MERRYVALE VINEYARDS
Lots of Possibilities at the Very Merry Winery!

Merryvale is unique in several ways. It was the first winery built in the Valley after the repeal of Prohibition (known then as Sunny St. Helena), and it put a shot into the arm of the domestic wine business, letting the country know that Prohibition hadnt shut anything down in wine country. Equally, most wineries, not just in Napa but throughout the world, tend to be in less-than-easy locations to reach, which makes sense given the necessity of having grapes in locations ideal for them rather than humans and the ability to process those grapes close at hand. However, being in the city grants much easier access, not just to the winery but to the world-reknowned restaurants, shops, and community within easy walking distance. What greets visitors now are beautifully landscaped grounds, a glorious fountain, and a building which proudly shows off how long its been around, surrounded by the mid-Valley and its glorious views. The Schlatter family has created a tasting cellar which, befitting its links to Napas origins, shows off fir and redwood with lots to look at on the walls as you taste and wander around or sit at a table; the option of cheeses to pair with the wines is available, too, and adds a nice touch. Visitors can also choose private tastings in the Barrel Room, and there are often special events in the Cask Room, which shows off the history of Valley winemaking via two stories of century-old 2,000 gallon aging casks. The wines are produced in different tiers, and as befits a winery with this much pedigree, there are lots of great options. The Prestige wines present two

A Dream Takes Root MONTICELLO VINEYARDS open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. reserve tasting by advance reservation (707) 253-2802 Wine@corleyfamilynapaValley.com www.corleyfamilynapaValley.com
In 1969, the Stanford-educated Corley was a running successful publicly traded company in Los Angeles, but wanted to trade his three-piece suit for overalls. After all, farming was in his blood. Every generation of my family for 400 years has been farmers. As a boy, I loved spending time on my grandfathers farm in southern Illinois. I just always wanted to get back to farming. At the time, Corleys friend, a wine shop owner in Los Angeles, was developing a piece of property in Yountville. He invited Corley to come for a visit, and Corley was hooked and he came with the spirit of a pioneer, intent on finding some land to grow his favorite varietals. I would come up nearly every weekend for nine months to see what was going on here. I would just roam around, get to know people, ask questions. There werent many people around, but the ones who were, as Corley ticks off the names of contemporary Napa Valley pioneers, were very helpful. A self-described Burgundy guy with a taste for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Corley was looking for a place where those varieties would thrive. He found it in an 80-acre prune orchard at the southern end of Napa Valley. He liked the propertys proximity to the cooling

