ust a few years ago, Redeemer
Lutheran Church congregant Dick
Allewelt had the idea to start a
church program that would collect items
to be enclosed in care packages mailed to
men and women serving in the United
States armed forces. The plan was to
send care packages to servicemen and
women who were found on the prayer
list at Redeemer Lutheran as a way to
give them a taste of home while they
were serving overseas.
[Dick] often said to me that we
should let the military people on our
prayer list know that we appreciate them
and put action into our prayers for
them, said Allewelts wife, Doris, via an
email on his behalf.
In November 2009, the Allewelts
Tears flowed freely and the hugs lasted a long time as
Senior Airman Jorge Gonzalez surprised his daughter, Celene,
at Mennies Elementary School last Monday after returning
home from a 7-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Gonzalez is a former U.S. Marine now serving as a muni-
tions specialist for the Air National Guard. He was deployed
to Afghanistan in October. Celine is a fourth-grade student
and has been missing her father very much, according to her
teacher, Ms. Bielenda Torrence. Celine knew her dad would
be home this week, but not which day.
Ms. Torrence, Mrs. Lisa Arena (Mennies principal) and Mrs.
Kristen Speakmen (assistant principal) all participated in an
elaborate ruse to preserve the surprise. Celine's mother, Olga,
also helped set up the big moment. Celine was called out of
class, allowing a sizable contingent of print and broadcast per-
sonnel to set up in the classroom. The class was told some-
thing "special" was going to happen. The fourth grader was
then returned to her room, and the day's lesson continued.
That's when her father strode into the room, and gently
tapped her on the shoulder. Celine turned all the way around
in her chair and by that time her father had taken her into his
arms and enveloped her in a hug that lasted a long time.
The two did not separate for the rest of the visitincluding
TV interviews, questions from reporters, and even sharing
slices from a red, white and blue cake decorated with

Boxes
For
Soldiers
If you know a member of the U.S. armed services currently serving over-
sees, tell Ed Morvay (left) and Wayne Grant. The congregants of
Redeemer Lutheran Church want to send them a taste of home.

brought the idea for Boxes For Soldiersa
simple but accurate namebefore the
Church Council, and it was immediately
approved, with the first shipment of care
packages going out in January 2010. Since
that time, the program has continued,
shipping out care packages three times a
year to servicemen and women who
appear on the prayer list.
But now Boxes For Soldiers is expand-
ing, and if youve got a friend or family
member serving in the armed forces,
theyre looking for you.
In the early part of 2012, Thrivent
Financiala faith-based, not-for-profit
membership organization with $75 billion
in assetsagreed to partner with
Redeemer Lutheran on the Boxes For
Soldiers program. The plan is to go from
shipping out 12 to 15 care packages three
times a year to more than 50 care pack-
ages with each shipment, expanding as
they go, with Thrivent covering the cost of
postage.
The partnership with Thrivent has cre-
ated a surplus of funds that will allow
Boxes For Soldiers to expand beyond the
prayer list, and theyre seeking recom-
mendations from community members
about servicemen and women to whom
they can send the care packages.
Were looking for anyone locally who
knows someone in the military, said Ed
Morvay, a congregant at Redeemer
Lutheran and facilitator for Boxes For
Soldiers. It doesnt matter if you live in
Vineland or outside of Vineland, in or out-
side of Cumberland County, if you know
someone serving, we want to
hear from you. Weve got care
packages that can go out, and
we want them to go to service-
men or women who have ties
locally. You dont have to be a
member of this church, or
even a Lutheran. You just have
to know someone in the mili-
tary.
I went to the recruitment
office to try to glean some
information, said Morvay.
They thought it was a great
idea, but they couldnt really
pass along mailing informa-
tion. I went to the Mayor, but
he only gets the information of
soldiers coming home. So we
need people to come to us and tell us
about their family or friends in the serv-
ice. Even if the person serving isnt from
the area, none of that matters. All that
matters is that theyre serving.
Care packages consist of practical
things like batteries, hand sanitizer,
Imodium, Ziploc bags, eye drops and
ChapStick; they also consist of things like
candy and snacks, reading material, hot
sauce and seasoning, Tastykakes, and even
well-wishing cards. There is no charge to
the public for mailing them.
Those interested in getting a care
package sent to a friend or family mem-
ber currently serving in the armed forces
can send the name and mailing informa-
tion to:
Redeemer Lutheran Church
C/O Boxes For Soldiers
2384 E. Landis Ave.
Vineland, NJ 08360
Please include your information and
relation to the person serving, so that you
can be credited in a note included in the
care package.

