Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise warmly welcomes.....

District Governor Dr Raveendra Kumar

Presidents Message
Its October already, we have DG Dr. Raveendra Kumar gracing us with his presence & sharing a thought or two by way of advice for our club, Dr. Ravi, may I extend a very warm welcome from us all at RCBKS. This is the Vocational Month and we look forward to presenting our awards to three very deserving people on 15th October. The awardees, namely Dr. Goh Chee Leong (Vice President), Eric Amaladas (Director) & Bawany Chinapan (Lecturer) are all eminent professionals at The Help University College Faculty of Behavioural Sciences. Their contribution to our REF education program for youth leadership and development has been exceptional and has helped the pupils in many ways. Please join us on 15th to celebrate this event. It has our clubs/members privilege to work with you on REF. I am also delighted to welcome Peter Hill to the club and look forward to presiding over and inducting him to RC Bukit Kiara Sunrise on 8 th October, thanks must also go to VP James who introduced Peter to our team some months back. Peter, we look forward to working together with you as part of our team to help our community. World Polio Day, October 24th. Reach within and embrace humanity October is renowned in Rotary circles for the drive towards Polio Eradication Dr. Jonas Salk and his research team Yours in Rotary President Steve were responsible for the Polio Vaccine development. While there is still no actual cure for Polio, thanks to Dr. Jonas Salk there is a way to prevent it. Before Salk invented the vaccine, America was forced to live in fear of the infectious viral disease that put Franklin Roosevelt in a wheelchair. Polio attacks the nerve cells and sometimes the central nervous system, which can cause paralysis or even death. After being appointed head of the Virus Research Lab at the University of Pittsburg in 1947, Dr. Jonas Salk devoted himself to find a way to curb the devastating virus. Less than five years later, he invented the vaccine and decided to test it out. The impact was dramatic, in 1955 there were 28,985 cases in the USA and by 1957 this had been reduced to 5,894. We are still trying to defeat this disease today and we are close, please consider your contribution to RI this Rotary year to help close the final gap. Check out the RI website for updates on the fund objectives and progress, fund raising and awareness. (As of September, Rotarians have raised US$190million towards Rotarys US$200 Million Challenge, and to match the $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.)

October - Vocational Service Month
Vocational Service is the way Rotary fosters and supports the application of the ideal of service in the pursuit of all vocations. Inherent in the Vocational Service ideal are:

Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including faithfulness and fidelity to employers, employees and associates, and fair treatment of them and of competitors, the public and all those with whom one has any business of professional relationships. The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians. The contribution of one's vocational talents to the problems and needs of the community.

Included as part of Vocational Service is The Four-Way Test. The Four-Way Test was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, who later became president of Rotary International.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? 4) Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship 5) Recognize the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society 6) Offer my vocational talents to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community 7) Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession 8) Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship Our Club in recognising the Psychology Dept. of HELP Institute for their services in training our Mentors of the REF will be presenting them with the Vocaional Service Award. Rotary Information
District Conference
Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference, which means they have not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership. A district conference is for all club members in the district and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of the district conference is to provide opportunities for networking, inspirational addresses, and discussions of Rotary-related matters. The event should recognize the service programs, projects, and public relations achievements in the district in order to inspire Rotarians to become more involved in service. The conference should also give Rotarians and clubs a vision of Rotary beyond the club level and provide a memorable fellowship experience. Many Rotarians have said that they were never truly enthusiastic about Rotary until they saw an inspirational presentation at a district conference. Every Rotary district has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs. One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one's own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference. ..... excerpt from The ABCs of Rotary