breezes of the San Pablo Bay, and the fact that it sat next to the Napa River. I didnt think of being on Highway 29 to capture visitors, I wanted to be on the river because I knew access to water would be essential. Once the property was cleaned up, Corley didnt cut corners planting the vineyard. We used all of the new technology coming out of Davis. We tested the soil everywhere, and we drilled holes in the ground to see how the water was flowing. Then we planted the vines closer together than most people were doing in those days to stress them. Jay Corley was a grower only until 1980, when he hired a winemaker and started to produce wine, too. Jay Corley has since passed the reins of the vineyards and winery to three of his sons: Kevin, winegrower and president; Stephen, who oversees marketing and administration; and Chris, the winemaker.
decided he would rather drown in wine than sea water. He worked in the cellar under other winemakers for 13 years before he earned enough stripes to become head winemaker in 2002. Now the three brothers form a harmonious management team at Monticello. Three of them is better than one of me, says the senior Corley. In the quaint, rustic tasting room, the staff pours either their Monticello Vineyards Tasting or their Corley Reserve Tasting you can do both and have a little bit of almost everything the Corleys produce from their estate vineyards in Napa Valley. The real treat is to get downstairs in The Cellar of The Jefferson House and taste in The Library or The Reserve Room. Also, guests at Monticello often get a chance to do some barrel tasting on the fly, during weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) before noon with a comparative sampling of Cabernet Sauvignon from three different estate vineyards. The Corleys love to tailor tastings to their guests preferences (with appropriate advance notice), so dont be shy about telling them what you like. They also like to show off their library and library wines in a vertical format. Margo Van Staaveren doesnt have a very long resume. In fact, I would be surprised if she ever had one. Margo has been spent her entire wine industry career, 32 years including the last ten as winemaker, with Chateau St. Jean. The Marin County native led a somewhat normal life growing up in Terra Linda, graduating high school and then enrolling at U. C. Davis, not for the winemaking courses, but I eventually fell into it, says Margo Van Staaveren, and quickly adds, the degree that was being offered back then wasnt in winemaking but in Fermentation Science. Now its called Enology. What really got her hooked was working a harvest that her dad had signed her up for at Beringer Vineyards. In addition to picking the grapes, Margo would check the brix and tend to everything else that was related to the harvest. And shortly after receiving her Davis degree, she joined Chateau St. Jean as a lab technician and never looked back. Her first day on the job she met her future husband as they were both clocking in to begin work in the vineyards lab. Sometime later, they started dating and then they married, both remaining in the lab at the winery. They both worked their way up the wine ladder to the position of assistant winemakers, and had time to raise a family as well. Husband, Don Van Staaveren, was named winemaker and eventually created the 1996 Cinq Cepages, a unique blend that totally blew away the wine industry when it was released in 1999. Wine Spectator named the 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages the Wine of the Year, the very first Sonoma County wine ever to receive the distinction. As assistant winemaker, Margo, too, was part of the team that brought home the glory to Chateau St. Jean! Soon after creating the wine, Don Van Staaveren left to work as winemaker at Artesa Winery. Presently, he creates wines for Three Sticks Wines in Sonoma. In August of 2003, it was Margos turn to become winemaker. They offered and I took it, says Margo. The kids were older and it made a lot of sense for me. As winemaker, Margo makes the final decisions involving the blend and the style to continue to produce consistently high quality wines. I believe that great wines are grown, she says, and we are very proud of our vineyard designated wines, utilizing the best fruit with exceptional varietal character. With the myriad of decisions that need to be made as winemaker such as when to pick the grapes, what to blend, how long to barrel, when to bottle, how long to keep it in the bottle; and when you are making some 40 different wines for a company the size of Chateau St. Jean, there are a lot of decisions to be made. Some of the newer vintages that will be released before too long include a Malbec Reserve, a Cold Creek Chardonnay and a Russian River Pinot Noir, which, Margo says, is a multivineyard wine that we are trying for the first time. At present, Margo and her staff are working on several wines that will be released next summer such as the 2011 Fume Blanc. Were also blending some reds a Sonoma Cabernet and a Sonoma Merlot, says Margo. Blending goes on around here all year long. Were also tasting though the last vintage wines and assessing how to put them (blend) together. There is an amazing amount of diversity to what we do here. One of her favorite aspects of her job is being able to create a wine and in a year or two, or even longer, be able to drink the fruits (no pun intended) of her labors, reliving all that went into the making of the wine. I love all the challenges of the wine business, Margo says, but it is important to realize that first and foremost, this is an agricultural business, which makes it both exciting and humbling, especially when Mother Nature is involved. So lets not worry about that resume that she probably doesnt have. I dont think Margo Van Staaveren is going anywhere anytime soon.

