Catch the beat. The New Brookland Jazzers perform as part of the Sunday Jazz series at Senates End.

Hot jazz down by the river

Story by Rachel Haynie, Special to Lake Murray/Northeast Magazine Photographs by Gerry Melendez music professor, teaching saxophone and clarinet at Presbyterian College. Around tables at Senates End, audience members from throughout the area some driving in from Cameron, St. Matthews and Chapin may order brunch dishes from the restaurants weekly-changing menu. Others just drift in as the sun begins its arc into the river and the music begins. Borgstedt had an organization such as this in the back of his mind when he returned to Columbia following his retirement. While he was away making military music at West Point and playing saxophone with the U. S. Military Academys Jazz Knights, Columbia was acquiring a more defined taste for the originally American music form. The timing seemed right. Still, the former Dreher High School student who first fell for the saxophone in middle school, tested the local waters for several years to assess whether Columbia was hungry enough for a weekly dose of jazz before rounding up some of the areas top musicians. Borgstedt realized jazz had many more local followers than it had when he went off to launch his career as a professional

azz in Columbia has a new permanent home at Senates End, at a river-view environment off Huger Street that provides support, food on tables, positive influences and encouragement in the form of applause. While Bryson Borgstedt, founder of Think Jazz Columbia, is the initiatives natural patriarch, he has many others shouldering creative responsibility with him. From his practice studio at his Irmo home, he checks in with core band members to assure their availability then schedules the educational and jam sessions. The seven other musicians comprising the collective are Roger Pemberton, Drew Loeffler, Jim Mings, Jenna McSwain, Reggie Sullivan, Mitch Butler and Marc Widenhofer. Following the core groups opening numbers, the afternoon gives way to guest performances, featuring individuals or entire jazz bands from area and regional institutions. Affording young jazz musicians opportunities to play especially in context with these experienced talents is as important to our mission as performing and building audience interest in jazz, said Borgstedt, in his second year as adjunct

musician. While I was away, the University of South Carolina, from which I earned both my bachelors degree and a masters degree in commercial music and jazz, had been building an enviable reputation for its jazz programming, he said. Also, most of the area high school bands have established jazz ensembles, so interest and knowledge of jazz has proliferated. To advance the educational component of the groups mission, Borgstedt is signing up school jazz groups for weekly appearances. As a music educator, I feel so good about being able to offer our young musicians a Sunday afternoon venue for their talent so that they, nor their families, have to frequent a bar for that playing experience. Sunday afternoons also are when top local jazz musicians are available, so the chance for our young jazz musicians to hear and sit in with veteran musicians makes this an ideal educational situation. hen Randy and Valerie Skinner moved into their 4,000-square-foot, 12-year-old Lake Murray home 10 years ago, they simply placed their existing furniture where they felt it needed to be and dove into busy careers. Randy is an attorney with a law practice in Greenville, while Valerie is an obstetrician and gynecologist in Lexington. Over those 10 years, the couple had two children, now eight and six. The Skinners looked around one day and decided they needed help with their home. Colors, fixtures and furnishings were dated. When they are home together, Randy and Valerie both enjoy cooking. They needed a more work-friendly kitchen. They like to entertain other families with children, but the rooms needed a better flow and feel. Since they live on the lake, they also felt they wanted a more retreat-like atmosphere for overnight guests.

... and after.

Valerie Skinner, left, chats with Limehouse about one of her rooms during a visit as she works through a full remodel of the Skinners home. Recently completed, the main living room now has clean lines and monochromatic fabrics to create a transitional style. The new Persian area rug grounds this space while new ottomans create additional seating.

However, because of their busy lives, they dreaded a time-stealing project. Enter Kelli Limehouse of Limehouse Home Interiors. She was recommended to Valerie. Thirteen years ago, Limehouse designed her own home on Lake Murray. Eight years ago, the empty-nester decided she loved home decorating so much that she started her own business. The bulk of her clientele is on or near the lake, but she also works on all types of projects in and around Columbia.

Their [Skinners] home had good bones, says Limehouse, but it needed updating. Limehouse developed an initial plan to overhaul the master bathroom, great room and kitchen. Work often took place when the Skinners were at work or on extended vacations so there would be minimal disruptions to their lives. Careful planning resulted in quick, efficient completion of each project. Kelli made it so easy, says Valerie. We gave her a small project first to get a feel for how she worked and how

we would work together. Valerie says Limehouse achieved exactly what she was thinking. For the great room, muted blues, creams and mochas replaced darker hues. The rooms facelift included Benjamin Moores Muslin on the walls, which extend to a vaulted ceiling with large windows overlooking the lake. Wood floors were re-sanded and re-stained. Limehouse found the perfect rug in High Point, N.C., at a home furnishings market. She also located a substantial oil painting to serve as a focal point over

