It had been continuously raining due to a low pressure area that had hovered over the country for several days but this did not deter President Ped, IPP Dodgie, PP Linda, Rtns Marcia, Ric, Peth and Marlene and associate member Malou from joining the tree-planting activity at the La Mesa Dam watershed last Saturday, October 8, 2011. At 6:30AM, the group met with District Chair for Environment AG Butch Madarang and other Rotarians at the watershed and proceeded to an area where holes were waiting to be planted with saplings of various species. The day marked the launching of the UN Tree Planting Environment Summit which District 3780 supports. According to AG Butch, all 93 clubs in the district are expected to participate and plant 30 tree saplings each. Photo below shows the tree planters posing with Mr Laureano B Lingan Jr, DENR Regional Executive Director. Hot goto and sandwich were waiting for the drenched planters after the activity.

RC Holy Spirit participates in District campaign to End Rabies in QC, Now Na!
The program of eradicating rabies in Quezon City was launched last Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Bulwagan Amoranto, Quezon City Hall as part of the World Rabies Day Celebration/Mission that is held every year on this date. The Task Force Lead Group drafted the initial stage of OPLAN Eradication of Rabies with the battle cry: END RABIES IN QC NOW NA! (which was coined by Rotarian AG Butch Madarang, chair of the Districts anti-rabies committee.) Launched simultaneously in 9 rabies-infected barangays, RC Holy Spirit officers coordinated the project in Barangay Batasan Hills. We were represented by AG Linda Palattao, SP Ped Condeno, Sec JR Delgra, and Interactors Rommel Pesimo and Aris Delgra.

What rabies is all about

(RCHS Research)

Rabies is a Latin word that means, "madness, rage, fury". Rabies virus causes acute inflammation of the brain. In non-vaccinated humans, rabies is almost invariably fatal after symptoms have developed, although prompt post-exposure vaccination may prevent the virus from progressing. Rabies impact can be controlled by vaccination. It can also be prevented by avoiding to be bitten by a mad dog or cat, or by an infected person. The Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 (Republic Act 9482) requires pet owners to have their dog regularly vaccinated, to report within 24 hours any dog biting incident, to assist the dog bite victim immediately, and to shoulder the medical expenses of the victim. The law imposes fines and imprisonment for certain acts of irresponsible pet ownership including refusal to have the dog vaccinated. Thus, anti-rabies vaccination does not only make sense; its required by law.

RI Presidents October Message

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,
In the pages of this months magazine, you will be introduced to the marvelous city of Bangkok, Thailand, which will play host to our 2012 Rotary International Convention. Please consider this my personal invitation to join me, my family, and our fellow Rotarians at what promises to be an incredible event in one of the worlds most fascinating locations. Thailand is a spectacular destination, truly the Land of a Thousand Smiles. I would particularly urge Rotarians who have never visited Thailand before to consider this as your chance. Youll be surrounded by gracious Rotarian hosts and friends, old and new, from around the world. Bangkok is a fantastic gateway for those wishing to explore Southeast Asia, and a wonderful experience on its own. For those who hail from countries closer by, take the opportunity to visit a major cultural capital, with all it has to offer including shopping, dining, and sightseeing. Indeed, Bangkok will give you a wonderful value for your time and money. But the very best reason to visit Bangkok, of course, will be the 2012 RI Convention itself, 6-9 May the highlight of the Rotary calendar. All through the year, we reach out to Rotary communities around the globe. At the convention, we have the chance to see all those communities represented in one place to hear all the languages, see all the people, and learn about all the projects of the past year. Nothing brings home the internationality of Rotary like a Rotary convention and nothing else has the same power to inspire. I firmly believe that every Rotary event should be a family event, and this is why Binota and I plan to bring our children and our grandchildren. Why not do the same, and make the Rotary convention part of your familys vacation next year? With so many wonderful events and activities to choose from, there is something for everyone, and plenty of opportunity to draw our families closer to our Rotary service. Every year, I go to the convention excited to see old friends and make new ones, to celebrate our successes and learn from our experiences. And every year, I leave with a sense of pride in Rotary, eager to begin another year of service. Bangkok promises to be the best convention yet. I urge you to register now at www.rotary.org/convention, and to begin planning your trip to our 103rd international convention!

Egypt club discovers the power of microlending

2011-10-05 13:01:59 "We gave loans to deprived women supporting large families," says past president Heba Kabel of RC Alexandria Sporting, Egypt. Club members made loans of about US$85 to 20 entrepreneurs to launch small food or cleaning businesses. The loans were paid back in instalments over the course of a year, and the money was then loaned out again -- turning the club's initial investment of about $1,700 into a sustainable microcredit program.

Vocational Service Month promotes business integrity, professional development

2011-10-03 10:06:13 Rotarians have two benchmarks for promoting professional integrity: The Four-Way Test and the Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions. "Rotary's Four-Way Test has served as an easy template for me in weighing the pros and cons of countless issues and decisions I've had to address over my career," says Paul Netzel, past RI Director. "It has helped make me a better Rotarian."

Rotarys support for polio eradication making a key difference

2011-09-28 13:19:14 Rotary has invested heavily in surveillance in India over the last 12 months, said Bruce Aylward, the World Health Organizations assistant director-general for polio eradication and related areas, at a midSeptember meeting of Rotarys International PolioPlus Committee. Thats the reason we can say with confidence that we think were getting close to zero [cases] in India.

Public is aware of Rotary, but unsure of what we do

2011-09-27 13:34:23 RI commissioned the survey of 1,000 individuals in each of six countries -- Argentina, Australia, Germany, Japan, South Africa, and the United States -- to gauge the general public's awareness and perception of the organization. The results are consistent with those of a similar survey conducted in 2006: While respondents had heard of Rotary, they did not know much about what it does.
