SLG 201 PRESENTATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS 1. PRESENTATIONS : ASL Storytelling TBA A.

Role Shift (unit 18) The story will be last in 2 minutes B. Accident (unit 21) The story will be last in 2 minutes C. Short stories (unit 18 and 21) (I will give you the instruction later) Each student will do each story in each unit at time.

The students will be videotaped at home. No papers are allowed during the evaluation except the presentation on percentage and comparison. You may hand in your VHS/DVD/CD. If you have MAC computer, please let me know. If you hand in your video story late, you will lose 5 points on each class day. Please dress in modest attire. Please wear solid or plain color of shirt. Be sure that your shirt is the opposite color of your skin. E. g. black and olive skin /light color of shirt. White skin/dark color of shirt. It is easier to read your signing on the video. Please make sure that your background is less distracting at home. Also be sure your video is bright.

C. Test : Facts and Classifiers (Your teacher will videotape the students.) Whole- part, Comparison and Listing (unit 19) 2. Deaf Activity or Deaf movie Paper : Deadline: September 30th The papers are required about the recent activity or any deaf movie but not previous activities. Lose 5 points on each day for handing it in late. Be sure you get approval from your instructor before you go to any activity or choose any movie. You are required either go to the activity or see the movie. The paper has to be typed in one page. Tell me about your new experience or feeling about the activity or the movie. Also tell what are good about it or what you learn about it. Also tell me what you learn about ASL or deaf culture at an event or on the movie. If you want to do the paper on movie, it can be on DVD or videotape movie or movie TV or maybe movie theatre. The movie has to be about deaf people. E.g. Maybe deaf family or deaf school or anything that relates to deaf environment. Please check with me first 2./ 3. FINAL ASL PRESENTATION(FINAL EXAM): October 12 and 14.

Project Outline papers and the Presentation: Due date: October 12 and 14. (depending on the time and numbers of students) The Projects are mostly about Deaf Culture/Deaf Community or the topics are related to deaf issues. Each student will do the project paper and also will do the presentation on your project. Please dont choose other topic than the list of topic. E.g, Helen Keller or ASL class or deaf events. When you decide to choose the topic that you will do on the project, please sign your name on the list of the topic. The student whoever signs his/her name will come first to last. A. PROJECT Outlines PAPERS: The outline paper has to be in one full page. You must hand in the outline paper before or after the presentation. 2 or more resources are required. The resources can be book, magazine, internet and interview deaf people. Please be sure you use Time New Roman print. You only expand the information on your presentation. B. PRESENTATION: The presentation has to be visual E.g. pictures or objects, power point etc. The students who give their presentation are allowed to use the papers to help them to remember the information. The presentation will run in 10 minutes. I will videotape their presentations in class. Asking the student who gives their presentation is not allowed. During the presentation, the students may show a short movie or slides but at the same time, they have to explain what it is about. It means that we will not watch the whole movie or slide without giving the presentation at the whole time because it will affect your grade. You are not allowed to interpret for the movie. I will grade on: Clear ASL structure: proper word order Introduction and conclusion: clear beginning and end. Non-manual markers: topic or rhetorical question or other. Creativity : show motivation, picture, drawing etc Well organized: good timing of presentation, preparation of speech Clear comprehension of information and expanding the information:

1. Martha Vineyard: There were so many deaf people on the Martha Vineyard (most deaf lived in Chilmark) that residents developed a sign language. 2. Thomas Gallaudet : Reverend Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, LL.D., was a renowned American pioneer in the education of the deaf. 3. Clerc Laurent : Laurent Clerc was America's first deaf teacher. Laurent Clerc (1785-1869) is known for his pioneering work in deaf education. 4. William

Hoy: He was the first deaf baseball player.

5. Deaf Education : It can be about schools or communications that affect education, education from home/schools etc. It has to be about Deaf Education. 6. Bilingual Program: The research is based on ASL/English written program which is bilingual. 7. William

8. Interview Deaf Peoples Life Experience.: Interviewing at least two deaf people are required. The person has to be culturally deaf /deaf. You may either share the persons name with his/her permission. 9. Deaf Culture: Deaf people share a language, rules for behavior, values, and traditions. 10. Deaf Sports or Events: Deaf sports may be Olympic or deaf world or deaf sports or other various events that related to deaf.

11. History of ASL: American Sign Language has only been acknowledged as a
true language in the latter part of the twentieth century, but the language's roots date back to eighteenth century France. ASL borrows from FSL (French Sign Lanugage).

12. Deaf Technology: Both or Either of History of technology and today technology. E.g door bell, videophone, flashing light etc.