Students Advance in
Creative Design
Challenge
Students in the Vineland High
School Alpha Theta Phi organization
recently competed in the preliminaries
of the Panasonic Creative Design
Challenge at Panasonic Headquarters in
Secaucus and progressed to the final
competition.
This years challenge required the
students design a Mars-rover themed
vehicle capable of surviving a drop,
navigating out of a crater and over
rough terrain, pulling down obstacles,
driving over a see-saw, collecting, sort-
ing, and depositing materials, and turn-
ing on switches of different heights,
according to Ivonna Dumanyan, club
president. Dumanyan and team mem-
bers Rahi Patel, Jessica Flitcraft, Abby
Dooley, and Ajay Puri, under the super-
vision of Ms. Benita P. Villar, invested
countless hours over the past few
months into designing and constructing the vehicle.
Competing teams are judged on the quality of a written report, oral presentation, engineering logbook entries, as well as
the performance of their apparatus.

Barse Sewing Club Wins Medal For Quilt
Students in the Barse Elementary School sewing club won second place in the
recent Garden Patch Quilters competition at Wheaton Village, according to
Carolyn Talbot Dowling, Barse guidance counselor and club advisor.
The project began last year when then-fourth grader Alexandria Rodriguez had
to stay indoors for a time at recess because of an injury.
To pass the time, we began a sewing project, said Mrs. Talbot-Dowling.
Before long, some of her friends joined our group and the Barse Sewing Club
was formed. The students began sewing hexagon-shaped pieces together and
before long joined them into a quilt that just grew and grew. They picked a neu-
tral grey cotton to join the various designs together.
In addition to Rodriguez, the club includes Anahi Montero, Tijaea Quiles, and
Destiny Maldonado. Talbot-Dowling said the students were thrilled to receive the
invitation to compete in the Garden Patch competition, entitled "A Garden of Quilts."

VHS AFJROTC Cadet
Jones Nominate for
Air Force Academy
Cadet Brandon Jones, a
Vineland High School senior in
the Air Force Junior Reserve
Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)
program, was nominated by Rep.
Frank LoBiondo (R-2) to attend the
U.S. Air Force Academy, according
to Robert Simpson, a retired USAF
Major who is a senior aerospace
instructor at the school.
Graduates of the Academy's
four-year program receive a
Bachelor of Science degree, and
most are commissioned as sec-
ond lieutenants in the United
States Air Force.
"Cadet Jones is the epitome of professionalism and a top cadet in our pro-
gram," said Major Simpson. "He is focused and meticulous and possesses a
character above reproach. He is a natural leader with a maturity level above
many of his peers and a strong academic and athletic background. Jones, a
transfer student from Georgia, has maintained a 3.5 grade point average at VHS
and has attended various color guard events, said Major Simpson.
Prior to transferring to VHS, Cadet Jones was a member of the Lithia Springs
(Ga.) High School Marine Junior ROTC program where he participated in the drill
team, sword detail and color and honor guards at various competition and events.
While attending school there, Cadet Jones was a member of the varsity track
and cross country teams, the local football league and excelled as a trumpeter in
the school's marching band.
Cadet Jones will find out this month if his nomination is successful.

First NJ Food Swapping Group
Starting in Region
Do you like to garden, cook, bake, can or
forage? Join the food swap movement! The
South Jersey Swappers will be hosting their
first official swap on Saturday, May 19, from3
to 5 p.m. at The Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland.
Swappers bring their goods, which can be
a few different items or the same item. Its a
good idea to start with about 10 itemskeep
in mind youll go home with 10 different
homemade goodies. Next, swappers fill out a
swap sheet, which lets everyone know
what your items are, ingredients, how to
enjoy, etc. Then everyone scopes out the
other swap items, mingles and samples.
Once a swapper sees an item they want, they
write their name and the item theyre offer-
ing on the swap sheet. Finally, everyone
looks over their swap sheets and decides
which swaps they want to do. Swaps are
one-for-one and no money is exchanged.
Ideas for swap itemshomegrown veg-
gies/fruit, foraged food, breads, jams, canned
items, granola, farm-fresh eggs, fruit leather,
cookies, infusions, sauces, dressings, home-
made spices mixes, herbs, honey, etc.
When people swap or barter, they are
going back to simpler times when goods were
a formof payment. NewJersey has a rich his-
tory in farming and a strong local food cul-
ture. As people begin to pay more attention
to where their food comes from and how its
made, the food swapping movement is sure to
catch on. After all, this is the Garden State.

