisi'. There they staged
a fight, and Allah put Banu 'I-Mustaliq to fight. Some of their men were
killed, and their women and children were made captives. Then property was
taken as spoils. This included 200 camels, 5,000 goats and captives of about
two hundred families.

Al-Harith however made good his escape. The tribe of Banu Al-Mustaliq had
gathered the Arab tribe and incited them to attack Al-Madinah. The
impetus for this was the so called “ Victory of the pagans in the Battle of
Uhud”
AFTER DEFEATING THE PARTIES, THE PROPHET-PEACE BE UPON HIM-
RALLIED THE MUSLIMS AGAINST THE JEWISH TRIBE OF BANU
NADHEER. THEY BLOCKADED THEIR FORTRESS FOR 25 DAYS, UNTIL
THEY ALL SURRENDERED. THEN THE MUSLIMS SET OFF TOWARD THE
TRIBE OF BANI AL-MUSTALIQ WHO WERE GATHERING FORCES TO
FIGHT THEM. THE TWO ARMIES MET AT A AL-Muraisee.
A FIRECE BATTLE TOOK PLACE WHICH ENDED IN A HEAVY DEFEAT OF
JEWS. MOST OF THEIR WOMEN WERE TAKING CAPTIVES. THEIR
LEADER, AL HARITH ESCAPED, BUT HIS DAUGHTER,BARRAH, FELL
INTO THE HANDS

They killed their fighters and took their wives and children captive. Banu Al-
Mustaliq were led in this battle by Al-Harith bin Abu Dirar, the father of
Juwairiyah.

Her Marriage to the Prophet
Timing :5 AH, she was 20 and he was 57~58
After the Banu Mustaliq tribe were swiftly defeated in the battel against
the Muslims, beause of the Prophet's surprise attack on them, a lot of
captives were taken. Among them was the beautiful Juwayriyya.
When the war booty was divided up, Barrah- who was 20 years old- fell to
the lot of Thabit bin Qais bin Ash-Shammas.
She was very afraid that once the Muslims realized who she was, they would
demand a huge ransom for her safe release.

When the Muslims went back to Medina with their booty and prisoners,
Juwayriyya asked to see Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), hoping that he would
help to prevent what she feared.
she attempted to save herself from the humiliation of captivity and shame
of slavery-for she was the daughter of the leader of her people- by making
an agreement to buy her freedom from Thabit bin Qais
She was permitted to see Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) and was taken to him
while he was with A'isha.
After she had finished speaking, the Prophet thought for a moment, and
then said:
"Shall I tell you what would be better than this?"
She said “What is it?
The Prophet replied “I will pay the price of your freedom and I will marry
you.”
She was so happy that she could not believe that what she heard. She
pleasantly agreed and said “yes”
The Prophet (pbuh) said “Its is done”
Then he asked her to marry him, and she immediately accepted.

The blessed marriage was completed and Barrah became one of the Mothers
of the Believers; after consummating the marriage, the Prophet (pbuh)
named her Juwairiyah.

Why the prophet married her:

To win the friendship of this tribe
She was a beautiful woman
Aisha says… captivated whoever sees her…proof of her beauty
100 people were freed
strength of faith
peaceful woman--- I have chosen Allah and his msgr
Result of the marriage
Although Juwayriyya was young and beautiful and of noble lineage, Prophet
Mohamed (PBUH) was not thinking of all that, he was thinking of how to save
her and all her tribe from an ignoble fate.

By marrying Juwayriyya, Mustaliq were able to enter Islam with honor, and
with the humiliation of their recent defeat removed, and it was not
necessary for them to embark on a war of vengeance that would have
continued until one of the two parties had been annihilated.

All the booty that had been taken from the Banu Mustaliq was returned, and
all the captives were set free, as soon as the marriage took place, for they
were now the in laws of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH).
His objective was to win the friendship of its leader through

About her
1)Her beauty:

She was young, beautiful and of noble lineage.

She was a woman so beautiful that any man who saw her could not help being
struck by her beauty.

Aisha said”

“She had a good looking and captivated whomever saw her.”

When she came to the Prophet (pbuh) to help her pay the contract of
freedom. By Allah , no sooner did I see her standing by my door than I grew
jealous and expected that the Prophet (pbuh) would realize what I realized.”

2)Her contribute to her people

A'isha Praise her

Aisha once said of Juwayriyya,
” Through her, Allah freed 100 people from the family of Banu Al-mustaliq
and
"I know of no woman who was more of a blessing to her people than
Juwayriyya bint al-Harith."

Ibn Hisham also narrated that her father, Al-Harith ,two of his sons and
some people of his tribe embraced Islam.

Her marriage is a blessing of her tribe, this is of course one of the wisdoms
of polygamy in islam.
3) Her strength of Faith

Ibn Hajar stated in “Al-Isabah” that She was a true faithful.

After being taken prisonser in the balttle , her father approached the
Prophet with the ransom required to free her, which he did.

And said to the Prophet(pbuh) : There is no captive like my daughter and I

am too eminent and distinguished to allow that.”

The Prophet(pbuh) replied” What do you think if we let her decide ,is that
not fair?”
He said”yes”

So her father went to her and informed her that Prophet( pbuh) had given
her the choice of remaining with him, or of going with her father back to her
people.
She replied’ I have chosen Allah and His Messenger”
4) The Sincere believer

She was a sincere believer, who fasted much and frequently spent her nights
in prayers
She was a pious worshipper who devoted herself to pleasing Allah, the Most
High and His Messenger.

Evidence that she used to spend long hours worshipping Allah is provided by
the fact that a time of the Prophet ,
Juwayriyya has related, that early one morning the Prophet left her room
while she was doing the dawn (Fajr) prayer.

Later that morning he returned, he passed by her approximately halfway

through the morning and found her still sitting in the same place.

"I recited 4 words 3 times after I left you and if these ar to be weighted
against what you have recited sicne morning , these would outweight them,
and they are

Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, adada khaliqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinata arshihi

,wa middada kalimatih.”

( Glorified be Allah and praise be to HIM as many times as the number of

HIS creatures and according to the pleasure of His Self and according to
the weight of His throne, and according to the ink (used in the recording )
the words (used in Praising HIM) Muslim 2726

“Have you been sitting in the same place since I left you?" he asked.

"Yes," she replied.

“Which reminds us of the following ayat of the Qur'an:

Say: 'If the sea were the ink for the words of My Lord, truly the sea would
be used up before the words of my Lord were completed, and even if We
used the same again to assist. (Qur'an 18:109)

Her Death (672-678)

Juwayriyya lived with Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) for 6 years, until he died
and lived for another 39 years after his death.
The khalifah would provide for her maintainance , but she would spend it all
for the sake of Allah. She performed Haji many times, and was known for
her passionate worship. She kept away from all the trials that raged later
during her life.