Perfect Pairs
Filet of Beef au Poivre with B.R. Cohn Winerys 2008 Olive Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
There is no better way to eat filet mignon except to prepare it in a classic French style with a lush, cognac sauce. Beef au Poivre makes for an elegant meal and this recipe from B.R. Cohn was created using their signature Grapeseed Oil which gives the beef a hint of nuttiness. This dish is an ideal pairing with B.R. Cohn Winerys 2008 Olive Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has pronounced aromas and flavors of plum, black currant and cherry. This rich cut of beef and lavish sauce call out for a Cabernet and the luscious berry and cherry flavors from the wine really deliver in complementing the dish. Silky tannins give way to a warm and lasting finish that is perfect with each bite. Founded by Bruce Cohn in 1984, B.R. Cohn Winery has consistently produced one of the premier Cabernets in California from their Olive Hill Estate Vineyards located in the heart of Sonoma Valley. They offer a full line of ultra-premium wines, extra virgin olive oils, handcrafted vinegars and gourmet food products. The tasting room, located in Glen Ellen, was Bruce Cohns former home. The 1920s architecture and style of the home has been preserved. Be sure to visit their Gourmet Shop to taste their extensive line of olive oils and handcrafted vinegars, along with a great selection of gifts. They have an outdoor patio area available for picnics or to take in the scenic winery estate. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are by appointment and can be made by calling 1-800-330-4064 ext. 124. B.R. This classic French bistro dish was surely created with B.R. Cohns Olive Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon in mind. Always a go to, feel good, special occasion or not recipe that is all about lush flavors that soar when paired with their Estate Cab! 6 filets mignon, cut 1 inches thick Kosher salt 2 tablespoons coarsely ground fresh black pepper 3-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 1-1/2 tablespoons B.R. Cohn Grapeseed Oil 3/4 cup chopped shallots (approximately 4 shallots) 1 cup beef broth (homemade, canned or in the box) 1/2 cup Cognac or brandy Place the filets on a board and pat them dry with paper towels. Sprinkle filets with salt and then press the freshly ground black pepper evenly on both sides. Allow the meat to rest at room temperature for at least 15 minutes. Heat 1- tablespoons of butter and the grapeseed oil in a large saut pan over medium-high until the butter almost smokes. Place the steaks in the pan and lower the heat to medium. Saut the steaks for 4 minutes on one side and then for 3 minutes on the other side, for medium rare. Remove the steaks to a serving platter and cover tightly with aluminum foil. Meanwhile, pour all but 1 tablespoon of fat from the saut pan. Add the shallots and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add the beef broth and cover over high heat for 4 to 6 minutes, until reduced by half. Be sure to scrape the brown bits from the bottom of the saut pan. Add the Cognac or brandy and cook for 2 more minutes. Take the pan off the heat and blend in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and salt. Serve the filets hot with the lush sauce poured on top. Enjoy this elegant dish with your favorite potatoes and a glass of B.R. Cohn Olive Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, you are sure to be transported to France!

Wine Tasting in
SUISUN VALLEY
d
do Tra il
Vezr Family Vineyards is one of the more picturesque and inviting of the Suisun Valley wine region. Owned by the famously friendly and welcoming Frank and Liz Vezr, the winery is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of their more well-known neighbors over the hill. With a climate that boasts of sun-drenched days and sweet foggy nights, the grapes of the Vezr Family Vineyards enjoy near perfect growing conditions. Their winery is best known for the luscious Petite Sirah that they produce, as well as their hearty, fruit-forward Zinfandel and a little known, but magnificent blend, La Salette. While lacking the big name appellation, these wines are by no means also-rans. In fact, the region is rated as the oldest and best in the State of California by the U.C Davis University. These are seriously good wines. The Vezr Family Vineyard tasting room is located in the tiny village of Mankas Corners. The town was originally established by a local miner in 1846. Hints of its old west history can be seen in the old general store and surrounding buildings. The tasting room is open seven days a week and no appointment is necessary. The ten dollar tasting fee is waived with a wine purchase. But, to really get the most out of your visit, opt for their VIP Barrel Blend Tour. At a bargain price of $35, this tour is well worth the extra investment.