Jersey Swappers on Facebook and check out

The league will consist of four teams
with different age and weight restrictions.
The new teams will compete in the Atlantic
County Football League.
Players 8 and 9 years old can weigh up
to 115 pounds; 10 and 11 year-olds, 140
pounds; and 12-14 year olds, 175 pounds.
The number of teams in each division will
depend on the registration.
There is also a cheerleading squad for
each age group.
Registration fee is $75 for players and
$50 for cheerleaders. Birth certificates and
proof of address are required at registra-
tion.
The goal of this league will be getting
more players at the high school level, said
Belfi. We will follow the high school
offense and defensive schemes, techniques,
and philosophy. There will be special con-
cern on the players grades and behavior in
the school, community and team, he said.
We're really excited about having a sec-
ond league, said Donnie Robbins, VHS
Athletic Director. This program wasnt
created to compete against Vinelands other
midget football teams, which have done a
wonderful job over the years. We just want
to get more kids out there playing football.
The Vineland Midget Football League
competes in the Tri-County Midget
Football League and is based at the com-
plex at Third Street and Chestnut Avenue.
Deer Carcass Removal Taken
Over by Road Department
Deputy Director Ben Laury announced
recently that as a cost savings measure, the
County will eliminate the contract for deer
carcass removal. The Salem County Road
Department/Public Works will take over
the responsibility effective immediately.
The cost savings will be on an average
of $8,375.00 per year, said Freeholder Ben
Laury. While the vendor gave us a very
good bid, we felt as though this job could
be done in house.
The Salem County Road Department/
Public Works will be restricted to remove
carcasses only on county roadways, as did
the previous contract. The responsibility
will become part of the routine work per-
formed by Road Department workers.
On average about 150 carcasses are
taken to the landfill each year, said
Freeholder Laury, and that number has
been increasing every year since 2009.
Should anyone have any questions or
concerns, contact Jeff Ridgway at 856-935-
7510, ext. 8604.

mother questioned why she was buying these things and just putting them away,
she responded by saying "Don't worry, these are my things and one day I'll sell
them in my store." Today, 30 years later, her dream has come truea new store,
in the town she has called home for nine years, where she will sell her things.

Cinco De
Mayo
Plan to spend the 5th of May at Landis MarketPlace.
I
n my column a couple of weeks ago,
I urged you to come out and help us
plant flowers at the downtown mini-
parks for Spring Planting Day, on
May 5. Well, another event is coming up
that same day that will make our beautifi-
cation efforts that much more important
and it will provide a reward for all your
hard work in helping us plant flowers.
After the planting is done, head down to
Landis MarketPlace for a celebration of
Cinco de Mayo. The celebration is being
organized by Las Lomas Fresh Mexican
Grille and will take place from 12 to 5 p.m.
in the rear parking lot, at Seventh and
Elmer streets. In case of rain, the event will
occur, in scaled-down form, inside Landis
MarketPlace, at 631 E. Landis Avenue.
You do not have to be Hispanic to enjoy
all the great food, music, and fun of Cinco
de Mayo and plenty of each will be on
hand for you at this event. You can enjoy
traditional Mexican folklore, food, music,
and dancing. You will be able to treat your-
self to such food specialties as grilled
tacos, quesadillas, and melted chicken and
cheese tortilla shells. They will have a beer
garden featuring pia coladas, margaritas,
and traditional Louisiana drinks.
In addition, there will have plenty of live
Mexican-style music, including a mariachi
band. Make sure to bring the kids because a
clown and a face-painter will be on hand as
well as a variety of other vendors.
You can also treat yourself to an all-you-
can-eat seafood boil, courtesy of Lucianos
FreshMarket. Purchase a ticket for $25 and
enjoy all the shrimp, crabs, clams, corn,
potatoes, and sausage you can eat!
If you step inside, you will find other
exciting specials throughout the market.
So, help us plant flowers in the morn-
ing, and stay downtown for the afternoon
and celebrate Cinco de Mayo!
***
You will also want to make downtown
Vineland your destination midweek, as our
Keep It Local Wednesdays promotion is
in full swing. Make sure to pick up a Keep
It Local Wednesdays discount card at the
Main Street Vineland office, or at partici-
pating merchants. Its your passport to spe-
cial offers at these businesses. You will find
a list of the participating businesses and
their Wednesday-only offers will be listed
on the Main Street Vineland website.
As part of the Keep It Local cam-
paign, we will be bringing back the popu-
lar Lunch on Landis from May 16
through 22 with $8 lunch specials for you
do enjoy at participating eateries. I will
have more details on this very soon.
We are also planning a Downtown
Sidewalk Sale for Saturday, July 28. Look
for more details about that, as well I

