Where in the World Activity

Grade Level: Fourth Overview and Purpose This is a lesson plan that is designed to incorporate social studies, reading, and physical education all in one lesson. Students will be preforming in front of two certified teachers on their knowledge when finished. The purpose of this activity is to broaden students minds to be culturally diverse and to be more accepting of their peers. Students will also be physically active during the process. Subject(s): Reading, Language Arts, Physical Education Education Standards Addressed Standards met for 4th grade Social Studies: 4.SS.2.1.2: Show on a map of the world the continents, oceans, landforms, poles, hemispheres, equator, and prime meridian. (442.01b) 4.SS.2.1.1: Use geographic skills to collect, analyze, interpret, and communicate data. (442.01a) Standards met for 4th grade Language Arts: 4.LA.1.8.3 Use words and concepts necessary for comprehending math, science, social studies, literature and other Grade 4 content area text. 4.LA.1.8.4 Use a grade-level appropriate dictionary and glossary to define and confirm meaning of unknown words. (707.05.a) 4.LA.1.7.1 Read aloud grade-level-appropriate test with fluency and accuracy from at least 140 correct words per minute (Hasbrouck & Tindal). 4.LA.2.1.3 Draw conclusions based on information gathered from text. (707.01.o) 4.LA.2.2.4 Follow multi-step written directions. Standards met for 4th grade Physical Education: 3-5.PE.1.1.1 Apply fundamental, non-locomotor, locomotor, and manipulative skills in dynamic and complex movements (e.g., games, dance, educational gymnastics, etc.). 3-5.PE.1.1.2 Demonstrate mature movements using concepts of effort, relationships, and body and space awareness. 3-5.PE.1.1.3 Demonstrate a wide variety of specialized skills (e.g., passing a ball, softball fielding, defensive sliding, grapevine dance step, rollerblading heel stop, bicycle signaling, etc.)

Teachers Guide
Objectives (Specify skills/information that will be learned) For social studies: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify at least two countries and which sport is the countries sport of choice. For reading: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to pronounce two countries they did not know previously. For physical education: By the end of this lesson, students will improve both their upper bodies and lower bodies and demonstrate a sport specific to a country. For students: Students will increase self-confidence by using partners to read out loud, find countries on a map accurately, and perform a sport. Students will have fun learning new words and playing sports. For the community: Students will collaborate with each other to perform a sport. Students may use this skill at recess or to show neighbors in their area. Skills taken from this activity can be applied elsewhere. Students will pair off into twos. Each pair will take turns going up to the front of the room to draw two cards from the deck which have countries on them. The students have 10 minutes before they must start their sport. The students will read about the first card they draw and then the student will have to go to the map (which will be placed around the room or outside randomly) and accurately point out where the country is on which continent. Students will then have to go to area where Materials Needed Where in the World game Pencils/Pens Balls (soft, like a Nerf ball or yarn ball, also a hard one like a kickball or four-square ball) Racquet or bat (can be a home-made one, depending on students ability. Modifications may be included) Net or basket, like a trash can Yarn or tape Depending upon which countries are chosen, there may be more or less materials needed. Be sure there are enough materials for every student in the class, so fights will not be started.

Information (Give and/or demonstrate necessary information)

Other Resources Papers that have the countries main sport and the explanation of how to play Space (may need to move the desks out of the way or, if possible, go outside) Dictionaries

Verification (Steps to check for student understanding)

the papers are that tell about each countries favorite sport. The pairs will have to find their country and read, out loud, to their partners (switch partners for the next country) about their sport. Students will have dictionaries provided to look up any words they do not know or words they cannot pronounce. The students will then have to get the required materials (ex: a ball, a racquet, etc.) and find a big enough space. The students will then spend approximately 10 minutes playing the sport, then switch to the second country. The teacher and the aide will be going around while students are doing the activity to ask questions such as: What country are you learning about and what sport you are performing here? They may also ask such questions as: Which muscle groups are you working when performing this sport? The teacher an aide should also be asking the students if they can point out their specific countries on a map.

Additional Notes There is a certified teachers aide that will be helping with this activity. There is a student who has ADHD in the classroom. This student will be kept busy with their partner performing the required tasks. The student will also be staying on task because their partner will be there to help them. There is also a student in the classroom that has a hearing impairment. He/she has a cochlear implant so he/she can hear, just not very well. This student will work closely with their partner and their partner will be aware that they must face the student with a hearing impairment when speaking, and they must enunciate their words. This student with the hearing impairment will also be able to read what is being asked of them and have visual, rather than just auditory instructions.

Activity (Describe the independent activity to reinforce this lesson)

Students will be reading about the countries favorite sport to their partner. Students will also be locating their countries. Students will be learning how to

pronounce countries and looking up words they do not know in the dictionaries. The students will then actively perform their sport. The students will switch to their second country they have chosen after the first 20 minutes are up. The lesson should take approximately 40 minutes with about 5 minutes of time at the beginning to explain and about 5 minutes at the end to clean up and get back in their seats or go back to their classroom. Students will be given a quiz at the end of this lesson. The quiz will ask the student to write down which continent or continents that their countries were on. (The teacher and aide need to keep track of which partners picked which countries.) The students will then have to choose, multiple choice-style, which muscle groups they used while performing the sport. There will be extra credit for those students who can accurately spell and write down which sports they had learned. There will also be an informal assessment on the students reading skills as the teacher(s) go around and listen to the students reading about their countries sports. (Students are supposed to be able to read 140 words per minute). Be sure there is enough space to perform the skills needed. Modify the sports for those who need extra care. Make modifications for those with disabilities. Depending on the skill level of the class, be sure to wear safety gear, if needed. Go outside for this activity or use the

schools gym, if possible; if not then make modifications for the classroom because of limited space. Make sure students are being cautious of their personal space and not invading others. Be sure that all students are supervised at all times by an adult or certified teacher. The desired outcome of this activity is to get students active and to teach them about different countries on different continents all the while promoting reading and introducing new words. Students will gain confidence by the end of this lesson and be actively participating. Students will have learned a great geography, reading, and physical education lesson, all in one, in about an hour.
