THE USE OF ICT IN MATHEMATICS TEACHING AND LEARNING

Question 1: Give examples on the types of teaching and learning of primary

Mathematics that are related to the use of ICT.

Listed below are some examples that can be applied in a wide variety of Mathematics
topics:

• Mathematics CD Roms that are relevant to the Mathematics syllabus. Teachers

must be selective.

• Interactive Teaching Program (ITP) is a program that can be easily obtained from
the internet. It prepares the necessary resources for many Mathematics topics. The
program (the selected resources) is being delivered through mediums such as
interactive whiteboards and PowerPoint presentations. The program consists of
activities that involve students’ participation, hence the word “interactive”. Below
are some screenshots from the ITP.
• Appropriate games (PC, downloaded, online, etc) that are relevant to the syllabus.

• LO (Learning Object) which is a compilation of resources associated with a topic to

be taught. Almost similar to the CD Rom.

• Mathematics-related videos from websites such as www.teachertube.com.

Listed below are some examples of the types of teaching-learning using ICT that are
broken down into specific areas of Mathematics content:

1. Geometry (Shape & Space)

• Geometer sketchpad- to draw shapes, angles, finding areas, perimeters etc.

• Online drawing tools such as those that can be found in these websites:

http://www.imaginationcubed.com

These drawing tools are similar to the program “Paint”. However, these tools
have the “Grid” option and also, the teacher can “replay” all the drawings that
have been done.

• Using Pixies software. (another alternative to Paint) Below is a screenshot of

Pixies.
2. Number pattern

• Students can be asked to complete number patterns in cells or spreadsheets in

Microsoft Excel. The teacher may set the Excel to identify correct and incorrect
answers. This saves time in marking.

3. Statistics

• Data representation activities using charts, tables and graphs are available from
Microsoft Words,Excel and PowerPoint.

4. Fractions

• Using Maths Type 5/6, which is similar to Microsoft Equation Editor but it is a much
better software.

5. Numerical identification (inc. knowing of numbers, multiples, place values, number

lines etc)

• Using interactive place value charts where each number being entered or keyed
in, will be automatically shown the place value of the digits.
6. Multiplication

• Interactive multiplication grid. See attached document.

7. Mensuration (Area, Perimeter, Volume)

• PC LOGO

• 2D shape creation software which allows the teacher and the students to easily
draw 2D shapes on the screen.

• Video clips to show 3D shapes when the actual solid is not available.

8. Speed

• Using typing tutor or Microsoft Word. The activity can be in the form of calculating
the number of letters that can be types in a specific span of time.

9. Word problems

• When students do not understand English very well, it helps a lot to have some
animations alongside word problem questions.