Vintage Vineland { VINCE FARINACCIO }
Years Gone By
Program books from the towns 50-year celebrations
are a good keepsake, and the Sesquicentennial book
is now available.
L
ast year at this time, Vineland
was still anticipating the summer
celebration that would mark its
150th year. The excitement of
those festivities, like the year itself, seemed
to fly by faster than we preferred. While
the displays have long been dismantled, the
parade route restored to the high school
roadways and the music and fireworks
committed to memories as the town has
resumed its normal pace, we still have an
opportunity to revisit 2011 with the recent-
ly released Sesquicentennial Program.
The book is something every Vineland
household should possess. The scarcity of
its 1961 counterpart demonstrates the
importance of obtaining a copy for yourself
and, more importantly, for future genera-
tions of your family. But before its
inevitably stored away, the program should
be examined and you should take your
time, sift through it and savor the memories
of last year and the ways in which our his-
tory is honored.
What youll find is a compact history of
Vineland or, as the title proclaims, One
Mans Dream. Founder Charles K. Landis
is present from the cover photo to the arti-
cle about his gravesite, and his vision is per-
vasive throughout the book. From the strik-
ing historical and modern photographs that
grace the programs 150 pages to the
accompanying texts, penned by local histor-
ical authorities including Dr. Frank DeMaio
and Kevin J. Kirchner, the spirit of Landis
is present.
A handy list of mayors and council
members since the 1952 consolidation of
Vineland Borough and Landis Township
appears after a run of congratulatory letters
from political leaders, from the governor to
the mayors of surrounding cities.
Organizations, clubs, schools, churches and
accomplishments are all on display.
In its most effective sections, the book
provides a comparative look at the past and
the present through both images and
words. The concluding section of the book,
titled Yesterday and Today, places histori-
cal shots of familiar locations and sites
side-by-side with photos of their current
incarnations. Following the segment on
Women in Vinelands History, the pro-
gram offers a pair of poems about the town
by 19th century writer Anna Marie
Spaulding and contemporary poet Nancy
Steelman.
Even several of the ads contained in the
program have historical import, in particu-
lar a page devoted to De Rossi & Son Co.
This clothing manufacturer was featured in
a similar full-page advertisement in the
1961 Centennial book, with a photo of the
three generations in charge of this family-
owned business and copy proclaiming its
35-year history at the same Sixth Street
location. Fifty years later, the current ad
employs the same photo, this time cap-
tioned, and text that celebrate its 85-year
existence at the same site with the same
pride as the accomplishments listed after it.
The book also contains two entries by
resident teenagers on What Its Like to Be
a Kid in Vineland Today. Their evaluations
are now preserved for future generations of
teens who will have something to compare
to their lives. Even though space limitations
were no doubt a factor, more entries would
have been nice.
The 2012 release of the Sesquicentennial
Program has allowed it to create a time
capsule of moments from the previous year.
A special section dubbed Events captures
the festivities in full swing. Theres the
cake controversy that briefly overshadowed
the proceedings, the Veterans Memorial
Day Parade, the Annual Car Show and the
Founders Day and Womans Club 150th
Celebrations. Each is accompanied by a col-
lection of photos and text that preserve the
moment.
If you dont already have a copy of the
Sesquicentennial Program, pick one up and
peruse it at your leisure. Maybe youll see a
friend or relative in a photo, recall an event
you attended or learn something you didnt
know about the town. And if you happen to
have a copy of the rare 1961 Centennial
booklet, you might want to pull that out
and compare it to the new release.
And since human nature is a predictable
phenomenon, chances are the next time
you sit with the Sesquicentennial book will
be a decade or two from now when its
rediscovered while looking for something
else. By then, a lot will have changed in this
town and youll find that the program will
serve a different purpose. I

