Dear Betrayers of Asia,

Justin Park Asst.Editorial Editor I would like to commence what is soon-to-be the most momentous deliberation in history by saying thank you to those diminishing groups of Asian individuals out there who will remain ever-faithful to their cultural roots. (A round of applause to you my fellow loyal ones. Warm tears of pride trickle down my yellow cheeks.) And to you callous, egocentric, and despicable high school seniors who thought that refusing to check the Asian box on your college applications would provide you with a dishonorable advantagehow dare you? On behalf of the 3.8 billion Asians worldwide, I would like to say that your betrayal to our race shall never be forgiven. Your excuse is that Asians are treated unfairly when it comes to the admission selection. After all, statistics do indicate that it is harder for Asian-Americans to gain admission to the nations top-tier colleges. Well, as a fellow Asian, I do understand that gaining admission into a coveted university is absolutely paramount in our culture, or any other culture for that matter. Getting accepted to an Ivy League university is definitely our one and only goal, and any endeavor deemed effective on increasing your college chances is justified. But abandoning our race on your applications just so you could get into some college that wont appreciate you if you were Asian? That just crosses the line! There are so many more options available for you that will not only quadruple your admission chances, but will also treat you to a delectable rush of adrenaline as well. Here are some suggestions: you can pay someone to take the SAT for you with a fake identification card, or cut a hole in the ceiling to steal the Advanced Placement tests la

But thats not true. We have to understand that we lack the most important aspect of all to become a qualified candidate: rarity! Its the same reason why women love diamonds and children love shiny cards. People love rare stuff, and rarity is not something we can attain by spending thousands of dollars into an SAT Boot Camp or pulling three consecutive all-nighters to get an A on our AP Physics test. Sorry, but smart and qualified Asians will never become rare, not now and not ever. As talk show host Ellen DeGeneres once tweeted, No matter how amazing you are at something, there will always be an eightyear-old Asian who is better. Agreed, Ms. DeGeneres. There are just too many talented Asians in this world. So, I will conclude this letter with a modest proposal for all the scholars out there, and I do hope that you agree with this intellectual suggestion. We need to build an Asian-segregated university. The ultimate Asianonly university where all the exceptionally gifted Asians around the world can apply without the pressure of coming at a disadvantage for being Asian. I would call it URASIAN: University of Remarkably Amazing and Sophisticatedly Intellectual Asian Nerds. Sincerely, A Concerned Asian

priority. However, Troy High School in Fullerton generally ranks above DBHS in terms of academics, even though its Associated Student Body hosts seven dances a year. Even our district rival Walnut High School holds four dances annually, many of which are visited by a number of DBHS students who no longer have neither Winter Formal nor Sadies at their own school. If Winter Formal and Sadies were to be brought back to DBHS, ticket sales would undoubtedly boom. The only class currently attending high school that had the opportunity to go to either of these dances at DBHS was the class of 2012 in its freshman year. The rest of us have had to settle for going to these dances at other schools, ultimately allowing other districts and organizations to reap the benefits from Diamond Bar students ticket sales. The money other schools have made from DBHS students attendances at their dances could have just as easily gone to many on-campus clubs currently suffering from budget cuts. Hopefully in the next year or so, school administrators will come to see that school dances are much more than just a fun way for students to blow off steam. The myth that more dances will bring about worse academic results has been busted, and student activities and DBHS itself can only flourish through hosting these dearly missed events.

Eye of the Editors discusses local issues that are relevant to Diamond Bar High School students. Statements and opinions expressed in the article herein are strictly those of the editors of The Bulls Eye. The view of the editors does not necessarily reflect that of the entire staff.