The kitchen after... Kelli Limehouse added intricate glass and marble tile and new counters to the Skinners kitchen. It was a complete makeover with new cabinets and lighting as well. The cabinets are solid cherry with a special stain created for the Skinners. the fireplace; colors are more of intense palette, adding new pops of color to the room. The custom-ordered furniture made of durable but plush fabrics includes a sectional with a chaise, upholstered footstools, and coordinating upholstered chairs. The centerpiece is a large, tufted, leather ottoman. Although the Skinners considered themselves traditional decorators, Limehouses selections leaned more toward transitional. Upholstery has clean, soft lines, while a new console along one wall has large silver pulls. Atop the console are distinct abalone shell lamps with linen shades. She pushed us to think more transitional in our dcor, says Valerie, and I think it not only brings a fresh look to the house, but its more kidfriendly as well. The master bathroom was gutted to remove white tile on pressed wood, brass fixtures, and outdated lighting. Now there are custom cabinets undermount sinks and granite tops. A frameless glass

shower has a new tile floor. Limehouse left an existing tile medallion in the middle of the floor; paintings of colorful pastoral and marsh scenes coordinate with the colors in the medallion. A novel chandelier and matching sconces with smoky teardrop pendants finish the room. To add contrast to the master bath, Limehouse had the walls painted a pale blue. She then muted the color to onehalf its original hue in order to paint the vaulted ceiling. This effect gives a room contrast, but softness at the same time, she says. This room definitely has an elegance it didnt have before, says Valerie. Its very inviting. While Limehouse also redid a half bath off the kitchen and refreshed a guest room with new furnishings and soothing colors, it was the kitchen that was the largest undertaking. Gutted to the walls, the kitchen now boasts custom cabinets stained chocolate and glazed in ebony. They extend to the ceiling, which Limehouse says is a technique that gives the illusion of more height in a room. The top section of the cabinets serve as a lighted, glassed display

space. The peninsula was extended to provide enough room for four leather barstools to fit comfortably. The cooktop was

moved from the centerpiece island to the countertop so that the Skinners would have a large prep and serving area. New granite was added to all the counterspace, the island and the peninsula. At the peninsula are storage areas for childrens homework. Valerie calls this her command center. Instead of doors that open out and take up space, Limehouse designed pocket doors to stay out of the way. Bringing an original, modern look to the kitchen is the glass and marble combination backsplash in a horizontal pattern mosiac. On the cabinets are long, sleek, stainless steel pulls. There is also a creative lighting fixture over the square custom-made dining table. The fixture has recycled blown glass circles hanging from an iron sculptural frame. Over the sink is a coordinating fixture. All new lighting fixtures chosen by Limehouse are by Curry and Company. The square table includes six upholstered chairs in a linen-like fabric with nailhead trim, while a water and stain-proof Sunbrella print covers a settee for additional seating. The dining table is situated in front of an almost floor-toceiling bay window overlooking the lake. An adjacent door opens to an expansive

deck with a grill. Woven wood custom blinds that separate in areas to block out specific pockets of sun give the space an organic feel. Valerie says the kitchen space is more practical for their everyday lives, and it comfortably accommodates multiple guests. After the project was completed, they hosted an event with over 100 people. The Skinners say their association with Limehouse isnt over. They plan to eventually redo his office, their foyer and dining room, their daughters bedroom and the play room. All of the recent renovation was completed with little interruption to their hectic lives. For a very short time, they moved into a nearby condo in Lexington for the main destruction of the existing kitchen. For a few weeks, they cooked out of their laundry room, which they turned into a kitchen. Mostly it was a smooth process and we would just come home some days and be surprised at what Kelli had accomplished, says Valerie. Deena Bouknight is a Midlands-based freelance writer.

Home improvement checklist

Check the condition of your roof. The National Roofing Contractors Association suggests you check for these signs of wear and tear on the roof: o Shingles that are buckling, curling or blistering; this indicates the end of the shingles life expectancy. o Loose material or wear around chimneys, pipes and other penetrations. o Excessive amounts of shingle granules in your gutters; granules give shingles added weight and protect them from ultraviolet rays. o Head inside as well to check the interior of your attic for signs of mold or leakage that can compromise the roof. Consider some curb appeal upgrades. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that new styles of exterior doors are much more efficient than even doors from 20 years ago. A new door can have the look of wood but be durable, safe and energy efficient. Also see whether your driveway needs updating, either with upgraded materials or with updated landscaping. Now is the time to assess your lawns health. You might have the wrong type of lawn for your turf. The Clemson Extension Service offers these tips on assessing what is best. o What type of lawn is desired or expected? Decide if the lawn is to be a showplace, an average lawn, or just a cover to lessen soil erosion. o What level of maintenance will the lawn be given? Levels of maintenance are closely related to cost and time, with high-maintenance turf costing the most and

Now that the seasons are changing, its time to think about spring projects. Consult this checklist to determine what you need to do.
taking the most time to maintain. o Are there any physical or environmental limitations to the planting site? Quality turf requires irrigation, so water quantity and quality are a selection factor. o Can the area be easily mowed? Soil type, pH, drainage, and other soil characteristics are important. The amount of shade the turf will receive can limit the selection of suitable grasses. o Consider your geographical location in terms of temperature extremes. Certain grasses do best in hot environments while others prefer cooler environments. Assess what your needs are (and what might change). If you plan to live in your home as you age, weigh these factors into any remodeling project, says the National Association of Home Builders, which advocates universal design. o No-step entry. No one needs to use stairs to get into a universal home or into the homes main rooms. o One-story living. Places to eat, use the bathroom and sleep are all located on one level, which is barrierfree. o Wide doorways. Doorways that are 32-36 inches wide let wheelchairs pass through. They also make it easy to move big things in and out of the house. o Wide hallways. Hallways should be 36-42 inches wide. That way, everyone and everything moves more easily from room to room. o Extra floor space. Everyone feels less cramped. And people in wheelchairs have more space to turn.