WheatonArts Receives Grant
From The Horizon Foundation
Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center has
received a grant in the amount of $10,000
from The Horizon Foundation for New
Jersey. The grant supports the Glasstown
Collective Education Program, a group of
childrens programs that serve regional stu-
dents ages 3 to18.
The programs of the Glasstown
Collective were developed to address inter-
active arts education, basic skills needs and
a lack of out-of-classroomexperience in the
public school system. WheatonArts holds
the conviction that the arts must be an inte-
gral part of the education of all citizens and
there should be special emphasis on school
age children, as a part of their basic educa-
tion. WheatonArts is in a unique position to
address the gaps and absence of arts pro-
gramming in local schools. The Glasstown
Collective specifically creates opportunities
for students fromthe Millville Child Family
Center and Cumberland County Public
Schools and for students currently under
the supervision of NewJersey Juvenile
Justice Commission.
For more information about
WheatonArts, call 856-825-6800 or 800-
998-4552, or visit www.wheatonarts.org.

p.m. with Camp-by-Candlelight, an
event that features an authentic repro-
duction of a Civil War era encamp-
ment, complete with Civil War soldiers
representing both the Union and
Confederate camps and their families.
Garbed in period attire and placed on
the verdant green of the Elwyn grounds
on Landis Avenue (just east of Main
Road), the smell of warm woodburning
fire pits and the glow of torches and
lantern-light takes the visitor back in
time to an important era in American
history, 1861, the same year Vineland
was founded by Charles K. Landis.
Sponsored by the Friends of Historic
Vineland, local history re-enactors,
along with traveling Civil War re-enac-
tors from other states, present this cel-
ebration of history and hometown the
third weekend in May each year. Camp-
by-Candlelight features live period
music on the campsite grounds by the
Piney Hollow Drifters, playing musical
instruments of the era.
Then, make plans to attend a full
day of local history celebrations on
Saturday, May 19 when Founders Day
continues from 10 a.m.4 p.m. with
more Civil War re-enactments, music,
games, and fifty historical exhibits
detailing the history of Vineland. This

Hannah Daubenspeck was the Top Banana
in Mrs. Walsh's first grade class at Janvier

of their first meeting with Hannah in China
when she was adopted. As a special treat her
dad brought pretzels for the class to enjoy.
Hannah is pictured above with her dad,
Rachel Miller and Konnor Reilly.
Jordyn Conrad was another Top Banana
in Mrs. Walsh's first grade class at Janvier
School. Jordyn's mother came to class and
read the book, No Excuses! Jordyn is pic-
tured with her mother, Kaylee Bowman and
Dominick De Simone, another Top Banana.
Dominicks Dad came to class and talked
about his job and the uniform that he wears
as a corrections officer. Dominick is holding
a bullet proof vest his father wears at work.
He is pictured with his Dad, Anthony
Biscardi, and Nicholas Sheridan.

Delsea High School PSLP Project
Dr. Charyl S. Yarbrough, Project Director from The John J. Heldrich Center
for Workforce Development, visited Delsea Regional High School on March 22
to view Delseas Transitions program and to collect final data and student feed-
back regarding Delseas participation in the states pilot program, Personalized
Student Learning Plans (PSLP).
The Personalized Student Learning Plan pilot program provides an opportu-
nity for schools to explore meaningful, creative and flexible ways to personalize
the learning environment through the development and implementation of a
Personalized Student Learning Plan. A Personalized Student Learning Plan is
defined as a formalized plan and process that involves students setting learn-
ing goals based on personal, academic, and career interests, beginning in the
middle school grades and continuing throughout high school with the close
support of adult mentors that include teachers, counselors and parents.

