Mechatronics System Design 0908531

MSD Projects First Semester 2009_2010

The following is a list of the projects offered. For each project you are required to do the following: 1. Concept design of the whole system showing the overall block diagram of the system (4 marks). 2. Description of how the system will operate (4 marks). 3. Investigation and listing of any applicable standards to the system (BSI, CEN, ISO.) (4 marks). 4. Description of the transducers required for the design and the relevant datasheets and characteristics (4 marks). Detailed calculations will attract 4 bonus points. 5. Description of the actuators (rotary or linear) that are required in the system and the relevant datasheets and characteristics (4 marks). Detailed calculations will attract 4 bonus points. 6. Selection of the type of controller to be used (PLC, PIC microcontroller or PC) (4 marks). 7. Selection of the control algorithm to be used if relevant (P, PI, PID, on/off) (4 marks). 8. Flowchart diagram of the software required to operate the system (4 marks). 9. Detailed software code (4 marks). 10. Assessment of any hazards and risks within the system (4 marks). 11. Description of safety features required to reduce or eliminate any hazards (4 marks). 12. Detailed wiring diagrams (4 marks). 13. User instructions (4 marks). 14. Maintenance requirements (4 marks). Total Marks: 56 marks (out of 100 total marks) For the system that you select you will need to do a comprehensive literature survey on how the system works, what components are usually used commercially. This will give you enough background information to start designing the system. The systems offered are as follows: New Projects: 1. Elevator Logic and speed control system. 2. Train Control System. 3. XYZ Crane in a factory. 4. Robotic arm in a car factory that sprays paint onto the car body (suitable for students who have studied the robotics course). 5. Nuclear facility that generates electricity. 6. Gas turbine generator control system used for electricity generation. 7. Desalination plant. 8. Automatic vehicle guidance system in a bumpy terrain in the desert. 9. Passenger aeroplane boarding bridges. The bridge will automatically engage with the aeroplane to allow safe passenger boarding and alighting. 10. Conveyor belt in a bread factory for preparing, baking and packing the bread. 11. Satellite dish controller (latitude and tilt controller) that receives a signal from the satellite and automatically aligns itself with the satellite. 12. CNC machine that uses laser to cut pieces of metal. It should link automatically to a CAD program. Past projects for information (reports can be found on the website): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Biodiesel production facility using vegetable oil. Anti-lock braking system in a vehicle. Vending machine for drinks (coffee, tea) accepting coins and giving change. Hydraulic lifting platform for a 2 ton vehicle in a car showroom. Automatic sorting system for tomatoes of different diameters. The tomatoes will be exported to Europe in accordance with a specific diameter range. 6. Bottle filling production line. The production line will fill milk into clear glass bottle. It will also seal the bottles with a cap. 7. A pneumatic tube system in a hospital for transporting blood samples between various department and the laboratory. 8. Heat seeking guided missile that follows a plane and destroys it. Each group will have to submit a report and then do a 10 minute presentation on the system design. This will be followed by questions and answers. Bonus marks (10 marks) will be given for animation videos (3D Max). Bonus marks (10 marks) will be given for Pro-Engineer Design. Schedule of submission and presentations Each group shall indicate their three preferences of the projects above in order of preference (e.g., 3, 12, 1), via e-mail. Projects will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Reports should be submitted via e-mail (preferably in pdf format) with one hard copy submitted befor the presentation. Each group shall be given 10 minutes for their presentation (8 minutes presentation and 2 minutes for questions). All members of the team should contribute to the presentation. Presentation will take place outside the lecture hours. Times to be advised. Marks will be given for: Technical content (see previous section for details): 56 marks. Teamwork (8 marks). Presentation (14 marks). Time management during the presentation (8 marks). Questions and answers following the presentation (14 marks). Report is assessed with the technical content.