PEJU PROVINCE WINERY open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 8466 Saint helena highway rutherford, cA 94573 (707) 963-3600 | www.peju.com
Peju is simply unforgettable. Its no accident that the winery is called Peju Province, for it presents a world unto itself and tasting experiences unlike anything else in the Valley. Originally founded in 1982 by Tony and Herta Peju on thirty acres in Rutherford, Peju is now the responsibility of the second generation, daughters Lisa and Ariana and has expanded its reach to include the one hundred thirty acre Persephone Ranch in Pope Valley, too. The winery is well known for its highly regarded bottlings of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Zinfandel and several blends, including the proprietary Provence, a red/white cuvee, and Fifty/Fifty, an equal mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2009 bottling of which was just declared one of Twelve Napa Standouts by Wine Spectator with a 91 point rating. There are also several tasting-room-only releases perfect for the summer, including the lovely white Carnival; Peju Pink, with ten percent of its proceeds funding cancer assistance in the Valley; and the brand new Ros of Syrah. Its not just the wines, by any means, which make Peju unforgettable. The winery and its surroundings and the variety of options for experiencing the wines are what truly set Peju apart. Driving down the Sycamore-lined private lane away from Highway 29 leads to first sight of the Tower, the fifty-foot, copper-topped centerpiece which houses the main tasting area, framed on the inside in gorgeous woods and an antique 1906 ten-by-twenty-foot stained glass window and on the outside by stone and copper. Surrounding this are the gardens designed by Tony and personally maintained by Herta herself. A Curly Willow grows next to a koi pond and rocks from the Pope Valley estate dot the area. The circular courtyard in front of the winery contains a magnificent Camphora tree, ushering you into the experiences which await. And those are the true standouts as even a regular tasting at Peju is far and away anything but regular. The Classic Tasting is conducted in a novel presentation style, with groups of tasters spending time with an ambassador who discusses the wine, winemaking and the winery itself. There is also a Private Tasting available several times each morning for those who desire some special alone time or for larger groups. Equally, individualizing the experience is what Peju is all about, so the Premier Peju Experiences give some great options. Peju Fromage is a wine and cheese tasting in the Peju Kitchen, bringing great wines together with local artisan cheeses and crackers. Peju Cpage presents a private tour of the estate, vineyards and gardens in combination with a barrel tasting of reserve wine. Peju Priv is a private, reserve wine tasting of estate grown, limited-release bottlings hosted in the stunning Uluru Room. While all of the Premier Peju Experiences require an advanced appointment, the winery has thought ahead, and each can be booked online through Pejus website or on VinoVisit.com. And thats really what makes Peju special everything has been thoughtfully considered ahead of time, turning even the most common of Napa moments a tasting of wines in a tasting room into a special, memorable, uncommon event. Come on out to Rutherford and experience whats made Peju unique for thirty years. You wont be sorry, and you really wont want to leave. Enjoy!