For several years, the most often heard complaint at Diamond Bar High School has been the conspicuous lack of school dances, especially after the administration cancelled Winter Formal and Sadie Hawkins in 2009. Many students often voice their dissatisfaction by comparing DBHS to other schools and rightfully sothey should have the option of attending these dances at their school. At first, the administration claimed that budgetary issues were the main reasons behind the cancellation of school dances. Later on, the administrations reason became questionable as we began to hear that the clubs and on-campus organizations that held the affected dances profited from ticket sales. Consequently, the school administration promptly fired off another excusestudents danced too inappropriately. However, DBHS already has a wristband cutting policy enforced by Grade Level Coordinators at school dances. If administration does not feel that this is enough, all it has to do is proceed to employ stricter rules regarding dancing. It is unknown to most as to why DBHSs students are in this unfortunate fix. Students speculate that administrators may have cut Winter Formal and Sadies because they potentially distract from our studies, a reasonable excuse since academic performance should be every schools top

The 9th Circuit recently declared that a 43-foot cross at the Mount Soledad veterans memorial was an unconstitutional display of religion and a clear violation of the First Amendment. As a response, on January 24, the U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills that would officially allow the use of religious symbols at military memorials. Is it justified to allow religious symbols to be displayed on shared governmental properties? Or is it a disrespectful move to people of different religions?

Religious Symbols in War Memorials

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor Pro: The placement of religious symbols on war memorials has generated much controversy when the 9th Circuit ruled it unconstitutional. Numerous military memorials on public lands have been affected by the 9th Circuits recent ruling, and many groups have started petitioning for a reversal of the decision. Unfortunately, those dissatisfied groups fail to recognize that the removal of these iconic symbols will be a massive insult to the fallen veterans and their loved ones. It is imperative for the 9th Circuit to rectify this poorly made decision and bring honor to the brave men and women that have lost their lives fighting for our nation. The deceased members of the military should have the right to have their gravestones adorned with religious symbols of any kind. If the government wants to take down a war memorial cross or any type of symbolic structures because it is simply unconstitutional, then every national cemetery should be required to uproot thousands of religion-affiliated monuments like crosses and shrines. The ruling is a completely meaningless and illogical decision that will only result in more trouble for the government and the families of the deceased ones. The War Memorial Protection Act was the result of a recent court ruling that declared the 43-feet cross atop San Diegos Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial an unconstitutional display of religious affiliation. However, the existence of this cross does not take away the ultimate purpose of a war memoriala place where friends and family members can visit and pay respects to Angie Zhang their deceased loved ones. for worship, thus earning it the alternate name Mt. Soledad Easter Cross. Furthermore, the cross was dedicated to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in a dedication bulletin by the grandmother of William J. Kellogg, President of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association. These subjective points only serve to further insult believers of other religions who visit the war memorial to pay their respects to the deceased. Mt. Soledad is government property, and by law, religious symbols cannot be displayed on public land. However, the House has decided that war memorials must be protected because they are an important and indispensable tribute to the courageous soldiers, regardless of whether or not there is a religious structure on it. If a clear line is not drawn between the church and the state now, complete chaos is sure to follow. Other religions will state that it is blatant unfair favoritism of the government and will demand to have their own religious structures stationed on federal property. Although the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prohibits the government from establishing a national religion, the House still stubbornly refuses to see religious symbols as only objects that honor the deceased and does not realize that they are discretely promoting the Christian religion through their biased decision. This irrational and foolish view must be changed immediately, and the House needs to quickly realize that having religious symbols on federal land is an undeniable promotion of religion, or else our country will be the one that will have to suffer for their mistakes.

Forgive me if I sound too pompous, but I definitely consider myself an extremely busy individual who just cant afford to take a trip to the hospital every time I am struck with an unidentiable illness. So when I fell ill one day, I decided to check this site out and become the judge of its validity. My symptoms werent unusual to me. I was nauseated, exhausted, and overwhelmed by a nagging desire to skip school for the day. Before accessing WebMD, I decided to follow my usual protocol; I asked my Mom. Based on the fact that I pulled a strenuous all-nighter the night before, my Mom diagnosed me with a temporary headache caused by sleep deprivation, easily treated with a dose of Advil and a good nap.