reetings! Strawberry season is one of
my favorites. You can add strawber-
ries to both savory and sweet dishes
they are so versatile. Here are three recipes
that showcase these amazing, healthy gems,
in the sweetest of ways.
Salad with Strawberry
Balsamic Vinaigrette
6 cups romaine lettuce, chopped or torn
into bite-sized pieces
1 cup sliced fresh strawberries, divided
1/2 cup mandarin orange slices
1/2 small onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/4 cup pecan halves, or candied pecan
halves
2 tbs. balsamic vinegar
4 tbs. extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
In a large bowl, add lettuce, 3/4 cup
strawberries, mandarin orange slices, onion,
feta cheese and pecans. In a blender, add
1/4 cup strawberries, balsamic vinegar, olive
oil, salt and pepper, then blend ingredients
until smooth. Drizzle dressing over salad,
toss gently, and serve.
Refreshing Strawberry
Smoothie
1/4 cup rice or almond milk
1 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled
1 - 2 tbs. honey, blue agave or maple
syrup
1 cup ice cubes
Put all ingredients into a blender and
blend until smooth. Serve.
Strawberry & Dark Chocolate
Chip Muffins
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unbleached white whole wheat
flour
2 tbs. oat bran, wheat germ or flaxseed
flakes
3/4 cup sugar or natural sugar substitute
1/2 tsp. sea salt
2 tbs. non-aluminum baking powder
3/4 cup milk, rice milk or almond milk
1/3 cup safflower or sunflower oil
1 large egg
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 cup fresh diced strawberries
1/4 cup mini dark chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 375. In a large bowl, stir
together flours, oat bran, sugar, salt and bak-
ing powder. In a separate bowl, mix togeth-
er milk, oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Add wet
ingredients to the dry ingredients all at
once, stir just until combined. Fold in the
strawberries and mini chocolate chips. Fill
greased or paper-lined muffin cups three-
fourths full with batter. Bake for 20-22 min-
utes or until a toothpick inserted into the
center of the muffin comes out clean. Makes
one dozen muffins. I

ince being founded in 1954 by
Rose and Ernest Merighi, Buena
Vista Townships landmark Savoy
Inn has been expanded by each
successive generation taking the reins of
management.
In 1969, sons Tom, Sr. and Ernie added
the facilitys massive, airport hanger-sized
rear ballroom. Two years later, a former
loungecurrently the Bistrowas also
included.
The Savoy expanded further in 1990 to
include a 100-person private party space
called The Rose Room.
So it only seems fitting that current
operator Tom Merighi, Jr. has now added
his own personal jewel, the outdoor dining
terrace/bar called Lunas.
Arcing around the northwest corner of
the 10-acre property, Lunas 125 seats are
nicely shielded from wind, weather and
noise. Important considering that The
Inns front door faces directly onto the
busy intersection of Chestnut Avenue and
Union Road.
Lunas opening was the culmination of
a two-year-long planning process. After
obtaining necessary governmental permits,
this began with the installation of an
extensive solar field at the propertys rear
in August of 2011, providing a portion of
The Inns power.
Merighi goes on to allow that Weve

been trying to go green with all our prod-
ucts. This included utilizing reclaimed
woodfrom, appropriately enough, former
pickle barrelsin Lunas courtyard.
Traipsing through the terracotta-hued
space with him on a breezy April after-
noon, Merighis enthusiasm is easily
understandable. Surrounded by lush, green
fields, emanating the sweet essence of
southern New Jersey spring, Lunas is
entirely conducive to a spirit of relaxed
enjoyment.
A wide bar, with seating for 20, stretch-
es out along the wall of the main building.
Next, a spacious area of covered seating,
replete with dramatic, high ceilings, is
available.
But our favorite spot just might be on
Lunas eastern side, a real al fresco patio
that will also be available for smaller pri-
vate parties.
Merighi goes on to laud Head Chef
Shauna Bailey for her input on their casu-
ally elegant bill of fare, clearly designed to
be in concert with the bucolic surround-
ings. He says of Bailey: She had the desire
to do this and rose to the occasion. She
took the task at hand.
This meant creating items like fire
roasted wings, which Tom says originated
from my grandmothers recipe. This poul-
try is marinated in olive oil, garlic and
herbs, then grilled and served with a
Hoisin buffalo sauce.
Or another of Lunas small plates,
Fontina cheesenative to the Merighi fam-
ilys original home in northern Italys Val
DAostabaked in a cast iron pan with
olive oil, garlic, thyme and rosemary
served with semolina bread for dipping.
A lineup of sandwiches includes the
geographically accurate New Italy Po
Boy grilled sausage dressed with broccoli
rabe, sharp provolone and sliced tomatoes
on a semolina baguette.
Or the signature LunaFish, grilled fillet
of Lake Victorian perch, a species not
often seem locally. Described on the menu
as being similar to grouper, the fish is
presented with green leaf lettuce, tomato
and remoulade sauce on a country potato
roll.
Five saladsahi tuna, spinach and flank
steak, chopped chicken and Greekalong
with BBQ ribs and a Louisiana seafood boil
of shrimp, clams, corn on the cob, Italian
sausage and redskin potatoes, round out
the offerings.
Drinks were similarly created with the
environs in mind by head barkeep Leanne
Kurtz. Signature beverage The Luna-tic
combines vodka, lemoncello, agave, blue
curacao and ginger ale while the cucumber
martini derives from a house-made vodka
infusion, fresh cukes, lime, plus a splash of
sours, rimmed with salt and cayenne.
We also like the sound of the Sweet
Melissa; Ciroc coconut vodka, muddled
basil, lime and sours, or the berry crazy,
muddled strawberries, Stolichnaya vodka,
agave, seltzer and mint.
Lunas plans include offering sushi from
accomplished local Chef Yoshi (formerly
of Cherry Hills Yamato) every Thursday
night starting in May.
Customers should also expect live
music here each Thursday, Friday and
Saturday night.
When queried about other key players
in the creation of Luna, Merighi mentions
his mother Jackie, extensively involved
with the design aspect, and sister Danielle,
a longtime employee of U.S. Foods.
Ask him for an initial impression of
Lunas first weeks, and Merighi happily
reports what patrons have told him: It
reminds them of someplace they love in
Italy, Florida or the islands.

