Q1 Write a paragraph on any one of the following topics. (150-200 words) I Protecting the environment Ii Impact of globalization on your culture iii Mercy Killing I Euthanasia iv Curbing Corruption Solution: Curbing Corruption
Corruption is a significant problem in India and much of the developing world. The inefficiencies engendered by corruption can be a significant drain on local development. While policymakers and the man on the street recognize the importance of the problem, the solution to the problem is quite tricky and, as a result, evades consensus on how best to reduce the menace. A recent economic research concludes that the right combination of external audit and grassroots monitoring by community members, and careful implementation of the same may be effective in reducing corruption. One approach to reducing corruption suggests that the right combination of monitoring and punishments can control corruption. In practice, however, the very individuals tasked with monitoring and enforcing punishments may themselves be corruptible. In that case, increasing the chances that a low-level official would be monitored by a higher-level official would result only in bribes and other such forms of transfers between the officials, not in a reduction in corruption. An alternative approach to reducing corruption, which has gained prominence in recent years, is to increase grassroots participation by community members in local-level monitoring. Community participation is now regarded, in much of the development community, as the key not only to reduced corruption but also to improved public service delivery more generally. For example, the entire World Development Report 2004 is devoted to the idea of putting poor people at the centre of service provision: enabling them to monitor and discipline service providers, amplifying their voice in policymaking and strengthening the incentives for service providers to serve the poor. The idea behind the grassroots approach is that community members are the people who benefit from a successful programme; therefore, they would have stronger incentives to monitor corruption at the local level than disinterested central government bureaucrats.

Silent. Weak. Slow. Unfortunate. These were the words thrown at me by my teacher in preschool during my nursery years. She told my parents that I had no way of passing and getting into a good school and start attending kindergarten. I could even still vividly remember her short hair, round face, chinita eyes and hoarse voice, angrily looking and shouting at me. Indeed, I was a depressed and an ill-fated child,

but through my parents love and support, they continued to encourage me to study harder and prove everyone wrong, that I was not to be stepped on; that I would do well in my studies. After taking nursery, I took the entrance exam in the school my parents wished me to attend, Uno High School. I believe that taking that test was so dreadful that I could not even remember what I was doing at that time. Fortunately, through the works of God, I was able to pass the exam. Although my mother was a little hesitant at first to let me study there because she was worried that I would not be able to survive the hardship in studying in that school, my father trusted me, one hundred and one percent, and thus, I entered the school with fear, yet with great determination. At that point in time, I had set my goal: crush the painful words of my teacher, and let everyone watch and learn. I had put my heart into it and decided to take the challenge. I studied to death, seriously answered the exercises, seatwork and homework, and slept late at night with my mother as my tutor, but I had no confidence in myself. Even with the motivation my parents have always given me, I never trusted myself, my strengths, and abilities. Great opportunities are often disguised as impossible circumstances in life. Moving forward to my kindergarten graduation day, my family attended the event to see my very first and special two time walk on stage to receive my English and Chinese diplomas, which was truly a good achievement despite other peoples bad impression of me with my studies. Beyond my familys expectations and imagination, I did not only get up on stage twice, but for four times! One was to receive my English diploma, Chinese diploma, Most Responsible Student certificate and Best in Filipino award. Moreover, I was one of the top students in our batch. Astonishingly, I did not only break the curse my teacher chanted and give my parents pride, but I also gained so much self-confidence and determination from that time to accomplish more and earn integrity with perseverance, discipline and gratitude. In the beginning, although a huge rock stumbled across my path, I was still able to withstand it and see the silver lining with my faith in God, parents guidance and hard work. Beyond doubt, this fairy tale story like, once upon a time happened an unfortunate event turned into a happily ever after ending, was not only a memorable, but also a very remarkable experience from my pigtail years with the achievements I have gathered and the lessons I have learned that I would always be glad to narrate to everyone, stand as an inspiration and motivation, and tell them that nothing is impossible. Just when you think you cant do it, do it!

5 Read the following passage and make notes on it in the appropriate format. (1 5) How do animals become extinct? Animals may become extinct in three ways. First of all, they may evolve into another species and not really die out at all. For example. through time, many early forms of horses and of human beings have progressively changed by evolution into new species. The old species has changed and not really died out, so this is called pseudoextinction. The second way in which animals have died out is for a single species to disappear because of some local disturbance. Many animals that have very special diets, for example, could die out very easily if their source of food goes. It is thought that certain species of dinosaurs were adapted to eating particular kinds. of reedy plants. When these disappeared, those particular species of dinosaurs starved and so died out. Other aspects of an animal's way of life could lead to extinction. For example, the mammoth's and woolly rhinos of Europe were adapted to living in the cold conditions of the ice ages. When the ice retreated, they could not adapt to life in warmer conditions, and this may have led to their extinction. Animals which have very special ways of life are clearly much more likely to become extinct than those that can live almost anywhere. The panda, which eats only the shoots of bamboo canes, is much more likely to die out than, say, the rat, which seems to be able to eat anything. The panda is one of many endangered species. The third kind of extinction is mass extinction. This is when many hundreds of thousands of species die out all over the world at the same time. There may have been as many as 10 or more mass extinctions in the past 600 million years when plants and animals were wiped out in droves on land and in the sea. Many scientists are studying these mass extinctions with great interest because they want to find out why this happened. One theory is that they were caused by gradual changes in climate that lasted for 1-5 million years altogether. The other theory is much more dramatic. It says that the Earth had been hit by showers of comets 26 million years or so ago. As many as half of all living species were wiped out by the great explosions and dust clouds that shut out the sunlight. No one can say which of these ideas is correct. (200 words) (1 5) Solution: (iii) Parenting and family Essence.
Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical [disambiguation needed], emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from the biological relationship. In the case of humans, it is usually done by the

biological parents of the child in question although governments and society take a role as well. In many cases, orphaned or abandoned children receive parental care from non-parent blood relations. Others may be adopted, raised by foster care, or be placed in an orphanage. The goals of human parenting are debated. Usually, parental figures provide for a child's physical needs, protect them from harm, and impart in them skills and cultural values until they reach legal adulthood, usually after adolescence Family structure also contributes greatly to child behavior. When deviance is concerned many people will look at parents. This is important because parents are the primary socializing agents of children which mean they greatly contribute to their child's behavior. When children come from different familial structures it is essential to understand how that type of family affects their behavior, especially in school. Intact families and single parent families often function differently from each other Many families show similarities, however who is in charge of the family is a key contributor to child behavior. According to strain theory by Agnew (1985) it affects their development, how they relate to things and people and overall how they react to everyday situations. As transitions in families take place and as times evolve it becomes essential to understand how these transitions affect the family structure and those experiencing the transitions Children coming from a non-intact family which is often considered single parent families show higher incidences of deviant behaviors That is not to say that children that come from families in which both parents are present are not delinquent, these families show lower rates than those who only have one parent present Schroeder et al. (2010) discovered that families in which the children resided with the father had high rates of behavior and delinquency problems than those households led by the mother Although mother led households experienced less behavior and delinquency problems their children were still having issues surrounding their deviant behaviors more than intact families