Christine Song Business Manager This is the end. Looking back, it took a really long time to get here. I stepped into high school, an Ashley Wilkes in my own right. I spent days and years waiting for the magical moments of high school to nd mebut how could it have found me when I was lost in a mental Disneyland, unwilling to be found? And yet, I expected nothing short of the best, for previously, I had always achieved the best without effort or question. And behind that mask, I danced in a spot of sunlight, with beautiful silver bullets of rain pouring down on me from enchanting stormy grey skies. I am not proud to be able to say that my ending was not as pathetic as that of Mr. Wilkes. I nally realized, almost too late, that what is gone will never come back. I returned from my wanderings down certain halfdeserted streets for indeed, there will not always be time to wonder, Do I dare? Farrells ice cream is the ice cream equivalent of Disneyland with its amazing, bubbly atmosphere. Customers are easily swept up by the upbeat personas of the restaurants waiters and waitresses. There is a constant bout of singing and cheering as the employees help customers celebrate special events. Patrons can also request specially made balloon animals which vary from a giant giraffe hat to a sh on a shing rod. The atmosphere of the parlour is singular in its animated and cheerful vibe. There is never a dull moment in the restaurant as you can easily count on a parade of singing waitresses and waiters to march across the room every few minutes to sing a birthday song to some special birthday boy or girl. The menu includes sandwiches, pizzas, and burgers, but its ice cream is what really steals the spotlight. The sundaes are smooth and include a plethora of toppings such as fruit, chocolate, whipped cream, and more. The sundaes are the perfect serving size to share on a date, while its ice cream oats and sodas are ideal for one person to slurp down all by himself or hereself. Illusions and Allusions, Book VII. Jean-Paul Sartre once said, Lenfer, cest les autres. Coincidentally, the back door of room 250, where I have had journalism since my freshman year, reads, No Exit. (Students go through the front door). I have spent four years roaming certain half-deserted streets with a ball and chain trailing behind me. I have stood on my post for long hours, homogenous amongst my fellow hollow men, and allowed my head to be stuffed with hay. Salome has waited in the shadows of the B building hallway to serve my head on a silver platter with a kiss. I am a veteran of the noble war. Some of these hollow men in this hollow valley have been a comfort, though most have instead proved Sartres existentialist ideals true. One would think I was in Wonderland from the ood that my tears have caused in the prison that I was thrown in without proper trial. My sentence began when I was an eager freshman, dizzy with power from being the oldest in the playground. Then, year after year, six new Valets would laugh at my request for a toothbrush. It was not until Luis Buuel forced my eyes open that I came to understand exactly where I was. Fortunately, this Bastille was not made up entirely of Second Empire furniture. There were remnants of a world outside of its four walls that I collected eagerly. My starved mind feasted on the trickle of light that leaked through the cracks of my cell. Now that my sentence is up, I fear that I may have grown accustomed to the dull normalcy of this life. I know not what to expect when I cast off my chains and walk out a free woman. The world must seem so different when one is no longer looking at it through the distorted glass of a bell jar. Despite my apprehension, when the nal bell tolls, I will put a purple crown upon my head and walk towards my coronation in stride, self-proclaiming myself the empress of a lost generation. I solemnly swear that I will never look back at the wall that my predecessors have built inside their catacombs. One might call it foolish, but I call it self-preservation. This is the way our world ends, our world ends, our world ends. This is the way our world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.

