20 mothers in Payatas complete skills training in
manicure and pedicure techniques for livelihood
Last February 8, 2014, we launched the
project, Kamay at Paa Mo, Pagagandahin
Ko at Area B, Payatas, Quezon City. The
trainee-beneficiaries are the mothers of
children who participate in the reading,
arts and games activities being conducted
by RC Holy Spirit in that depressed area
of Payatas. Of 28 mothers who started
the course, 20 finished training held at the
Elite Business School compound owned
by LG/PP Linda Palattao for twelve Satur-
days. Mr. Pablito Rebay, a resident who
has a parlour in the vicinity, volunteered to
tutor the mothers. The graduation rites
were held last May 17,
2014. Rtn JR Delgra acted
as emcee while PE Marites
Nepomuceno and Rtn
Babes Bacula helped in the
distribution of Certificates of
Completion and manicure
kits donated by LG Linda.

School bags with school
supplies were also distrib-
uted to 75 children during
the occasion as practised
yearly by LG Linda.

Holy Spirit and 46 Rotary clubs join hands to distribute 20,000 books to needy schools
Sixty-seven elementary schools and thirty-six high
schools in Quezon City and in other parts of the country
will be recipients of textbooks and reference books pro-
vided by SM Foundation Inc (SMFI). The turn-over of
books to 47 participating Rotary clubs on May 19, 2014
at the Don Antonio Heights clubhouse in Barangay Holy
Spirit was organized by RC Holy Spirit which has a his-
tory of partnership and continuing collaboration with
SMFI.

It took two (2)
truckloads to haul
20,000 books and
pamphlets from
the SM ware-
house in Quiapo
district to the club-
house. The tasks
of sorting, batch-
ing and tagging
the books for
three (3) hot and
humid afternoons
fell on the hands
of Rotarians, Ro-
taractors and In-
teractors of Holy
Spirit. By May 19, the books were already organized
and ready to be turned over to the FCPs.

A very short program was prepared for the book distri-
bution activity by IPP
Marcia Salvador who
chaired the event. FCP Dr
Bong welcomed all the
FCPs and their represen-
tatives. DG Francis
Rivera came to congratu-
late all the participating
clubs in this literacy im-
provement initiative.

Present to assist the par-
ticipating clubs were PE
Marites Nepomuceno, LG/
PP Linda Palattao, Adm
Chair Ric Salvador, and
Rtns Percy Zabala, Chin
Chin Jurado and Jerry Sy.
Of course, the distribution
would not have been ex-
peditiously done were it
not for the hard-working
Rotaractors who even car-
ried the volumes of books
to waiting vehicles. What a concrete show of service
above self! The Interactors would have wanted to help,
too, but they were busy in their schools Brigada Esk-
wela activity. The trollies provided by PP Ped Condeno
and PN Angel Castro were a great help.

To Ms Connie Angeles, Executive Director of SMFI, go
our heartfelt thanks for the usual invaluable support.

To Omero Printgraphix, many thanks for the use of its
covered van in
hauling the books.

In addition to
helping raise liter-
acy level of stu-
dents in public
schools, this pro-
ject is considered
important by lead-
ers of RC Holy
Spirit because it is
part of the clubs
continuing rela-
tionship with SM
Foundation, and
because it pro-
vides opportunity
to work together
with a large number of clubs in the district in a meaning-
ful project that reaches a great number of needy benefi-
ciaries in the city and far-away towns.

Proportion of world population living on less than $1.25 a day has
been declining markedly: WORLD BANK on extreme poverty
What is the significance of this trend to Rotary clubs in the Philippines ?

The Object of Rotary
First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and
foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-
ticular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-
vice;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the digni-
fying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's per-
sonal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.
5 Avenues of Service
Based on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotarys phi-
losophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the
effective functioning of the club.

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their
vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club under-
takes to improve life in its community.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotarys
humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world under-
standing & peace.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth
and young adults through leadership development activities, service
projects, and exchange programs.
The Four-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
ROTARIANS PLEDGE
I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold the TRUTH.

I am a Rotarian
I will always strive to be FAIR
in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

I am a Rotarian
I will always endeavor to build
GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING
in my community,
among my countrymen
and people of all nations.

I am a Rotarian
I will always seek to promote
the greatest good
for the greatest number of people
in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.

I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold
the Rotary International Motto,
SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
Principles that Guide Rotary
As a Rotarian, I will
1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my
community

7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
