BEAT LA: The Padres and Dodgers continue their four-game series to open the season tonight, with Dustin Moseley and Chris Capuano each taking the hill for their 2012 debuts...the four-game series marks the first of six matchups against the Dodgers, including a three-game set to begin the Padres first road trip (4/13-15)...the Dodgers next visit to Petco Park will be 5/16-17 for a two-game series. LAST TIME OUT: The Padres dropped a 6-0 decision to the Dodgers at the hands of Chad Billingsleys 8.1 innings of shutout ball last night...Cameron Maybin, Will Venable (double) and Jesus Guzman (double) tallied the only hits for the San Diego...following 4.2 innings of work by starter Cory Luebke, Micah Owings worked 3.1 innings of scoreless releif...Owings allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two...Andrew Cashner made his 2012 debut, working 1.0 scoreless frame. ON THE HILL: Dustin Moseley makes his first start of the season tonight...originally signed by the Padres as a free agent following the 2010 campaign, he had a breakout year in 2011, setting career highs in starts, innings, ERA and strikeouts...he began the year in the starting rotation, making six quality starts out of the gate...he finished the year with a 3-10 record despite posting a 3.30 ERA that ranked second among Padres starters (Luebke, 3.29). BULLYING PEN: San Diego relievers have combined to allow just two runs (one two-run homer) over their 8.1 innings of work in the first two games of the season...over the two games, Anthony Bass (2.0), Ernesto Frieri (1.0), Micah Owings (3.1) and Andrew Cashner (1.0) have each worked scoreless ball...the Padres bullpen has limited the Dodgers to a .185 clip (5-for-27) with six strikeouts. THINKING A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLUE: The Padres today will don their new blue alternate uniforms for the first time...expected to be the standard Saturday attire for the 2012 season at Petco Park, the uniforms feature white piping around the neck and down the front of the jersey, with the Padres SD on the chest...unlike the blue uniforms worn last year, these alternates can be worn with both the white or gray pants, meaning they will be used occassionally for road games as well...the blue alternate features the clubs new secondary logo, Padres script under skyline imagery of Petco Park, in a patch on the left sleeve. ROSTER ROUND-UP: The Padres Thursday placed RHP Tim Stauffer on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson...in addition, the club announced on Tuesday that they had selected OF Jeremy Hermida from Triple-A Tucson, placed OF Carlos Quentin (right knee) and INF/OF Mark Kotsay (right calf) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brad Brach and INF Everth Cabrera to Triple-A Tucson...the clubs Opening Day roster featured nine right-handed pitchers, three left-handed pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielderssix players made their first appearance on a Major League teams Opening Day roster, including RHPs Anthony Bass and Brad Brach and INFs Yonder Alonso, Jesus Guzman and Andy ParrinoINF Logan Forsythe, who began the season on the disabled list, was also considered on an Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. WILLING AND ABLE: Will Venable hit .349 (22-for-63) this Spring with seven doubles and nine stolen baseshe led the squad in both stolen bases and doubleshis hit total ranked second on the team behind Yonder Alonso (24)V oenable posted a .417 on-base percentage and .460 slugging percentage for an .877 OPS this Spring. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the clubs Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the clubs history. SPRING TRAINING RECAP: The Padres wrapped up Spring Training with a 20-16 record, ranking fourth in the Cactus League, second among National League clubs and first among their NL West rivals...the club finished the Spring slate by winning 17 of their final 26 games...at the conclusion of Spring Training, the Padres led all NL clubs in runs scored, home runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage...they topped all Major League teams in slugging percentage and runs scored...leading the way were seven players on the current roster who finished the Spring with a batting average of .300 or better, including Nick Hundley (.432), Will Venable (.349), Kyle Blanks (.325), Chris Denorfia (.323), Yonder Alonso (.312), Jesus Guzman (.308) and Jeremy Hermida (.306). WHAT A RELIEF: The eight Padres relievers named to the clubs Opening Day roster combined to go 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA (35 ER/85.1 IP) this Spring...their performance was led by stellar Springs from RHP Andrew Cashner (10.0 IP) and LHP Joe Thatcher (9.1 IP), who each allowed just one run over the course of the Cactus League slate...the two relievers also averaged over a strikeout per inning pitched, with Cashner tallying 16 and Thatcher collecting 10.