ight next to the handsome mutt of a house on a Lake Murray cove stands a condo full of some of the most precious purebreds in these parts. Officially, its Hollow Creek Kennel. Unofficially, its Boykin spaniel central. On any given day, you might find a dozen or more chocolate-colored beauties swarming around Patricia Watts as she walks through her 2.4 acres on the western edge of the lake near the Lexington-Saluda county line. The dogs especially love to jump off her dock to retrieve orange training bumpers. They arent the most aerodynamic of pooches, but they look like theyre having so much fun when they soar through the air with their ears and tongues flapping in the breeze. And they swim with the determination that makes them great hunting retrievers. Boykins are the state dog, descended from a little brown spaniel who followed a Spartanburg banker home one day in the early 1900s. Theyre that justright size and have that just-right temperament, making for a breed thats easy to love. About 30 years ago, Watts teenage son came home from the Palmetto Sportsmans Classic asking to borrow $300 to buy a Boykin. She didnt know anything about the breed, so she returned to the State Fairgrounds with her son. I looked in that puppys eyes, and there was something looking back at me that Id never seen before in a dog, a

for her Boykins. With four at home, she had reached the dog limit allowed in her Elgin neighborhood. While helping her son look for a new home, she happened upon a listing for a house and large lot on the lake. The listing was so new, it included no photo, but she thought the large lot might be ideal for a breeding kennel. I walked in the door and knew I had to have it, Watts said of the house, which had been put together by a builder with scraps from other projects. It was a hodge-podge, but I saw so many possibilities. A registered nurse, Watts moved from Augusta to the Midlands in 1977 to work at Richland Memorial Hospital, as it was then called. Somehow, she found time to manage her own businesses a day spa and a company that developed products for the nuclear industry. These days, most of that energy is focused on Boykins. While slowly renovating the lake house, Watts built a large kennel for her Boykin breeding operation next to her home. (Unable to limit her entrepreneurial spirit to one entity, she also opened a pet boarding kennel, Palmetto Pet Lodge in Gilbert.) She makes every effort to ensure her dogs avoid problem traits and have the best versions of the traits that make Boykins

special. Boykins often have hip dysplasia and juvenile cataracts. No dogs with juvenile cataracts will be bred in her operation, and only those with a minimal history of hip problems are bred, and only with mates who have a history of strong hips. Females are bred to have only four litters. The results have been exceptional. With the Boykin in recent years becoming an American Kennel Clubrecognized breed, many show champions trace their lineage to Hollow Creek Kennel. Even more of her dogs are simply family pets or working hunting dogs. (The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Associations first AKC spaniel hunt test is scheduled March 3-4 in Richburg.) Watts keeps her waiting list for puppies between 10 and 20, and the wait can be as long as a year. Thats despite a $200 non-refundable deposit and the $1,200 to $1,500 price tag. Among those who have bought Boykins from Watts are comedian

Stephen Colbert and outdoors show host Joey Mines, she said. Watts usually breeds for two litters each year. She recently bred two Hollow Creek show champs, her own Belle and Kingfisher, who is owned by a client in Charleston. Belle had 10 puppies in January, and while two didnt survive, the other eight were doing well after two weeks. The puppies start swimming at five

weeks and start tracking with their noses at seven weeks. Watts turns the dogs over to their owners at 8 weeks, which she feels is the ideal bonding period. I dont do anything haphazard, she said. Belle and her eight puppies got to stay in the house those first few weeks, while the rest of the crew Sophie, Frog, Peaches, Santee, Roxy, Gigi, Ruby, Emma, Bootsie, Penny, Cocoa and Jessie

stayed out in the kennel. Santee is a great hunting dog, but he has a peculiar habit of bringing back two birds to the hunter and taking a third bird for himself, hiding it in the woods. Hunts with Santee usually end with a trek through the woods to find his hidden treasure. Bootsie was featured in the Canadian version of Readers Digest to illustrate a story about Boykins. Frog (short for Frogmore) is an especially lively character, somehow befitting his curlier than normal coat. Roxie and Ruby are certified hospital therapy dogs. Tuckered out after a walk and a swim in the lake on a warm January day, the dogs each returned to the door to their enclosures, eager to relax inside what Watts calls the dog condominium. Its a long row of covered, chain-link enclosures some housing one dog, some two. Their small houses have heaters for the winter and fans for the summer. When Watts doesnt have newborn puppies in the house, she often finds three or four in her home at any one time. And if they all want in, say during a thunderstorm, they get their way. My vet bill is bigger than my mortgage, Watts said. And thats because I take good care of my dogs.
