Richard "Dick" Fenzel | Visit Guest Book

FENZEL, RICHARD "DICK," 89, died peacefully at home on November 28, 2011, surrounded by his loving family He was born in Mount Vernon, KY on May 27, 1922 and attended high school at Cave City, where he led his basketball team to the 1940 state tournament with his legendary two handed "set shot." He enrolled in Western Kentucky University, but enlisted in the U.S. Army after World War II began. He served in Europe and attained the rank of sergeant. For many years after the war, he and his wife Alene, attended Army reunions where the soldiers would tell and retell the stories of their adventures in Europe. He worked at the L&N Railroad for 30 years as an assistant train master and train dispatcher at Corbin, Northern Kentucky, Harlan, Elizabethtown and Louisville. Dick was an active member of Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, where he previously served as Elder and Deacon. He also enjoyed his memberships with the St. Matthews V.F.W. and American Legion Posts. Dick loved sports, politics, travel, books and never stopped learning. He led a healthy and active life biking, walking and playing tennis. He and Alene traveled the world, and visited all 50 states. He spent many Tuesday evenings at the St. Matthews City Council meeting putting in his "two cents" on issues affecting his community as well as being influential in many St. Mathews improvements. But nothing gave him greater joy than sharing in the lives and "goings on" of his grandchildren. He will be missed by his family and many friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Verna; and his brother, Jack. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Alene; his daughter, Gail (John); his son, Mark (Ann); six grandchildren, Matt, Chris, Gwen, Katie, Ally and Mark; and a sister, Peggy (Ernest). His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2011 at Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church, 311 Browns Lane with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Highlands FamilyOwned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hosparus or Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church. Special thanks to the staff of Hosparus, who provided hospice care and support that allowed him to stay in the home he loved so much.