Lynne A. We were there this past weekend and once again Dennis gave us an amazing tasting. It was the highlight of our trip as always. The new releases are fantastic and we look forward to our wines arriving at our doorstep soon. Thanks again to the Rock Star of Napa Valley (from Bebe :) ) and the gang.
At Frank Family Vineyards, you might want to come for the history of the place, which goes back over a 125 years, back to 1884, when it was Larkmead Winery. Or, you might want to see the beautifully restored, multi-room tasting room set amidst the expansive manicured lawn with its rose bushes, towering old oaks and trimmed hedges, near the barrel cellar and the century-old native sandstone winery building. But, what do people from all over the world really come for? For the outstanding wine poured by some the friendliest people you will find anywhere. The motto at Frank Family has long been Youll never have better wine ... or a better time and that is accurate, though perhaps a bit of an understatement. If you dont leave there with a smile on your face, after having tasted an outstanding roster of wines, then I worry about you. While the winerys setting is exceptional, even more-so are the wines they produce, age and pour. There are legions of loyal wine lovers who will most enthusiastically attest to that. This group may not qualify as a full-blown cult, but they are pretty close and they are international in scope, joined by their love and respect for this winery. So, on second thought, maybe its more a matter of people joined together by a discerning palate and good taste. Having sent scores of people there, and having escorted friends from a dozen countries to this property over the last couple of decades, I have yet to hear anything but praise. One friend from Boston comes to the Napa Valley twice a year for two reasons: to go out to eat and to visit the tasting room at Frank Family. Not necessarily in that order. With so many wines with a Robert M. Parker, Jr. score of 90 or above, it is hard to know where to begin. But if I were to go there today which, now that I think of it, is a pretty good idea I would certainly consider the Reserve Chardonnay and the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Their Chardonnay has always been a favorite wine for virtually everyone, even people who vow that they only drink reds. As a wine to have with food, or simply by itself, it is in a league of its own. Frank Family red wines are the measure of what red wines should be. In addition to the Reserve Cab there is the dense, spicy Zinfandel where the fruit seems to combine dark chocolate and cracked black pepper notes with an essence of raspberry to create a wine that fairly explodes in the mouth. Also available are a Reserve Petite Sirah; the Reserve Pinot Noir; another perpetual favorite, the very food-friendly Rutherford Reserve Sangiovese; and an indescribable Winston Hill Red Wine. Then, add to that, the collection of sparkling wines, a Late Harvest Chardonnay and the often sold out Zinfandel Port. It all combines to make for some of the most sought after, most coveted and most honored wines on the planet. The stewardship of the historic property is now the responsibility of Hollywood icon Richard Frank, recipient of an Emmy for lifetime achievement. As chairman of Walt Disney Television, president of Walt Disney Studios for almost ten years, and president of the Paramount Television Group, he expects perfection at the winery that bears his name and it shows up in every shining facet of this historic property. As legendary tasting room manager Dennis Zablosky, an icon in his own right says, I want visitors memories of the winery to be as much about their experience here as the wines they taste. And so it shall be.

Classic Autos Cruise into Napa Valley for Fathers Day
V Marketplace celebrates the art of the driving machine
The Napa Valley proudly welcomes car connoisseurs from around the Bay Area and beyond as V Marketplace in Yountville hosts the 22nd Annual Fathers Day Invitational Auto Show on Sunday, June 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Auto entries are by invitation. The event is free to the public. From the national champions, to the local favorites, to the one-of-a-kind collector curiosities, more than 150 early and late model autos spanning almost 100 years of production can be seen at this non-competitive, open-class invitational exhibition. Whether nostalgia means rolling down the road in a classic 1928 Model A Phaeton, sliding into the drive-in with a 57 Chevy, or cruising the fast lane in a Porsche Turbo, this show-stopping collection presents some of the finest autos to grace the highway in any era and is the perfect gift for Fathers Day! V Marketplace has also invited local nonprofits to add to the festivities. Starting the morning off is Pink Heals Napa Valley offering coffee and tasty breakfast burritos. Manning the booth where cool beverages can be found will be the Native Sons of the Golden West and the Native Daughters of the Golden West and firing up their grill serving delicious sausages and hot dogs will be the Fire Explorers and the Yountville Fire Department. All proceeds from these sales go directly to the nonprofits. Make it a Fathers Day weekend escape to Napa Valley! Surrounded by lush gardens, beautiful water features and meandering cobblestone walkways, V Marketplace, provides a breath-taking backdrop for this annual event. Visitors can look forward to a unique variety of distinctive specialty shops, galleries, restaurants, wine tasting, hot air ballooning and Michael Chiarellos NapaStyle and Bottega Ristorante. The Yountville Trolley will be offering additional shuttle service free of charge to the California Veterans Home where additional event parking can be found. V Marketplace is located just one hour northeast of San Francisco at 6525 Washington Street in Yountville, Napa Valley. Take Highway 29 to the Yountville/Veterans Home exit, nine miles north of the City of Napa. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. For information, call (707) 944-2451 or go to www.vmarketplace.com.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

