PRESERVING OUR HISTORY

Have you ever REALLY paid attention to the stained glass windows in the sanctuary? The windows help tell the story and history of our church. The following names are represented on the windows. Look at the windows when you go to church each Sunday in March. Beginning on the left side of the sanctuary closest to the pulpit are: Rev. James Wagg (Oct. 8, 1808-Jan. 23, 1881) John Zachariah Neal (Aug. 13, 1861-Feb. 26, 1902) Mrs. Addie Russeau Neal (DOB July 19, 1830) Maj. Quincy Franklin Neal (Oct. 20, 1824-Aug. 4, 1893) Sallie I. Todd (Aug. 31, 1844-Mar. 31, 1892) On the right side of the sanctuary beginning closest to the pulpit are: Mrs. Marietta Bartlett (Feb. 8, 1851-June 13, 1895) Joseph Cox Worth (18811942) Lessie Halsey Jones (19061965) R. Austin Jones (1906-1963) Larry Parks Colvard (Sept. 18, 1896-Oct. 3, 1963) Walter Haywood Worth (June 13, 1874-Dec. 16, 1941) As you enjoy the beauty of each window and the name of the individual(s) on each window ponder this question... Who in our current church family is related to each of these individuals? The answer to that question will be in your April Connection. Until then see if you can name those in our congregation who have a connection to a name(s) on the windows. As you look at the windows, notice the pattern and the structure of the panes of stained glass. Notice the ways in which the windows have been repaired over the many years. Can you tell if the window bows in or out from years of wind and weather? Our stained glass windows are in need of repair. In an effort to raise the monies needed to assure their beauty and safety, please consider joining in the effort of a "JUMBLE." A "Jumble" is where a family or individuals have a table and provide items and/or services for sale. Each table is responsible for their items/services and collect the monies. Monies are then donated to the church for use in the repair of the windows. Are you interested in participating? In March, a sign-up poster will be placed in the fellowship hall for each table. The "Jumble" will be scheduled for a weekend in April. Be thinking about what you want to bring to your table ... a service you can provide (mowing grass, etc.), yard sale items (not clothing), a piece of furniture you no longer need, a craft you have created (barn quilt, painted glass, etc.). The ideas are endless! ~Grier Hurley Lay Leader

What Will You Give Up For Lent?
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 5 and includes the next 40 days with the exception of Sundays. Christians traditionally use this season to practice disciplines like prayer and fasting. Recently I read an article by a palliative nurse describing five things people regret before dying. Her insights bring a new twist to giving things up during Lent. She revealed that people near death most often said the following: I wish Id had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. Could we give up the expectations of others and honor the dreams God gave us? I wish I hadnt worked so hard. Could we give up the treadmill of work, give more time to be companions to our family members, and experience more joy outside of our jobs? I wish Id had the courage to express my feelings. Many people suppressed their feelings and settled for a mediocre existence. They felt they never became who they were capable of becoming. Could we give up the fear of expressing our true selves? I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. At the end of life people realized the value of true friendship. By then the years had slipped away. Can we give up whatever attitudes or experiences keep us from developing, keeping and cherishing true friends? I wish that I had let myself be happier. At the end of life, people realized that happiness was a choice. Can we give up old habits and patterns, fears and comforts, to allow ourselves to laugh, enjoy life, and experience the sillies sometimes? Karen Miller
