The 4 - Way Test
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is The 4 - Way Test. It was created by Rotarian Herbert Taylor in 1932 when he asked to take charge of the Chicagobased Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy. Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression - caused financial difficulties. He drew up 24-word code ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The 4 Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy. Herb Taylor became president of Rotary International during 1954-55. The 4 - Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways. The 4 Way Test Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Presidents Message
April Fools? hopefully not lah! Most of us are planning travels for this year, we have had some excellent tours and speakers, Peter Hill took us around Europe past and present, and last week our Charter President Naga took us on a breathtaking route to Mt. Kailash, the holy mountain in Western Tibet. I am looking forward to what I am sure is to be an excellent tour of Israel courtesy of our very own Rotarian Cecelia. Our Rotary calendar this month is Community & we continue to serve the community through the REF program with a Study Skills workshop this Saturday at Jamess office in Kelana Jaya. Very well done James for setting this up, and I am very pleased to hear that we have Retired Principal Ong to help our students with this program. This is also RYLA month, the dates are 26,27,28,29th April at the Police Academy in KL, just off Tun Razak. We need at least 2 recommendations, student between the ages of 19 to 25. Our club has the responsibility for receiving and managing applications and the enrolment process on the first day of RYLA. Thank you Ghaurry for volunteering your office to receive these applications and Karen for helping cover this event, and very well done for Susan who is heading this team and just back from oseas, has jumped right back into the action with a meeting earlier this week hosted by our AG Siti. Finally we have a wonderful schedule of speakers for the remainder of this year, especially our special guest this Saturday Mr. Robert Hamilton, so please support us this Saturday and right through April. If you have any contacts who can contribute with interesting and insightful topics for our club, please let me know. And dont forget yourself, we all have amazing stories and information to share, so dont be shy. Some Rotary updates from the RI website - What would it take to change the world? REF News
Documentation for smooth transition, replicability and scalability RCBKS recognises that due to the challenges of manageability and resource constraints, due to available mentors, the maximum number of students (awardees) we can realistically take on is about 20-30 at any one time. Therefore the biggest positive impact to the community from establishing the REF will come from sharing the REF templates with other organizations to replicate the project. With this in mind, all critical processes of the REF are documented in detail, ensuring proper quality control of the documents. This allows replicability and scalability of the project and processes with a high degree of consistency. Good documentation will also facilitate the smooth transition and succession of committee members working on the project. MOU with RC Seremban breaks ground 1 March 2012 RCBKS is currently assisting the Rotary club of Seremban to start a Rotary Education Fund based on the same principles. We are glad to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to this effect was signed with the Seremban club on 1 March 2012.

Around the Rotary World

A Lesson in Recycling
Most of us think recycling means tossing a soda can or newspaper into the proper bin. But the Rotary Club of London, Ont., is taking the concept to a new level: Its recycling schools. After the January 2010 earthquake devastated much of Haiti, the London club began collecting desks, chairs, bookshelves, and other supplies from Canadian schools that were closing, then shipping the items to Haiti. And because recycling a school is a logistical puzzle, this massive project involves a close partnership with the Rotary Club of PtionVille, Haiti, along with contributions from Rotary clubs and districts in four countries; support from the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund; a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant; and dozens of volunteers donating hundreds of hours. London club members came up with the idea when they discovered that their local school district would be closing about 20 schools over the next several years because of low enrollment. The district had begun giving away the contents of the schools and was more than happy to have Rotarians make use of them. Its surplus furniture. We have no need for it and no facility to store it, says Paul Tufts, superintendent of education for the Thames Valley District School Board and a member of the London club. Its good news for everybody. Past RI Director John Eberhard, also a member of the London club, reached out to the Ption-Ville club to partner on the project. Ption-Ville Rotarians identified two heavily damaged primary schools in need of assistance. The effort fit well with the goal of rebuilding schools, identified by the Haiti Task Force, a group of Rotarians helping to channel funds to Haiti.