Unquestionably the most unique wine tasting destination in the entire Sonoma Valley (and this place will give many in Napa a run for their money) has to be The Castle (as it is known) on Highway 12 in Kenwood that houses Ledson Winery and Vineyards. Originally designed to be the home of its founder, Steve Ledson and his family, Ledson was talked out of that idea by his construction supervisor who suggested making it into a showplace for his wines. The Castle was designed by Ledson with construction starting around 1994. Set among established vineyards as well as some just a few years old, the building was completed and a grand opening held in July of 1999. Guests and locals alike came to marvel at not only the buildings gothic-appearing exterior, but at all of the attention to detail throughout. I think we made the right decision to turn the building into a wine tasting experience, says winemaker and owner Steve Ledson. It ended up taking some 18 months to get all the approvals needed to make it a commercial building, but in the end it was time well spent, and Ive been having a ball in here ever since. The 16,000-square-foot manse houses seven tasting bars and suites, a gourmet marketplace featuring the best foods Sonoma Valley has to offer, picnic grounds, wedding facilities and so much more. For special events, there is a full kitchen, private dining rooms, a full staff, a sommelier and the chef from the Ledson Hotel in Sonoma available to take a special event and make it into an extraordinary event, says Ledson. The tasting room staff is extremely knowledgeable on all of the 80+ wines in the Ledson portfolio, and more often than not, you may even end up talking wine with Steve Ledson, who relishes seeing wine lovers enjoying his wines as well as his hospitality in The Castle. Were not in business just to pour wine, we want you to have the best tasting experience possible, Ledson says, our tasting room staff is an incredible group of professionals with many years of wine and hospitality experience. Many of them have been with me for 10 to 12 years. From day one, our goal has always been to make great wines, present them in the best possible manner, and have our guests truly enjoy their experience when they are here, Ledson says. We want people to experience the grounds; the picnic area, or come for a private tasting overseen by one of our sommeliers or in some cases, even me. No novice to the wine business, Steve Ledsons family has been farming and growing grapes in the Sonoma Valley for more than 150 years. From the mid-1800s to Prohibition, his ancestors were also winemakers. While they stopped making wine after Prohibition, they continued to be a source of grapes for many other wine makers in the Valley. Ledson picked up the winemaking mantle in the 1990s and has carved his name on the barrel that also bears the names of his winegrowing forefathers. Its a family tradition.

Occasio Winery has been receiving tremendous accolades, with the Wine Enthusiast recently declaring, John Kinney is one of Livermore Valleys finest winemakers. With their 2010 Angelica just receiving 92 points, their 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon 90 points, and more 90 point scores on other small lot wines, Occasio Winery is seeing tremendous success from their winemaking philosophy. Owner and winemaker John Kinney tells us that the Angelica rating is the highest rating the Wine Enthusiast has given to an Angelica styled wine, and the highest rating ever given to a dessert wine from Livermore Valley. Occasio Winery is committed to the Heritage varietals of Livermore Valley, with a focus on small and micro lots wines, only from Livermore Valley grapes. Kinney crafts less than 200 cases per varietal, with most less than 100 cases. With a production of around 1500 cases per year, this makes Occasio one

best and make the best. I am always looking to combine the timeless trinity of food, wine and friends. The Bodega (Spanish for cellar) provides a vehicle for these passions and to share them with others. Besides my winery, Knightswood, I provide space in the Bodega for other artisan winemakers. A visit to the comfortably appointed tasting room provides our guests with an unhurried, welcoming experience as well as a range of wines to sample and purchase. On any afternoon, one can expect a warm greeting from our group. Terri is a delightful hostess and multi-lingual expatriate who spent many years living in Madrid, Spain. She provides much of the inspiration behind the designs and events. A dog-friendly place, Bentley the Basset Hound can often be seen resting on a Persian rug requesting your attention, and there is always a winemaker nearby to chat with you or even provide a tour. There are often fun events, featuring food, music and of course wine. Some are exclusive to wine club members so be sure at ask about whats coming. Venture out to Treasure Island, at 13th Street and Avenue I, and discover the gems in Bodegas treasure trove!