Welcome Message
The month of May offers something
for every member of the GVCC! We are
pleased to present Chamber Month in
support of making a positive economic
impact by buying local. Look for our
special advertising in the Daily Journal
on May 3 and 17 with specials and pro-
motions at our member businesses. You
can also enter a drawing for $50 chamber
gift cards!
Be sure to read through this issue for
a variety of free seminars offering infor-
mation on human resource issues,
Facebook for your business and creating
emergency response plans for your busi-
ness. These are all important topics to
help you succeed. Be sure to join us on
May 3 for the kick-off luncheon. All
events require advance registration so be
sure to visit our website or give us a call.
Remember the
GVCC is here to
help you and we
have a complete
business resource
library full of
information. Stop
by our office
Monday through
Friday, between
8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and see how we
can be of assistance. As a member, you
and your organization are welcome to
include literature in that library, as we
get many people that come into our
office for area information.
I look forward to seeing you at an
event during our Chamber Month.

Greenview Inn at Eastlyn Opens New Clubhouse
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held recently at the newly expanded Greenview Inn at
Eastlyn Golf Course. The new clubhouse opened just in time for Easter brunch and owner
Rob Buono looks forward to many gatherings and celebrations there in the future. At
17,000 square feet, Greenview Inn is five times the size of the old facility, when it consist-
ed of a golf pro shop, restaurant and bar. According to Buono, who along with his parents
Bob and Rosemary has owned Eastlyn for the past eight years, the primary focus of the
new venue will be on the food. An experienced chef, Buono, describes the cuisine as
American with a Mediterranean twist, which dovetails with the architectural and interior
design evident from the front lobby to the banquet room at the rear of the building.