DBHS Soccer Teams Advance to Second Round

Austin Kong A&E Editor On Thursday, February 16, the Diamond Bar High School boys soccer team defeated the Whittier High School Cardinals in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation playoffs at home. After trailing at the start of the second half, the Brahmas managed to score two goals defeating the Cardinals 2-1. In the first half, neither team managed to score. The DBHS defense played superbly, allowing little offensive opportunities for Whittier. On the other hand, the Brahma offense developed numerous plays and created many chances to score but could not put one in the back of the net. I wish we could have finished. We had six shots in the first half. I think nerves played a big part, commented coach Kemp Wells. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick in the beginning of the second half after a Brahma handball in the penalty box. Whittier High School took advantage of the opportunity and advanced 1-0. Five minutes after the penalty, junior Will Lee hit a shot in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal off of an assist from junior, Kase Vollebregt. established his dominance from the beginning as he pinned his first opponent at the first 2:47 mark. He quickly advanced to semifinals and successfully placed second in his weight class. Pike will be competing this Friday at Temecula Valley High School for a chance to enter CIF State. My mentality right now is to make it to State and possibly place in order to accomplish my goal. Ive worked hard for it, so I really want it, said Pike. Junior Nathan Rodriguez came close to placing in the top five, but was defeated 8-2 in a decisive consolation match. Although he was unable to advance to CIF Masters, Rodriguez finished sixth in his 170-pound weight class. Senior co-captain Thomas Ruiz of the 106-pound weight class trounced his senior opponent 14-3 first round, but was unable to advance to quarterfinals after suffering a critical loss to his next opponent. Senior Raymond Sierra, who also is a co-captain of the team, seemed undefeatable at first in his 126-pound class after defeating numerous opponents, but faced an upsetting loss and a minor leg injury on the second day of the tournament. My competitor was strong, and I messed up. I tried my best, but there is no excuse, shared Sierra. This year, DBHS finished third in the Hacienda League and ninth in the CIF Southern Division. Out of the six different schools in the league, however, DBHS had the most number of wrestlers qualify for CIF Individuals. The tournament was highlighted by the younger

half. During the middle of the half, freshman Ashley Bell made a run which caused the Arroyo Grande goalkeeper to deflect the ball out to open space in the penalty box. Freshman Mia Trugerro made the game winning goal after she placed the ball in the net from the deflection. The teams defense also played a solid game and virtually shut down the Eagles offense in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Hunt played an integral part on the defensive end and started this game after junior Leslie Luna injured her wrist towards the end of the league season. Making it to the second round of the CIF playoffs is a momentous step for the DBHS girls soccer program. [We have] talked all year about winning league. We did that. Then we talked about making past the first round [of CIF]. It is a good accomplishment but we are not done yet[We have to] keep playing defense well. If we do that, I think [we will] make a great run, expressed coach Matt Brummett. The team has high hopes for its next game. We have to work hard, focus, play as a team, and grind it out. As long as we play to our best potential, we can win, commented Thomas after the game.

Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor The Diamond Bar High School boys basketball team suffered a disappointing loss in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs on Friday, February 17 against Glendale High School by a score of 56-49. The loss knocks the Brahmas out of the competition after a third place finish in the Hacienda League. The Brahmas began the game sloppily with a myriad of unforced turnovers. This combined with missed routineshots resulted in DBHS trailing after the first half of play. The second half, however, was dominated by the Brahmas due to the key changes made by the coaching staff. It was a good game. We found ourselves down in the first quarter but other than that we played good defense and our offense was flowing, said senior captain Frankie Martinez. In spite of the large deficit, the players came out with intensity and energy at the start of the third quartr as DBHS converted baskets and made stops on the defensive end. However, the Nitros were saved in the midst of the Brahma run by the game clock. We played an exceptional defensive game in the second half, but we could not overcome some early turnovers and missed offensive opportunities, said coach Ty Watkins. The Brahmas played a very good season of basketball. In a tough and competitive league, DBHS was able to finish 1315 overall and 6-6 in league. However, there will be a difficult void to fill due to the graduation of seniors Martinez and Billy Escobar. Despite the defeat, the team remains hopeful for next season. Next year we will be working on getting stronger and faster, and hope to move up in the Hacienda League and get a few rounds in CIF. [We are] very happy how our

team improved throughout the season and since last spring, commented Watkins. On Saturday, Febraury 18 the Diamond Bar High School girls basketball team won its first playoff game in 12 years by beating La Sierra High School 32-26. This advances the Lady Brahmas to the second round of California Interscholastic Federation. The game was aggressive since the opening tip as the La Sierra Eagles sport a very physical and big front court. However, the Lady Brahmas did not back down as both teams played strong defense resulting in the game coming down to the wire. Sophomore Nora Wu hit a three-pointer to give the Brahmas a 27-24 lead late in the ball game. This resulted in a momentum shift as DBHS gained control of the game as it went on to score five more points compared to the three of La Sierra High School. We played an outstanding game it was very physical and we survived it, said coach Tony McCabe. The game was intensified by the stellar defense that both teams played all throughout the game. It was an aggressive game but the team played very well and we were able to pull through with a win, said senior co-captain Jasmine Nguyen. Junior Yewande Alabi also made significant contributions on the defensive end as well as on offense by scoring nine points, getting 9 boards, and blocking an astounding 11 shots. The Lady Brahmas refuse to be content with one victory and hope to continue playing in CIF. For our upcoming game all we have to do is stay focused, have a good practice, and play like its our last time playing basketball, commented Nguyen. The team will play next when they travel to Temecula Valley to play a very strong Golden Bear team in the second round of CIF on Wednesday, February 22.

Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor On Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18, 12 of 14 Diamond Bar High School varsity wrestlers took the mats for the two-day California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Individuals Wrestling Championships held at Brea Olinda High School. Among the 12 wrestlers, senior co-captain Nathan Pike qualified for CIF S.S. Masters Tournament. All wrestlers finished exceptionally well in their respective weight class, but only one was able to secure an entry to CIF Masters. Pike, who wrestles in the 113-pound weight class, displayed strong intensity and prowess throughout the tournament and

DBHS wrestlers, as six juniors and two sophomores represented the school. Junior Matt Carrillo aggressively advanced to the quarterfinals in his 182-pound class, where he was defeated by a pin. 120-pounder sophomore Jeremy Foo also displayed remarkable strength in the beginning, but faced a close defeat in his third consolation face-off. Sophomore Aaron Oh was defeated in his first 160-pound match against a senior wrestler, but immediately regained his momentum by garnering an impressive threewin streak in his consolation matches. I think we did really well. Everything turned out the way we expected. I say we met our expectations, commented head coach Scott Usher.

Athlete of the Month:

Katie Jagodka

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor Excelling in all that she does, senior Katie Jagodka has proven to be one of Diamond Bar High Schools most wellrounded students. As a fouryear member of varsity crosscountry, basketball, and track, Jagodka has shown to be a versatile member of DBHS. Jagodka succeeded in making the basketball team in the sixth grade. It was clear to Jagodka that if she worked hard, she would be able to attain success in the sport. To her, basketball was not just a sport, but rather, a hobby that would bring new friends who shared the same interest. I liked it because it was something I was relatively good at and it was a way for me to meet a whole bunch of new people. I made a lot of meaningful relationships through basketball, elaborated Jagodka. When Jagodka made the

Lady Brahmas varsity basketball team her freshman year, she was understandably intimidated because she was the youngest on the team. As the year progressed, Jagodkas hard work and dedication began to make an impression on the seniors. Due to her experience of participating on varsity for four years, Jagodka acquired the skills necessary to acquire the position of co-captain her senior year. Cross-country and track also play a pivotal role in Jagodkas athletic career. By running distances such as the 800 meter, Jagodka is able to endure long periods of running, an advantage that has benefitted her in basketball. By conditioning her body to have such great stamina, Jagodka is

sure to have the upper hand over her competitors on the court. In addition to grueling practices, J a g o d k a maintains a 3.88 grade point average with Advance Placement classes such as literature in addition to Higher Level mathematics. She is considering majoring in political science/government to help make a positive impact. Jagodka has also decided to continue her athletic success by joining intramural teams. With her experience of being a natural leader both on and off the court, Jagodka has much to contribute. Jagodka has also immersed herself in numerous extra-curricular activities both

in and out of school. She was a teachers assistant at Socal Mental Math and an intern at Acrylatex Coatings, Inc, the summer before her senior year. Furthermore, she is the vice president of Class of 2012, coEditor-in-chief of yearbook, vice president of Hoops 4 Hope, and World Vision. As an active member of both Leo Club and the California Scholarship Federation, Jagodka devotes countless hours in order to give back to the community and those less fortunate. I started off as a freshman knowing that I had to get involved, but I didnt really know how so I tried out a whole bunch of stuff [] I found each one special so I continued doing [them.], said Jagodka. Jagodkas admirable work ethic, perserverence, and dedication will undoubtedly bring her far in all her future endeavors. Dont let others bring you down, always strive to get better and give it your all, advised Jagodka