SJH Auxiliary Raises Nearly
$4,000 at Princess Party
The South Jersey Healthcare (SJH)
Auxiliary raised almost $4,000 recently at
the organizations annual Princess Party.
This years party was sold out, as young
princesses from ages two through six flood-
ed the South Jersey Healthcare Fitness
Connection Community Room to trade tea
and presents with Disney princesses.
Donations received by the Auxiliary help
support South Jersey Healthcare, the
regions leading network of health care
providers. Throughout the year, the
Auxiliary hosts fundraisers to help SJH
continue in its mission
of providing high-
quality health services
to patients in south-
ern New Jersey.
Lynn Crescenzo,
Auxiliary Chair, said
her organization relies
on fundraisers such as
the annual Princess
Party, the SJH
Auxiliary Annual
Calendar Raffle and
the Auxiliary Yard
Sale to generate funds
for hospital needs.
These events raise
both money and awareness in support of
South Jersey Healthcare, Crescenzo said.
The fundraisers allow the community
members to be involved with their own
health care.
The South Jersey Healthcare (SJH)
Auxiliary operates as a division of the SJH
Foundation. The purpose of the SJH
Auxiliary is to support the activities and
goals of the Foundation in promoting the
health and welfare of the communities
served by South Jersey Healthcare. For
more information about the SJH
Foundation or Auxiliary, including donation
information and volunteer opportunities,
call 856-641-8290 or visit www.sjhfdn.org.
LEGISLATIVE CORNER
We work hard on your behalf to fight for
legislation that supports your business and
promotes economic growth in our area. We
want you to be informed! Go to
www.njleg.state.nj.us for more details on
these bills and others.
HOWA BILL BECOMES LAWIN NEWJERSEY:
1. Alegislator has an idea and decides to sponsor a bill.
2. The bill is drafted by the sponsoring legislator(s) with the assistance of the Office
of Legislative Services, a non-partisan agency of the Legislature.
3. The bill is introduced during a session with title read aloud. This is the first reading.
4. The bill usually goes to a committee for review, or it can be sent directly to the
second reading by the Senate President or Assembly Speaker.
5. If the bill is sent to committee, it is scheduled for consideration at an open public
meeting or reported to the House as written with amendments, or by a substitute bill.
If neither happens, it stays in committee.
6. When the bill is reported to the floor, or referred directly by committee, the title
is read aloud for the second reading. The bill can be amended on the floor. It then has
a third reading and the House must vote to return it to the second reading for any
further amendments. The bill cannot go through the second and third readings on the
same day, except by an emergency vote of of the members.
7. The bill now gets put to vote in the House. It passes when approved by a majori-
ty of the members and is sent to the other House. If a final vote is not taken, the bill
may be considered another time or returned to committee.
8. After the House vote, the bill gets delivered to the second house and the process
is repeated. If the second House amends the bill, it gets returned to the first House for
a vote on the changes.
9. Abill receives final legislative approval when it passes both Houses in identical
form.
10. After final passage, the bill is sent to the Governor. He/she may sign it, return
it for changes (conditional veto) or veto it absolutely. Bills passed in the last 10 days of
a two-year session may be pocket vetoed.
11. Abill becomes law upon the Governors signature or after 45 days if no action
is taken. If vetoed, a bill may become law if the Legislature overrides the veto by a
2/3 vote. Alaw takes effect on the day specified in the bill, or next July 4th if a date is
not specified.
A2171 Healthcare Exchange Act: This is the states-proposed plan for health
insurance exchanges under the mandates of the federal Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act. Every state is required to develop its own exchange program or
join a regional one by 2014. If they dont, the federal government will create an
exchange for them. We do not support this bill, as it does not do enough to help
smaller businesses cope with increasing premium costs, nor does it offer enough
choice of insurance plans. We communicated our position to our state legislators who
also opposed this legislation. UPDATE: This bill is on Governor Christies desk and he
has until April 30 to take action.
We will continue to oppose it and offer revisions that will help businesses.
A2163 Minimum Wage Increase: Under this bill the state is proposing a mini-
mum wage increase to $8.50/hr (currently at $7.25/hr). We conducted a survey of our
members and on your behalf have opposed this bill at this time. Our position is that
this minimum wage increase may result in a reduction of workforce, stop plans for
new hiring, increase costs to customers, increase payroll taxes and workers compensa-
tion insurance as well as other negative impacts. We also do not agree with the pro-
posed future minimum wage increases being based on the Consumer Price Index and
want that completely removed from the bill. UPDATE: Third reading of bill is next.
S742 Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act: This bill repeals the NJ
Limited Liability Company Act and replaces it with a more modern regulatory
scheme for the creation and operation of limited liability companies in New Jersey.
We are following this bill to learn more details. It was ammended by the Senate and is
waiting on a third reading.

GVCC GREEN CORNER
The Chambers Green Initiatives Committee is focused on edu-

mation regarding environmentally friendly practices.
The Chambers Green Initiatives Committee would like to
know about green energy and practices your business or
organization has engaged in that have helped your company
prosper. We would like to feature your project in our newslet-

Congratulations to Vineland Electric Municipal Utility for being awarded Number
1 in solar rankings in the nation. To compete for the award, the citys electric utili-
ty completed SEPAs annual Utility Solar Rankings
Survey and its solar accomplishments were com-
pared to other utilities across the country.
Vineland ranked first in the annual Solar Watts per
customer category. The city was ranked first with
768.5 watts of solar energy per customer. Blue
Ridge Mountain, Ga., ranked second with 192.4.
The association considered all types of solar
power, whether a few net-metered panels on a
house or a massive solar field behind a business.
Vineland has a variety of solar efforts amassing
24.4 megawatts, or roughly the equivalent of the
amount of electricity needed to power 5,000 homes.
The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) is
an educational, nonprofit organization focused on
working with and learning from electric utilities.
The utilities can use the data to see how they
compare.
